Smart Margin
User Guide

Introduction
Smart Margin is a desktop application that can assesses the scan quality
and generate margins for for 3Shape, Itero and other scanner output.
When configured, the application will automatically detect new scans and
send them to Pearl’s cloud for scan quality assessment and margin
marking.

Installation
Download the SmartMarginDesktop installer and double click to install
and run the application. In the future, you can run the application by
searching “Smart Margin” in the Start Menu (Windows) or Spotlight
(Mac) and clicking the app.
Login
When Smart Margin is launched for the first time, it will prompt for user
credentials. Use the credentials provided by Pearl to complete the login
form and click “LOG IN”.
Note: The login form will accept either email or username

Initial Setup
After login, you will need to configure at least one input folder and one
bucket for Scan Quality and/or Margin Marking to begin.

1. Click the “Plus (+)” button in the bottom right corner to create a new
bucket.
2. Click the “Plus (+)” button in the bottom right corner to create a new
bucket.

Tip: Once you’ve selected an input for one bucket, you can use the
same input for subsequent buckets without adding it again

3. The dialog box will appear, prompting for an input folder directory.
Either enter the directory path manually, or click the “Choose Folder”
button to select an input folder.
4. Once you’ve chosen an input folder, click “Save”.

5. If you’d like to keep copies of the cases, ensure that the


“Preserve Original file in input folder” checkbox is checked.
Click Next to set the bucket name and threshold. The “Threshold”
value represents the minimum quality score for a scan routed to this
bucket’s output folder. For example, if a scan is scored with a Scan
Quality of 30 or above, it will be routed to this bucket.
6. In the next screen, setup the output folder using the “Choose Folder”
button and folder suffix in the “Append to Filename” input box. The
folder suffix will be appended to the end of the scan folder in the
output directory.

7. Click “Finish” to create the first bucket.

8. In order for Smart Margin to begin processing scans correctly, at


least one bucket with a threshold of “0” must be configured as
shown below.
9. Once you’ve configured the buckets, file scanning and processing
can begin. To start the file scanner, click the toggle in the top right.
