CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

TITLE NIYO TO TITLE NIYO TO

This chapter presents the background of the study, conceptual framework,

statement of the problem, hypothesis, scope and limitation, significance of the study, and

the definition of terms used in the study.

Background of Problem

In present days, the internet has turned around our reality. It affected the way how

people communicate. It also helped everyone because of its innovation like ordering a

pizza, buying a new television, sharing a moment with a friend, and sending pictures

through message online. Before the internet, being updated with the news was a pain in the

neck. Person would travel miles to view the bulletin where the news was posted.

Nowadays, news can be seen anywhere in the internet. It is really easy for anyone to access

the internet as they only need a computer or any devices with an internet connection. That

is why most schools are using internet in teaching students and communicating with the

parents or guardian of the students.

iView: Online Card Viewer is a website that parents, guardians and professors

could access through the internet. The existence of the World Wide Web is made possible

by computers and programs that communicate information to one another.

School teachers issued the report cards online as a tool to inform parents and

guardians about student’s academic performance. The process is time-consuming, and it

iView: Online Students’ Progress Report Card Viewer 8

disables individuals to have certain difficulty in time management. iView: Online Card

Viewer helps distribute report card to the parents and guardians of the student on its

website, through the internet. The use of internet is dedicated only for educational
TITLE NIYO TO TITLE NIYO TO
purposes.

Before the iView, parents and guardians take time to get their child, the students’,

report cards in school. That is why researchers made a new and easy way in distributing

students’ report card to the student’s parent or guardian. iView: Online Card Viewer

website will help parents and guardians to effortlessly view the student’s report card online;

this applies to parents and guardians who are unable to go to school to see the report card

of their child.

This research tries to determine if the iView Online Card viewer will have a

significant outcome for teachers, students’ parents and guardians. All of them are having

trouble in terms of report card viewing because of other responsibilities that must be done

at home and work. The study focuses on the efficiency using the online viewing system

which considers all individuals involve in grading the student’s performance. The use of

the system only covers the viewing of report cards through its corresponding website.

Theoretical Framework of the Study

This study is mainly based on the Cognitive Apprenticeship Theory. Proposed by

Collins et al. (2010), Cognitive Apprenticeship is a theory that attempts to bring tacit

processes out in the open. It assumes that people learn from one another, through

observation, imitation and modeling. Around 1987, Collins, Browns and Newman (2011)
iView: Online Students’ Progress Report Card Viewer 9

developed six teaching methods: – modeling, coaching, scaffolding, articulation, reflection

and exploration. These methods enable students to cognitive and metacognitive strategies

for “using, managing, and discovering knowledge.”

Theoretical Framework of the System

Since the study focuses on the efficiency of iView to students, and teachers, Online

System Theory observes the users who are included the low of the program (Ella, 2012).

Hence, the researchers of the study will inspect the data, and the gathered information

including the data in the program to ensure that the data in thee online system runs

smoothly.

Online System Theory

The Internet is the most convenient and efficient commodity for

organizations and businesses alike. Websites function as a portal for members,

customers and others to communicate. It provide services and support 24-hours a

day. It is cost effective for promotion, marketing and information dissemination

(Ella,2012).

Database Theory

Database Theory encapsulates a wide range of topics related to Database

and Database Management System. A database organizes a collection of data. It is

the comprised of schemes, tables, queries, reports, views and other objects, (Aleta

et al., 2018).
iView: Online Students’ Progress Report Card Viewer 10

User Interface Design

The user interface (UI) is everything designed into an information device

TITLE NIYO TO TITLE NIYO TO
with which a person may interact. This can include display screens, keyboards, a

mouse and the appearance of a desktop. It is also the way through which a user

interacts with an application or a website. The growing dependence of many

companies on web applications and mobile applications has led many companies

to place increased priority on UI in an effort to improve the user's overall experience

(Rouse, 2019).

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

TITLE NIYO TO TITLE NIYO TO

This chapter will presents the view of the related literature and studies from foreign

and local authors, which will have relevance in towards this study.

Foreign Studies

Assessment and grading have become a major focus in education reform. But one

basic component of most present-day grading systems stands as a major impediment to

making grades fairer, more accurate, and more meaningful. That component is percentage

grades. Percentage grades are the foundation of many state grading policies. Nearly every

online grading program available to educators calculates percentage grades. Yet despite

their popularity, percentage grades are difficult to defend from a procedural, practical, or

ethical perspective, (Guskey, 2013).

The logistical problems associated with distributing, collecting, grading, and

returning assignments and the difficulties in ensuring fairness and consistency in grading

tend to increase non-linearly with the number of students enrolled in a class. This is

especially true in project-based design courses where evaluation is subjective, deliverables

are team-based, and the philosophies and expectations of course faculty members may vary

substantially, (Ahn & Thompson, 2012).

Teachers have been searching for ways to create a positive parent-teacher

relationship. A positive and constructive parent-teacher relationship is helpful to the

student. If grades are made available to parents on a daily basis, they will have access to
iView: Online Students’ Progress Report Card Viewer 18

specifics about the academic performance of their child. Parents and teachers will be able

to communicate with each other constantly. This study examined the effects of the

communication aspect of using an online grading program. This study explored teachers’
TITLE NIYO TO TITLE NIYO TO
perceptions of the implications of allowing the grading process to become transparent to

parents, (Mize, 2011).

Overall, the students agree that assessment is a necessary part of education, but

have differing opinions on how the grading should be done. Some students find the current

and most common system of numbered grades to be an effective way of measuring their

skills and knowledge, while others would prefer a system of students who pass and fail.

The few students who do not seem to care about their grades, or have negative opinions

about them, have problems with the entire education system, not just the evaluation part of

it. When it comes to the principles of assessment, fairness is a term that is used many times,

as is a mutual agreement between the teacher and the students about the requirements of

the course, (Pyhäjärvi, 2016).

Most researchers in this field agree on the notion that some aspects of complex

achievement are difficult to measure using objective-type questions. Learning outcomes

implying the ability to recall, organize and integrate ideas, the ability to express oneself in

writing and the ability to supply merely than identify interpretation and application of data,

require less structuring of response than that imposed by objective test items. Furthermore

using computers to increase our understanding of the textual features and cognitive skills

involved in the creation and in the comprehension of written texts, provide a number of

benefits to the educational community, (Dr. Fatima & Ghosh, 2010).

Local Studies

The initiation of Information Technology has changed people’s outlook on life.

TITLEDue to the

NIYO TO advancement, innovative and better computer trends haves
surfaced, thus, allowing things to be done with less time and effort needed. Thus,

computers become vital in business, in industries, and in schools specifically, where they

can provide students and faculty with more reason to test their skills and capabilities

(Combs, 2005). Most systems and programs can serve as their partner in doing their tasks

including homework, research, and projects. Also, the system or program serves as their

friend during free time because of the vast number of computer games available online

(Balmes, 2016).

With the widespread employment of distance learning education program, even

most conventional colleges and universities are now offering online education. Along with

this program, certificate, associates and different educational degree can be acquired

through distance learning education. Various universities and institutions around the world

use automated advising systems. They are helpful and beneficial for both advisors and

advisees in that they contribute to assisting in making better-informed decisions and

improved services, (Cantos, Labago, & Tanguilig, 2015).

With the advancement of technology, number of schools taking advantage on the

use of grading systems in both offline and online platform are increasing. Grading system

plays a key role in the management of any school. But, those systems do not meet the

actual expectations and performance as how it must be. From the faculty perspectives, these

are necessary to avoid disagreement on the side of both teachers and students. A

computerized grading system is a highly desirable educational tool kit in aid to lessen the
iView: Online Students’ Progress Report Card Viewer 20

effort of teachers and \avoid several form of errors in the process, (Arevalo, Abundo,

Barreno, & Laput, 2012).

An Online Encoding and Inquiry System via SMS Technology of San Mateo
TITLE NIYO TO TITLE NIYO TO
Municipal College through Short Messaging Service provides efficient and accurate grade

reports. On the other hand, it intends to perform the following operations; study and

develop the manual operation by the office of the registrar; find out what are the

circumstances causes the delay of releasing of grades; minimize the time consumed in

searching for the grades of the students in the filling and retrieval of data. To ease these

difficulties in knowing the grades, a system using SMS or Short Message Service will be

used. Since mobile phone seems to be a positive feature which most individuals’ possess,

and take almost in all places with them, it is, therefore, an extremely effective means of

transporting information to them quicker and easier, (San Mateo Municipal College, 2016).

The most grading system can do is to approximate the year level of student

achievement regarding the course objectives (Bisquit, 2009). One of the marks of a good

school and teaching is a well thought of extermination and grading system. In a credential-

oriented society like ours, students’ futures and careers are largely dependent on grades

and it is incumbent on the school and teachers to expand all efforts to develop and maintain

an evaluation system that is efficient, just and humane. In analyzing grades of students, the

ultimate purpose is to promote educational development of the student. It serves as basis

for promotion or retention, not demotion or as a means of discouraging students to continue

schooling. School heads use grading analysis as a major criterion for determining academic

honors, notably in choosing honor students or in awarding scholarships to deserving

students.
iView: Online Students’ Progress Report Card Viewer 21

Marrero (2009) in his investigation entitled "Understudy Information System for

the College of the Cordilleras" focused on that the idea of Information Systems (IS)

developed in the mid- 1960s. All the more regularly, when data framework is characterized,
TITLE NIYO TO TITLE NIYO TO
the field Information Science is constantly related is a scholarly field that arrangements

with the age, gathering, association, stockpiling, recovery, and dispersal of recorded

learning. Moreover, it is an accumulation of related segments intended to help tasks,

administration, and basic leadership in an association. For the most part, IS should advise

individuals. Data System underpins individuals or clients in settling on clever choices in

view of the data got from solid information.

Foreign Literature

Almost no one believes that conventional approaches to grading are beneficial

(Danielson, 2009). There is no consensus as to what grades mean; some teachers appear to

believe that their grade distributions reflect their own teaching abilities or the complexity

of the content more than they do student achievement; others maintain that their harsh

grading policy reflects their own high standards. Educators are well advised to re-examine

the accepted ways of doing things at their schools in accordance with to their specific

policy. Educators must appreciate the relationship between instruction and student conduct.

When students are engaged in meaningful work and experience learning success, they are

not much inclined to disrupt a class.

In order to determine students’ grades or marks, teachers use their professional

judgment and consider factors such as consistency, recent improvement and amount of
iView: Online Students’ Progress Report Card Viewer 22

evidence. Teachers and students work together to gather evidence of their learning over

time from observations, conversations, and student products. Teachers then look at the

most recent and most consistent level of achievement or performance as measured against
TITLE NIYO TO TITLE NIYO TO
the curriculum expectations and the achievement chart. In reporting, students’ achievement

in learning skills and work habits are separated from student achievement in curricular

subjects (unless specifically allowed by the curriculum). Report card comments that

accompany students’ grades identify specific student strengths, including classroom

examples/evidence, and offer specific next steps for improvement, (Holy Name of Mary,

2018).

Report cards are evaluation tools that can provide comprehensive feedback on

performance and facilitate comparison of performance across related topics (Spitzer,

2015). Report cards can be created for any topic in all fields of interest, and can range in

scale from an assessment of an individual’s performance on one task to an international

evaluation spanning multiple decades. Regardless of the subject matter, these analyses are

often designed for simplified communication with more general audiences and can be used

as a foundation for corrective action and community mobilization for reform.

A growing wave of schools gives parents feedback on their children’s character

skills and nonacademic traits through report cards and progress updates. In a progress

report, students are often expected to commit to an exact schedule for the project

completion, discuss the status of the materials being used and account for the money spent,

and summarize concretely both the current findings and the predicted results. The

professionalism of the progress report is often vital to the future of the project. The rules
iView: Online Students’ Progress Report Card Viewer 23

for writing progress reports are a lot more flexible in a classroom or lab than they are on

the job, with a lot less at stake, (Dutton, 2014).

Grades actually reflect student understanding of the curriculum, then large numbers
TITLE NIYO TO TITLE NIYO TO
of high grades should be applauded rather than criticized, as this means simply that many

students are mastering important concepts. Complaints about grade inflation make sense

only in the context of general confusion about the fundamental meaning of grades. If more

students are earning higher grades, and if high grades represent high levels of achievement,

then everyone should be cheering. On the other hand, if more and more students are getting

A's but nobody knows what the grades actually mean, then the concerned voices have an

important message, (Danielson, 2009).

Local Literature

As every teacher knows, report card comments are a critical part to each student's

evaluation and assessment—and now one knows your students better than you (Sandbox

Networks, 2018). Report card comments help parents to understand where their child is

growing or struggling as a student. Are there things that their child excels at or struggles

with? The valuable information you provide can help the parent address any challenges

their child may be struggling with in the classroom. They can also be used to praise a child's

accomplishments and hard work, giving that student the encouragement they deserve.

Data from teachers and school principals show that school evaluations can affect

the nature and form of teacher appraisal and feedback which can, in turn, affect what

teachers do in the classroom. An opportunity, therefore, exists for policy makers and
iView: Online Students’ Progress Report Card Viewer 24

administrators to shape the framework of evaluation to raise performance and to target

specific areas of school education. In particular, TALIS data indicate that opportunities

exist to better address teachers’ needs for improving their teaching in the areas of teaching
TITLE NIYO TO TITLE NIYO TO
students with special learning needs and teaching in a multicultural setting, (OECD, 2009).

The use of technology has been at the forefront of Philippine education for decades,

(Pitagan, 2017). It is integrated as theory and practice in the analysis, design, development,

implementation, and evaluation of processes and resources for learning, teaching and

training. The most commonly used form of which is blended learning defined as learning

systems combining face-to-face instruction with computer- mediated instruction with the

end result of improved student learning through the use of learning management system

(LMS) across contents in all academic levels.

Teachers’ perceptions of the appraisal and feedback they receive are likely to be

shaped by the degree to which they consider it a fair and just assessment of their work. It

may be assumed that teachers who do not consider their appraisal and feedback a fair

assessment of their work would also have a negative view of other aspects of its impact

and role within their school. Impressions of fairness are also linked to indicators of the

extent to which the outcomes and incentives of an appraisal and feedback system are

properly aligned with teachers’ work, what they consider to be important in their teaching,

and the school’s organizational objectives. For example, if teachers are appraised and

receive feedback on a particularly narrow set of criteria or on a particular outcome measure

which they feel does not fully or fairly reflect their work, a measure of the fairness of the

system should highlight this problem, (OECD, 2009).

iView: Online Students’ Progress Report Card Viewer 25

In recent years, the challenges of daily life and work have undergone a

transformation brought about by rapid advances in technology and globalization. The

Department of Education (DepEd), Philippines, has integrated this approach into its K to12
TITLE NIYO TO TITLE NIYO TO
education reform agenda. Many employers and educators have noted that a new set of skills

is required to succeed in this world of new challenges. Solutions that rely on fixed

knowledge and linear thinking are being replaced by new solutions that require greater

collaboration, flexibility, and innovation in order to assimilate a range of changing

perspectives and new technologies, (Assessment Curriculum & Technology Research

Centre (University of the Philippines Diliman, 2018).

Synthesis

The literatures and studies from different authors written above proves that online

student progress report card viewers are beneficial to the community’s progress. Danielson

(2009), Dutton (2014), & Spitzer (2015) points out that students’ report card are beneficial

in the observation of teachers to students. This report cards reflects on how does a student

perform in the school in different terms. Technology has been a large contributor in the

progress of education in the world, it was according to the indication of Marrero (2009)and

Pitagan (2017). E-Learning, Grading System, and school advertisement has been

fundamentally used by the schools within the past decades. Based on the study of Arevalo

et.al (2012), Balmes (2016), Danielson(2009), it is indicated that a computerized viewing

system provides clarity and convenience to all sides of citizens of the community in the

field of education. It is justified in the indicated literatures and studies Technology has been

truly beneficial to the communities on the past decades.

Research Design

This researchers used a descriptive type of research which is considered the most

effective method for testing effect. This type of research is more of an analytic or statistical

type of research wherein the data descriptions must be factual, accurate and justifiable (Dy,

Larida, & Dr.Tanguilig, 2013). In order to identify and define the existing business process

by which the system was based upon, the researcher conducted interviews through survey

questionnaire for the data analysis. Data gathered are used as reference for creating the

summary of findings for the study.

Population of the Study

The participants of this research were students and teachers of the SHS students of

STI College Calamba. This has been done to have a much better awareness into the research
