PREPARING YOUR

HOME
 TWO MONTHS TO FIVE MONTHS

Preparing your Home
2to 5 Months

Two Months to Five Months

From two months to five months your baby development truly awakens.   Movement commences
for your baby. You’ll see this first in baby’s ability to support his head. Soon movement progresses
to rolling over and sitting with support. Baby’s hand activity progresses from the grasping reflex,
to holding a toy and passing it from one hand to the other. During this time you’ll be enchanted
by baby’s first smile, melodious, soft cooing followed by baby’s repetitious squealing and
babbling. There is much to prepare for in support of this time of awakening development.

Preparation of your home in

readiness for your baby’s
awakening development means
you are able to support this
tremendous time of change and
growth.    The following areas of
your home are prepared to
ensure you’re able to continue
meeting the needs of your baby
and accommodate your needs
too.

This space is peaceful and calm. It offers beauty, natural light and visual stimulation and supports your
baby’s need to establish and maintain his points of reference, his familiar memories and experiences in
his after birth world. It offers support to establishing your new relationship with your baby. This is a space
where you can lovingly and sensitively hold, handle and feed, if you prefer to feed in private, your baby.
In the space four main areas are prepared:

1. AN AREA FOR SLEEPING

A special bed for your baby. As a newborn this maybe a
Cestina or a broad cradle: a basket style of bed that offers
an elliptical shape similar to that of the uterus but wide
enough for unhindered movement and a firm mattress
positioned high enough in a basket to ensure your baby’s
vision is not obstructed. Your baby will out grow the
Cestina at about 10 -12 weeks. From about 10 – 12 weeks
transition baby to a  low bed positioned against a wall in
baby’s space.

2. AN AREA FOR FEEDING

- 1. Until breastfeeding is truly established you may find it
beneficial to feed in this quiet, protected space. The area
for feeding includes:

A feeding/comfort pillow or Topponcino, used when
feeding and holding baby.
A comfortable feeding chair with foot rest
A side table with an added photo frame of you or
your family and your baby.
Also add a small vase of fresh flowers for an element
of beauty.
Support items, stored within the side table, for
breastfeeding: breast pads, soft fabric cloths for care
of your baby during and after breastfeeding.
If you used a receiving cloth of a natural fibre from
birth, you might now use that cloth as a beautiful,
light cover rug for baby.

3. AN AREA FOR PHYSICAL CARE

A change table and change mat.

Storage facilities for: accessories for changing your baby,
containers for laundry (soiled and clothes), and for storage of
your baby’s clothing.
A potty is now included. It is added at about four to five
months in preparation for the commencement of learning to
toilet. It’s your decision where in your home you place your
child’s potty. If your home is large, for convenience, you may
need more than one potty
An Area for Bathing and Accessories which includes: A baby
bath and stand, towels, preferred baby products.

 4. AN AREA FOR MOVEMENT

A movement mat with mirror and cushions.

A low shelf for placement of your baby’s toys for visual,
tactile and auditory sensorial exploration.
A mobile hanger and mobiles positioned over the
movement mat. Baby’s mobiles now provide support for
a great deal of progressive and exciting interaction to
further support hand eye coordination, grasping and
visual focusing and tracking

As baby develops his capacities of his hands and body and as his language also continues to develop
your baby simultaneously develops in natural pathways of independence that are supported by his
experiences, growth and development.

Soon your baby will be sitting with support and showing interest in the solid foods eaten by you and
his family group. These are a few of the indicators that you can add a weaning table and chair for baby
with an adult stool for you to your home. The accessories to weaning are an important addition to
enable the process of weaning to proceed with ease for you and your baby.

The preparation of the home wholly supports the awakening of your baby’s development through
sensorial exploration, baby’s hand capacity and movement, the development of language, and support
of baby’s steady gains of independence.
