CHM031L CHEMISTRY FOR

ENGINEERS (LABORATORY)

CORROSION OF METALS
[LEARNING OBJECTIVES
q Observe the reactions of different metals
placed in aqueous solutions of various pH.
(CO1,2,3,4)

qDetermine the effect of mechanical stress on

the corrosion of metals. (CO1,2,3,4)

qDetermine the effects of metal coupling on

the corrosion of metals. (CO1,2,3,4)
[ CORROSION

• the process in which a metal, in

its uncombined form, is
transformed into oxides or
some other metal salt because
of its interaction with its
surroundings (usually moisture
in air).
• Causes gradual
deterioration/degradation of
metals
[ CORROSION
• electrochemical in nature,
and thus involves transfer of
electrons in the presence of
oxygen, but the process can
be affected further by
exposure to certain
substances such as salts or
other metals.

REACTIONS OF METALS WITH VARIOUS AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS
5 clean and bright nails
Slide carefully down each of the test tubes
Fill each test tube with the test solutions (0.1 M HCl,
0.1 M NaOH, 0.1 M NaCl, and distilled water and
control) such that the nails are completely immersed.
Stand overnight.

PREPARATION OF AGAR MEDIUM
~ 100 mL of dH2O in a beaker
Boil gently.
Remove the heat and add 0.5 g agar with stirring.
Continue heating with stirring until the agar is
dispersed.
Add 10 drops of 0.1 M K3Fe(CN)6 solution and 2
drops of phenolphthalein.
Stir and cool the mixture to lukewarm.

REACTION OF IRON AS INFLUENCED BY MECHANICAL STRESS
2 bright and clean nails
Place one nail on one side of the beaker/petri dish.
Bend the other nail sharply with a pair of pliers.
Place the bent nail on the other side of the beaker
as shown below.
Pour the cooled agar carefully until the nails are
covered completely.
Let it stand overnight.

[ Procedure
REACTIONS INVOLVING TWO METALS IN CONTACT
2 bright and clean nails
Wind a clean piece of copper strip around one iron nail.
Remove the nail and tighten the copper coil.
Reinsert the nail to the copper coil.
Do the same with zinc strip on the other nail.
Place the nails in a petri dish in a layout shown below.
Pour the lukewarm agar carefully until the nails is
covered completely.
Let it stand overnight.
