INFORMATION

LITERACY
Learning Targets:
In this unit, you should be able to:
• Classify the various aspects of
information literacy;

• Define each aspect; and


• Discuss in class how a particular
individual is portrayed in public in
each literacy type.
Information is a complex term that covers
data, knowledge(derived from study),
experience, or instruction, signals or symbols
In the 21st century, people rely
heavily on electronic or digital forms
of communication and with that,
society become more information
driven. Because of this, people need
to develop familiarity and skills in the
use of various information sources.
Information is often used to describe knowledge of
specific events or situations that has been gathered or
received by communication, intelligence or news.

Traditional Alphabetic
The basic of all the literacies.

The ability to read, speak and


write in a specific language.

The main objective of primary


education as it is the foundation
of all other literacies.
Cultural Literacy
The knowledge and awareness of societal
norms, customs and beliefs of cultures
apart from one’s own culture.

With this literacy, we are able to be aware


and accepting of the similarities and
differences between groups of people.

Avoiding biases, racism and other forms of


prejudice as well as being sensitive to
culture and others.
Library & Research Instruction
The particular set of abilities that allows
one person to find specific materials in the
library.

It entails the knowledge and understanding


of what materials are available for use in a
library, as well as how the materials in
libraries are arranged and classified.

It also includes awareness of research


process and how to cite materials in a
scholarly manner.
Computer Literacy
The knowledge of how to use a computer
effectively.

The basic component of Technological


literacy as it entails mastery of basic
computer functions.

Additionally, it includes knowledge of


basic file protection practices,
troubleshooting minor hardware
problems
Visual Literacy
The ability to make meaning
from visual images.

One should make be able to


make judgements on the
accuracy, genuineness and
value of images you come
across in the media.
Media Literacy
The ability to access, analyze,
evaluate and create media
messages of all kinds so that
a person can be a critical and
responsible participant in a
technology driven,
mediatized society.
Network Literacy
The understanding of the way
information is produced, transferred
in the networked society we live in.

It focuses on issues of Netizenship or


our increased use and participation on
the Internet, online rights and
responsibilities as well as online
behaviour.
