b. Through (2, −3); perpendicular to the line 𝑥 + 3𝑦 + 2 = 0 Plot on the same plane.

This is called the two-intercept form of the equation of a line.
2.2 Solve
a. Un small business buys a computer for $2’800.000. After 5 years the value of the computer is
expected to be $400.000. For accounting purposes the business uses linear depreciation to assess the
value of the computer at a given time. This means that if 𝑉 is the value of the computer at time 𝑡,
then a linear equation is used to relate 𝑉 and 𝑡.
a.1 Find a linear equation that relates 𝑉 and 𝑡.
a.2 Sketch a graph of this linear equation.
a.3 What do the slope and 𝑉-intercept of the graph represent?
a.4 Find the depreciated value of the computer 3 years from the date of purchase.
b. Some scientists believe that the average surface temperature of the world has been rising steadily.
The average surface temperature can be modeled by
𝑇 = 0.02𝑡 + 12
where 𝑇 is temperature in °𝐶 and 𝑡 is years since 1990.
b.1 What do the slope and 𝑇-intercept represent?
b.2 Use the equation to predict the average global Surface temperature in 2050.
c. The manager of a furniture Factory finds that it costs $3.200 to manufacture 100 chairs in one day
and $5.400 to produce 300 chairs in one day.
c.1 Assuming that the relationship between cost and the number of chairs produced is linear, find an
equation that expresses this relationship. Then graph the equation.
c.2 What is the slope of the line in part (a), and what does it represent?
c.3 What is the y-intercept of this line, and what does it represent?
d. The monthly cost of driving a car depends on the number of miles driven. Lynn found that in May
her driving cost was $380 for 480 mi and in June her cost was $460 for 800 mi. Assume that there
is a linear relationship between the monthly cost C of driving a car and the distance driven
d.1. Find a linear equation that relates C and d.
d.2. Use part (a) to predict the cost of driving 1600 mi per month.
d.3. Draw the graph of the linear equation. What does the slope of the line represent?
d.4. What does the y-intercept of the graph represent?

3. SYSTEMS OF EQUATIONS
3.1 Find all solutions of the system of equations and solve by the graphical method
3𝑥 + 1 = 𝑦 − 8
a. {
4𝑦 + 3 = 7 − 4𝑥
5𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 1
b. {
3𝑥 − 4𝑦 = 7
5𝑥 + 3 = 2 − 3𝑦
c. {

is flying into a head wind, the trip takes him 2 hours. On the way back, the wind is still blowing at
the same speed, so the return trip takes only 1 h 20 min. What is his speed in still air, and how fast is
the wind blowing?

each kind went into the mixture?
c. A woman invests a total of $20.000.000 in two accounts, one paying 5% and the other paying 6%
