INTRODUCTION

A good structure comes within a good design. “Gustave” was designed to resemblance the Eiffel
tower, aiming to showcase its architectural style. Eiffel tower was indeed a good representation
of a good structure as well as its design.

Through the process of its building stepping stone you can see the intricate details as it weaves
on its material. Using wielded aluminum frame and synthetic flat rattan you can anticipate a
good outcome up to present. Indeed, it is a good structure with its inevitable design.

EIFFEL TOWER, PARIS

The Eiffel Tower is unquestionably modern in its shape, which is distinct from the Neo-Gothic,
Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque styles that were popular in the 18th and 19th centuries,
according to Gudek Snajdar. But its material truly made it stand out.

Gustave Eiffel used latticed wrought iron to construct the tower to demonstrate that the metal
could be as strong as stone while being lighter. The wrought-iron structure is composed of four
immense arched legs, set on masonry piers that curve inward until joining in a single, tapered
tower.

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED
As early as the project was announced, the group brainstormed for ideas that could potentially
be the face of the final output. A lot of concepts were inspired and drafted from famous buildings
like The Fallingwater, Gherkin’s Tower, Temple of Isis at Philae, and the like. Unfortunately, it
was hard to come up with a furniture that exemplifies intricacy and details. Most designs that
the group came up with were either too dull or too complicated to be made in a span of two
weeks. Also, there were some plates to be made and deadlines to be met around the time span.
These factors affected the conceptualization period. Thankfully, these situations were
conquered and the members decided to settle for a renowned classic, a building that will stand
the test of time– the Eiffel Tower.

The design for the furniture was approved on May 17, Friday. The deadline was upon us. The
group decided to split up and search for furniture shops that could finish the chair in a span of
seven days. Luckily, a shop that specializes in patio furniture accepted the project. The members
were worried it would not be finished in less than a week, but the craftsman completed it in two
days. The group had a rough start but everything came together in the end.
CONCEPT AND DESIGN PROCESS
The task given to the whole class was to design a furniture exhibiting the concept of architecture.
From choosing what building should be used to the type of furniture that will be furnished, the
group spent almost two weeks to come up with the final concept of their furniture.

The group recreated some architectural structures such as The Fallingwater, 30 St Mary Axe
more known as Gherkin’s Tower, Eiffel Tower, etc. as a furniture. In total, four design ideas of
four different buildings were proposed by the students. To narrow down the list, the students
considered the time frame, materials that will be used and complexity of the design of the
furniture.

The first idea that the group came up to was the Gherkin’s Tower. The design of furniture they
made is a set of 4 chairs and a coffee table that can be assembled into the structure’s shape. It
can truly benefit the consumers as it is space saving and its aesthetic design is evident to the eye
of the viewers. The problem encountered was that the furniture’s design is too complex to be
made in just a short span of time.

Because of the conflict from the latter design, the group decided to change the structure to
Fallingwater. The furniture that will best showcase the structure was a minimalist cabinet. The
group decided to make it simple as the characteristic of Fallingwater is not ambiguous. But the
conflict faced on the design was that it was too meek and developing the design would take too
much time considering that a week had already passed.

The alternative design derived next was the 4-seater dining set that has a simple design but due
to time insufficiency, no furniture shop could make it in less than a week.
In the end, the group decided to use the structure of the Eiffel Tower as the inspiration of the
furniture because of the intricate details it exemplifies. The high back armless chair was chosen
as the furniture type for it will best flaunt the details of the said tower.

MATERIALS USED
As for the materials used, features of Eiffel Tower have been incorporated to the high back
armless chair. Aluminum frame was used as the foundation of the chair while synthetic flat
rattan was used as the main material that compose the chair which exhibits the metal that was
used in the iron tower. Rendered with neutral color the chair radiates a more realistic outcome.
