Matt coat. Coming back to the fuselage, I now
started on the decals. The set used I used was
from Moose Republic, and they are very nice.
One thing I was concerned about was the large
red wing number, and the tail decals. I felt these
would look obviously like decals and obscure a
lot of the surface detail. So, using some Tamiya
masking sheets, I made up some templates, and
airbrushed the numbers on. The colour was a
mix of red, and a little orange. The result was
better than I had expected. The rest of the decals
themselves went down very well and conformed
to the surfaces easily. I sealed the decals a Gloss
coat to give a good surface for the panel line
washes to come.
I could now move onto start the weathering
process. For the panel lines, I used a Dark Grey
wash, from Mig Productions. On the underside,
some Fuel Stain and Oil Stain washes were used
around the engine areas, and these washes
were then sealed with a Matt coat. When
that had dried, I used pastels to create some

designed in 1940 by North American Aviation (NAA) in response to a
requirement of the British Purchasing Commission. The Purchasing
Commission approached North American Aviation to build Curtiss
P-40 ighters under license for the Royal Air Force (RAF). Rather than
build an old design from another company, North American Aviation
proposed the design and production of a more modern ighter. The
prototype NA-73X airframe was rolled out on 9 September 1940, 102
days after the contract was signed, and irst lew on 26 October. The
Mustang was designed to use the Allison V-1710 engine, which had
limited high-altitude performance in its earlier variants. The aircraft
was irst lown operationally by the RAF as a tactical-reconnaissance
aircraft and ighter-bomber (Mustang Mk I). Replacing the Allison
with a Rolls-Royce Merlin resulted in the P-51B/C (Mustang Mk III)
model and transformed the aircraft’s performance at altitudes
above 15,000ft, without sacriicing range, allowing it to compete
with the Luftwaffe’s ighters. The deinitive version, the P-51D, was
powered by the Packard V-1650-7, a license-built version of the
two-speed two-stage-supercharged Merlin 66 and was armed with
six .50 calibre M2/AN Browning machine guns. From late 1943, P-51Bs

good pilots were hard to ind by the end of the
war and the diiculty of lying this aircraft made
it easy pickings. Unfortunately, there are no
surviving examples of the Ki44.
So on with the job of bringing the Ki44 to
life. This Hasegawa kit has a low parts count
with some excellent, crisp moulding with
generally nicely engineered and well-itting
parts. Like many of the Hasegawa 1:32 aircraft,
this kit was a little sparse on detail, particularly
in the cockpit. A minor annoyance which I’ve
encountered before is the kit is intended to
be built with a pilot igure but there are no
harnesses provided for completing the build
without a pilot. I generally try to avoid including
igures if possible because I feel they too easily
break the illusion of reality. I managed to get

my hands on an Eduard Big Ed detail set, which

provided masks for clear parts, coloured etch
interior detail and etched exterior detail. As
usual with detail sets, I picked and chose what
I thought was worthwhile and what I thought
was more efort than reward.
As is most of the case, the build started
in the cockpit. I improved the pilot’s seat
simply by drilling out the holes and generally
thinning the proile. The colour call out in
the instructions was for a green cockpit, but
references vary between green and blue, and
since the Eduard chose blue, I followed suit and
found an excellent match in Tamiya XF-50. The
Eduard instrument panels showed excellent
detail and once bonded into place I applied a
layer of liquid mask protection and sprayed the
cockpit and side walls in AK Interactive Xtreme
Metal White Aluminium followed by a coat of
hairspray. I then removed the liquid mask and
reapplied it only over the dials while I blended
the XF-50 into the preprinted parts to create a
seamless efect. I then proceeded to remove the
liquid mask and chip the blue topcoat, trying to
follow natural wear patterns where possible. I
then inished the job with UMP Dark Dirt Wash
and application of coloured etched harnesses.
These were lat coated with AK Interactive Ultra

Lockheed PV-1

Venturing with a
F Ventura
rom the outset I must admit that I
knew little about this aircraft when
I got the kit. To be honest, I was
attracted to the model by the size of
the box, the artwork and the price – a
real bargain! When I looked inside, I saw some
really beautifully detailed parts, however, I
was a bit concerned as some Revell kits had
a history of itting issues, but these concerns
were about to vanish as soon as I began to put
the kit together. This has to be one of the nicest
and easiest builds I have ever done, and I can
highly recommend this kit to modellers of all
abilities!

VENTURING WITH A VENTURA

I started assembling the interior parts, and for
the main interior colour I made a mix of Tamiya
XF-5 Flat Green and X-8 Lemon Yellow. I then

control columns and instrument panels, inishing
of with a black wash. Next, I ixed the two
fuselage halves together along with the wings
and tail. I then used Eduard masks and a little bit
of Humbrol Maskol to cover all the clear parts. ‘For
the primer I again used a mix of Tamiya XF-5 Flat
Green and X-8 Lime Yellow, but this time I focused
more on achieving Zinc Chromate primer colour,
as it was used on the real aircraft in World War II.
Don’t worry too much about getting the ‘right
shade’, as there were multiple manufacturers
producing Zinc Chromate primers, and the all
had diferent shades. Next, I took and old spare
brush and used it to apply more Humbrol Maskol,
dabbing on the areas where I wanted to show
some chipping.

Then when dry the salt was removed using

dry brush, or one moistened in water. Next, I
removed Maskol, to show the chipping efects,
but I thought I had over done it a little bit and it
looked to bright, but this was easily remedied
by spraying on another thinned coat of the base
colour.
Next, I gave the model a coat of Hataka XP09
Gloss and added the decals using Mr Mark
Setter NEO. For panel lines I used Tamiya Panel
Line Accent Black. I also added some colour
fading efects here and there by applying a
small drop of Ammo by MIG Oilbrushers - Grey
and Rust on top of the engines and using a
dry brush to unify these with the base colour.
Later I added some oil streaking efects on the
wings using Ammo by MIG Streaking Grime.
Once I was happy, I sealed model with Tamiya
X-35 Satin. I then removed the glazing masks
and added the antenna wires using Ammo MIG
.02mm Rigging Line. MA

For three-tone camoulage scheme I chose

Hataka, paints. On the upper surfaces I used
Hataka C001 Dark Sea Blue, for the mid-colour
I used C027 Intermediate Blue, and for the
lower surfaces I used C049 Insignia White. On
the upper part of the fuselage and wings I also
used the ‘rock salt technique’. Which is done by
moistening model with brush dipped in water
and then scattering rock salt over surfaces.
When water is dry, the rock salt sticks to the
surfaces so it won’t be easily blown by the air
from an airbrush. Then I sprayed a lightly a little
brighter and a more diluted mix of the base
colours for a more weathered aircraft look.
