Chapter I

Problem and It’s Settings

This chapters covers the background of the study, the statement of the problem,

significance of the study and the scope and delimitation

Background of the Study

Agriculture is the most important sector of society because we all know that in this

sector, we get our basic needs specifically, food. Farmers are the common people that usually

plant grains for us to have rice of course. But before they were able to make it, they need to

do so many things and one of these is irrigation. Irrigation is the supply of water to land or

crops to help growth, typically by means of channels. Farmers needs an irrigation system for

the plants to grow that is why it is important. But there are so many problems that farmers

encounter in irrigation like answering the questions “When do I water?” and “How long I do

water?”

The farmers need an efficient device or equipment that will help them to water their

crops because water is one of the most needed factor that affects the growth of the plants or

crops that they are growing. Because of this, irrigation was conceptualized for the farmers.
RoboIrrigation: Solar Powered Water Irrigation

A robot is a machine- especially one programmable by a computer- capable of carrying

out of complex series of actions automatically. Robots can be guided by an external control

device or the control may be embedded within. Robots may be constructed to take on human

form but most robots are machines designed to perform a task with no regard to how they

look.

Water pump system are also use in irrigation system in field. And it is very helpful to

the farmers to maker their job easier in terms of supplying water to the crops.

In this study, the researchers thought of a more convenient and easier way of irrigating

the field by using robots. The researchers came up with the study of creating a solar powered

water pump robot.

Introduction

Irrigation is an extremely hard thing to make for your lawn or on a field. A lot of time is

needed to make a fully – functional irrigation. The researchers decided to come up with a

project that would make this irrigation a portable one. This robot would go around the lawn or

a field and would water the crops it would pass by. It has a rechargeable battery and a solar

panel as a source of power on roaming around the lawn or a field, making it more efficient

during a sunny day. This robot would be programmed based on how far would it travel on the

field. And also, this robot is waterproof and is designed for having a better mobility on muddy

surface.

The farmers need an efficient device or equipment that will help them to water their

crops because water is one of the most needed factors that affect the growth of the crops

that they are growing. Because of this, the concept of irrigation was conceptualized for the

farmers. Irrigation is the artificial application of water for agricultural purposes.

Irrigation is needed on a farm because it is an extremely hard task for a farmer to water

their crops one – by – one and it will consume a very large amount of energy, and also, it will

consume an extremely large amount of time.

Statement of the Problem

This study will be conducted to determine the level of effectiveness and acceptability

of the plant irrigation water pump robot.

RoboIrrigation: Solar Powered Water Irrigation

This study intended to answer the following questions:

1.Is there any significance difference between the level of acceptability of the plant

irrigation water pump robot and the existing irrigation system sprinkler in terms of:

1.1. Price

1.2. Range of water.

2. Is there any significance difference between the level of effectiveness of the plant

irrigation water pump robot and the existing irrigation system sprinkler in terms of:

2.1. Range of the water

2.2. The amount of water released

2.3. Speed of releasing the water from the sprinkler robot

Significance of the Study

Water irrigation system are very important in field to growth the crops of the farmers.
Manual operation is required for them to be able to perform their work. And of course, it is
really exhausting. Therefore, the researchers thought of a more convenient and easier way
of irrigating the field by using robots.

To the farmers

It will be easier and more convenient for the farmers to irrigate the field. They will have
a less work and they don’t need to monitor the irrigation anymore. They can just leave it to
the robot.

To the Researchers

Conducting this study added knowledge to the searchers for future researchers. The
conduct of this will serve as guidance for the next generation researchers.

Scope and Delimitation

The study will focus on the development of the water pump robot system and
determining the level of acceptability and effectiveness of it. The purpose of this study is to
make the job of the farmers easier in irrigating the field.

The robot in the study is the one who has also pump. So, the robot will go around the
field to irrigate the crops. The locale of the study will be at E. Santos St, Concepcion Uno,
Marikina City. This study will be conducted with the duration of 1 month.

Definition of Terms

Arduino UNO

The Arduino Uno is a microcontroller board based on the ATmega328. It has 14 digital
input/output pins (of which six can be used as PWM outputs), six analog inputs, a 16 MHz
crystal oscillator, a USB connection, a power jack, an ICSP header, and a reset button. It
contains everything needed to support the microcontroller; simply connect it to a computer
with a USB cable or power it with an AC-to-DC adapter or battery to get started

DC Motor

DC Gear motor, is also called DC Geared Motor, Geared Dc Motor and gearhead motor or
gearbox motor. It consists of a, electric DC motor and a gearbox or gearhead; these
gearheads are used to reduce the DC motor speed, while increase the DC motor torque.
Therefore, user can get lower speed and higher torque from gear motor.

Acrylic Chassis Plate

It has two gear motors with 65mm wheels and a rear caster. The chassis plates are made
from acrylic with a wide variety of mounting holes for microcontrollers, sensors, batteries,
etc. Simply screw the two pre-cut platforms together, attach the motors and caster and add
your robotics controller and sensors. This kit includes all of the parts needed to assemble
the chassis as well as a 4xAA battery holder with barrel jack termination. Batteries are not
included.

Solar Panel

Solar panels are devices that convert light into electricity. They are called "solar" panels
because most of the time, the most powerful source of light available is the Sun, called Sol
by astronomers. Some scientists call them photovoltaics which means, basically, "light-
electricity."

A solar panel is a collection of solar cells. Lots of small solar cells spread over a large area
can work together to provide enough power to be useful. The more light that hits a cell, the
more electricity it produces, so spacecraft are usually designed with solar panels that can
always be pointed at the Sun even as the rest of the body of the spacecraft moves around,
much as a tank turret can be aimed independently of where the tank is going.

Rechargeable Battery

Rechargeable batteries (also known as secondary cells) are batteries that potentially consist
of reversible cell reactions that allow them to recharge, or regain their cell potential, through
the work done by passing currents of electricity. As opposed to primary cells (not reversible),
rechargeable batteries can charge and discharge numerous times.

Water Pump
A water pump is a mechanical device that is designed to circulate coolant through water-
cooled engines. Although not all water-cooled engines use water pumps, these components
are at the heart of nearly all modern water-cooling systems. Water pumps are typically
driven via the rotation of the crankshaft, although that can be accomplished in a variety of
different ways. There are also a number of different styles of pumps that are commonly
used.

Hypothesis

The researchers will be able to design a robot that can irrigate the crops on the field. This

robot will be able to irrigate crops at field and help farmers to save much more time. It will

also be able to perform autonomously, and especially farmers will benefit with this robot

Methodology

The body of the robot consists of an arduino uno microcontroller board, a motor shield,

a mini servo motor, 2 dc motors ,4 wheels (2 large wheels and 2 small wheels), an acrylic

chassis plate, a switch, A solar panel, rechargeable battery, jumper wires, water pump, a

hose/tube. For the hard ware, glue gun, soldering iron Phillips Head screwdriver, and flathead

screwdriver is needed

In making the robot's body, the 2 dc motors are attached at the hind part of the acrylic

chassis and the 2 large wheels are attached to the motors. The 2 small wheels are attached

at the front part. The arduino uno microcontroller board, the motor shield, the rechargeable

battery are located inside the robot, they are connected to each other because of the wires.
RoboIrrigation: Solar Powered Water Irrigation

At the top part of robot, the solar panel is located. The water pump is located at the back part

of the robot and the hose is connected to it for the water is able to be pumped.
