WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH AND WELL BEING OF MID LATE


ADOLESCENE
Worldwide 10-20% of children and adolescences experience mental disorder.
Half of all mental illness begin by the age of 14 and three quarters by mid 20s .
Neuropsychiatric conditions are the leading cause of disability in young people
in all regions if treated, these conditions severely influence children’s
development, their educational attainments and their potential to live fulfilling
and productive lives. Children with mental disorder face major challenges with
stigma, isolation and discrimination, as well as lack of access to health care and
education facilities, In violation of their fundamental human rights.
also according to the US National Institutes of Health, mental health includes our
emotional, Psychological and social well – being. It affects how we think, feel and
act as we cope with life.
It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.
Mental Health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and
adolescence through childhood.

CONCEPTS OF MENTAL HEALTH


Mental health is defined as a state of well being in which every individual
realizes his or her own potential, ca cope with the normal stresses of life can
work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his
community.

ii. Perceived self – efficacy
iii. Autonomy
iv. Competence
v. Intergenerational dependence
vi. Self – actualization of one’s intellectual and emotional

MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES AND CHALLENGES IN ADOLESCENES


- While the definition of adolescences can differ from culture to culture. It is
generally accepted that the time referred to as adolescences is the period
between childhood and adulthood , a sort of “no man’s land”
- The young persons begins to move from the family group being major social
system, to the family taking a lesser role and being part of a peer group
becomes a greater attraction that will eventually lead to the young person to
standing alone as an adult.

SELF ESTEEM AND BODY ESTEEM


Self-esteem is how you value and respect yourself as a person. Self-esteem
affects how you take care of yourself, emotionally, physically and spiritually.
Body image and self-esteem directly influence one another. ... When someone
doesn't like their body, they may not feel good about themselves or take care of
themselves.

ANXIETY DISORDERS/DEPRESSION

Depression and anxiety disorders are different, but people with depression often
experience symptoms similar to those of an anxiety disorder, such as nervousness,
irritability, and problems sleeping and concentrating. But each disorder has its own
causes and its own emotional and behavioral symptoms.

Many people who develop depression have a history of an anxiety disorder earlier in life.
There is no evidence one disorder causes the other, but there is clear evidence that many
people suffer from both disorders.

RISK FACTORS, RESILIENCE AND PREVENTION
The resiliency model of prevention focuses or risk and protective factors. Risk
factors and characteristics statistically associated with an increase in health risk –
for example, violence or substance abuse. Protective factors are characteristics
statistically associated with a decrease in the vulnerability to health risk. social
influences that increase our odds of experiencing a mental health condition

HEALTHY EATING AND MENTAL HEALTH

Experience of a mental health problem may also be associated with poorer diet and
physical health. There have been efforts to close the ‘mortality gap’ for people with
severe mental health problems, who on average tend to die 10 to 25 years earlier than the
general population.5 A number of factors may contribute to this premature mortality,
including dietary and nutritional factors, among other things..

i. Improve overall health and vitality


ii. Increased ability to concentrate
iii. Reduced irritability and mood swings
iv. Lowered risk of mental illness

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND MENTAL HEALTH


Physical activity improves emotions and mood, quality of life, self-esteem and
cognitive functioning. Physical activity reduces anxiety, depression and stress.
Aerobic activities (power walking, swimming, tennis, etc.) are effective: try 30
minutes of moderate- to vigorous-paced activity three-five days a week

ASSESSMENT
A mental health assessment is when a professional – like your family doctor, a
psychologist, or a psychiatrist – checks to see if you might have a mental problem
and what type of treatment may help – everyone goes through tough times, but
sometimes, the negative way someone feels inside – depressed, anxious, wanting to
avoid people, having trouble thinking may be more than the ups and downs most
people feel now and then.

SLEEP AND MENTAL HEALTH
Most teens need 9-11 hours of sleep every night. Problems not being fully rested
include:
i. Irritability
ii. Difficulty concentrating and learning
iii. Don’t move information from short-term to long memory as well
iv. Falling asleep in class
v. Mood swings and behavior problems
vi. More accident prone
vii. More prone to depression
