Hardware
What is Smart
it?Platform
The AccuRay Smart Processing
Center (ASPC)
1989 - 2008
• Custom electronics
• Legacy technology
• Difficult to modify
• Supportability risks

Network Platform
Network Platform ASPC
2008 -
• Mostly standard electronics
• State-of-the-art technology
• Modern standards
• Easily supported, now & future
Hardware
What is it?
MPRC ECS Smart Platform
• Motorola 68040 (40 MHz)
• Custom-built for ABB
• 1980’s technology

RAM

Network Platform
Single-Board PC (Intel Pentium 1.1 GHz)
• Running Windows xP embedded
• No hard drive
• Application on Compact Flash
• Standard data acquisition board
• Custom boards are low-complexity
SBC (side 1) SBC (side 2)
Hardware
What did not change?

• Frame structure (+1)

• Serviceability (+1)
• Sensors & head package
• Cabling (for now)
Software
Application (objective C)
What is Smart
it?Platform
• Several obsolete & proprietary
Middleware
operating systems
GMOS Application • Obsolete version of C
AVOS

programming language
LVOS Micro kernel O/S
• Very limited resources for
MTOS ECS Hardware modifications
• 2-3 days to build, install and
MPRC Hardware test object code when source
has been modified
Network Platform
• Microsoft current standard high-
Application (C++/XML)
performance embedded O/S
Windows xP embedded • De-facto standard application
language C++
SBC Hardware • 2-4 hours to build, install and test
object code when source has been
modified
Why did we do it?
• Replacement of obsolete hardware
• Replacement of obsolete software
• Improved visibility and diagnostics
• Modern platform to enable continued product development for the
next 10-15 years
• Improved ease of use for the maintainer (tools, SW updates)
• Reduced training requirements
• More flexibility of sensor compliments
• Easier to configure in factory / project delivery
• Faster scanning (if needed) – 600 mm/sec now; maybe 1000 future
• Improved integration with 800xA Asset Optimization / Remote Diag.
• Environmental compliance (printed circuit board components)
Why did we do it?
• Current product is a platform to leap
forward into many new technology ideas:
– Currently using 25% of the RAM capability
– Currently using <10% of the CPU real-time
capability
– More rapid integration of new sensor
developments
– Platform for new ideas!
• Flexible scan patterns
• Wireless technology
•…
Network Platform
What is New?
1. New Processing Hardware
2. Faster Scanning (500 mm/second)
3. Higher Databox rates (250 DB/s)
4. New Software
5. New Troubleshooting Utilities
6. New Maintenance Utilities
7. Enhanced Health Pages
8. New Manuals and Functional Drawings
9. Sensors and Scanner Hardware Remain The Same as the Smart
Platform
10. Retrofit for Smart Platforms with -004 backplane.
