Basic principles for filling the coldboxes

1) The Perlite is to be fed pneumatically by means of dry, oil-free air, otherwise, via
atmospheric air with the silo. If there is no dry, oil-free air available also
dry N2 can be used taking special precautions.

2) All openings in the box are to be protected during filling such that no rain, snow or
moisture can enter the box. If the protective measures are not suffice during extreme
weather conditions, filling is to be interrupted and the box is to be sealed for a period of
interruption.

3) Nobody may enter the box after the filling process has been started.

4) Filling must always be carried out in sections from level to level starting at the bottom
moving to the top. Filling only from the roof is not permitted.

5) The maximum filling height from level to level is 12 meters

6) Number of manholes per level: P.U. boxes: 1

boxes erected on site: the number has to be defined according to necessity
(diagonal or at one the long sides)
To ensure homogenous filling of the Coldbox it should be filled via manholes that are
either diagonal to each other or at the extreme ends on the longer side of the box.

7) If there are a number of boxes connected together with different heights the lowest box
is to be filled first.

Preparation for filling Tooling Equipment damage  Safety devices (meshes, nets or grating covers) are prepared and fitted to the
filling openings, manhole covers and the exhaust openings on the roof. Workers

 All manhole covers are fitted with the specified seals. The seals have been
cleaned

 1 electric vibrator is to be mounted on the corner or center supports in the

lower third of each section to be filled. The vibrator settings are to be made
on-site with the Perlite supplier installation manager while ensuring as low a
vibration moment as possible.

Caution: No vibrators may be used in the close vicinity of partition boxes for liquid
flow measurements (e.g. Danfoss).

 Take sacks out of stock to prepared it for lifting

 It is not allowed to fill in humid perlite or abraded perlite!

 To be checked: humidity level
bulk weight and tamping
flow capability
abrasion

 Clarck Equipment damage  Filling cone is to be installed by PACKPRESF on one or more manholes in Superviseur
Filling
the roof.
 Crane Fatality Ouvriers
 All side sheet metal casing safety valves are to be locked during filling with Gruetier
the designed bolt connection. In the meantime the internal pressure of the
coldbox may not exceed 8 mbar. The sheet metal casing safety valves may
not be loaded with any weighty objects for functional reasons!

 Caution: No pressure may be applied to the piping system within the box
while the filling

 All manholes are to be closed apart from those for exhaust filters and those
on the lowest level where the filling is to be done.

 The 1 - 2 open manholes at the lowest level are to be prepared for the filling
process with Perlite filling hoses and distribution pipes up to approximately
the box centre. To prevent dust leaving the box the manholes should be
covered by filter cloths.

 Filling of the lowest box section to approximately 1 meter below the manholes
while ensuring even filling by utilising all available manholes. To assist even
internal Perlite distribution, move the distribution pipes around during filling. It
is important that it is considered that no hollow spaces are formed under
vessels.

 The cold box section that is actually being filled from a silo wagon or by
means of a Perlite production plant is to be vibrated below the Perlite level.
For this purpose, 1 electric vibrators are to be mounted outside of coldbox
either on corner or on central vertical struts of the box. The vibrators should
be in the lower third of the section whichis to be filled. The vibrator settings
are to be determined on site with the Perlite supplier installation manager to
ensure a low level of vibration moment.

Caution: No vibrators may be used in the close vicinity of bulkhead

boxes for liquid quantity measurements (e.g. Danfoss).

 A visual check is to be made after filling a 12 meter section to ensure that no
hollow spaces are formed under containers, fittings, pipes and colboxshell-
crossbeams and also that no conical heaps of more than approximately 20
degrees have formed. Vibration is to be repeated if necessary.

Caution: The box may not be entered for the visual check.

 After a positive visual check the hoses and distribution pipes are to be
transferred to the next higher level and the manholes of the lowest level are
to be closed.

 The above filling and vibrating process is repeated for each section until the
box is full. By use of suitable tools it may be necessary to manually distribute
the Perlite from the manholes into the corners directly under the roof, when
filling the top section from the roof.

 Then remove of filling cone .

 Remove safety meshes/grating covers from the roof manholes.

 Close all roof manholes.

 Check all screwed and clamped connections on the roof such as manholes,
gel pots, fittings gaiters for leaks. All necessary measures must be taken to
prevent the entry of moisture, rain and water.

 Loosen and log the locking of all side sheet metal casing safety valves and
record this procedure.

 Checking and recording of the box pressure cut-off or alarm by instrument

personnel.

Caution: No vacuum may exist in any part of the box as this will attract
moisture
from outside.

 The Perlite level is to be checked through the roof manholes after

approximately 1 week of operation. Precautions shall be taken to ensure
no injury to personnel due to 1 week of operation. Precautions shall be

taken to ensure no injury to personnel due to escaping N2 gas and that
nobody can fall into the perlite

 Further checks of the Perlite level are to be made by BUTEC during

operation of the plant.
