Division of Two Digit Numbers

Grade Level: 4-5

Objectives Following this activity, students will be able to:

look at two digit numbers and divide them by numbers 1-9
explain why dividing by two digits is different than dividing by
one

Materials Student: Pencil & paper. Teacher: Teaching surface & writing
utensil (chalkboard & chalk), Empressr Account

Procedures 1. Before beginning this activity, students should have the

following background information:
multiplication of numbers 1-10
the skills of division
division of two digits by one digit
2. Ask students how dividing with two digits is different than
dividing by a single digit number (1-9); how is it the same
3. Make sure students know how to divide by one digit
numbers before moving onto two digit numbers. Tell them
that they are going to learn how to divide by two digit
numbers
4. Show the class an example with physical objects such as
chips or coins so they can see what dividing by 11 or 13 is
like. Also show the Empressr slides with more physical
examples
5. Divide the students up into groups to practice dividing by
these larger two digit numbers.
6. Pass out a short worksheet with a couple examples they
can do on their own in their groups. Upon finishing them,
have the students talk amongst their classmates for help
with these problems.
7. After going over the worksheet answers with the class, ask
if the students have any questions.
8. Give the students a short homework assignment that looks
similar to the worksheet they did in class. This should be
returned the following day in class.
9. For additional help and practice have the students log onto
Empressr.com and look at the educational slides created
for this assignment.
