1. Stick or write a sentence on the board.


2. Tell them that we have just reviewed that a sentence contains a subject and a predicate. And
that we can find clauses and phrases in a sentence. However, this sentences or utterances are
composed by different words.
3. Start analyzing the sentence, piece by piece.
a. Noun: It is a naming word. It names a person, place, thing, idea, living creature, quality,
or action. Example: door, table, thought, darkness, arrival
b. Verb: It describes actions (doing something) or a state (being something). Example: walk,
talk, think, believe, live, like, want
c. Adjective: It describes a noun. It tells you something about the noun. Examples: big,
brown, tall, stupid, quick, interesting, easy.
d. Adverb: It usually describes a verb. It tells you how something is done. It may also tell
you when or where something happened. Example: slowly, well, fast, yesterday,
tomorrow, here, everywhere.
e. Pronoun: It is used instead of a noun. Examples, I, you, he, she, it, we, they.
f. Conjunction: It joins two words, phrases or sentences together. Examples: but, so, and,
because, or.
g. Preposition: It usually comes before a noun, pronoun or noun phrase. It joins the noun to
some other part of the sentence. Example: on in by with under, through, at.
h. Interjection: It is an unusual kind of word, because it often stands alone. Interjections are
words which express emotion or surprice, and they are usually followed by exclamation
marks. Examples: Ouch! Hello! Hurray! Oh no! Duh! Ha!
i. Determiner: It is used to introduce a noun.
i. Articles: the, a, an.
ii. Demonstratives: this, that, these, those
iii. Possessives: my, your, his, her, its our, you’re their
4. Give them two sentences so that they analyze them in terms of parts of speech. They will do this
activity in pairs.
5. We are just focusing on the form of the word. Bruno Mars drummed, danced, and crooned
(sing in a low voice) his way into America’s heart, while the Red Hot Chili Peppers rocked out in
tandem (in partnership or conjunction). (CNN, 2014)
