Description of the class: Students between 11-12 years old, 8 girls and 11 boys. The classes take
place on Mondays and Thursdays evening. The students (Ss) are generally receptive and show
enthusiasm towards topics like this. I hope this will happen on this occasion, too, taking into
account the fact that the lesson takes place as a demonstrative activity out of their classroom and
daily program.
Recent work: Students have studied basic aspects about Past Simple and Past Continuous,
namely forms (affirmative, negative and interrogative) and uses for each one.
Aims: 1. to develop SS’s listening, reading, speaking and writing skills;
2. to enlarge SS’ ability to communicate;
3. to consolidate SS’ knowledge about Past Simple and Past Continuous;
4. to enhance motivation;

CONTENTS

ACTIVITY 1: Warm up
Aims: - to get the students prepared for the lesson;
-to get them involved in the atmosphere of the English class.
Timing: about 5 minutes
Interaction: T-Ss; Ss-T;
Class management: lockstep
Procedure: The teacher greets the class, asks a few general questions about students’ mood,
feelings. The student on duty tells the absentees; the teacher writes the absentees in the
catalogue. The teacher asks the students about their homework (the students had to revise the list
of irregular verbs).

ACTIVITY 2: Lead-in
Aims: -to introduce the theme of the lesson;
-to revise the uses of Past Simple and Past Continuous;
Procedure: T writes on the blackboard the sentences: We visited our cousins last week.
She met Jack two years ago.
and asks the Ss to identify the verbs, to name the used tense and to explain its use.
Use: we use the Simple Past to talk about completed actions in the past.
T adds two more sentences and asks the SS the same questions:
We visited our cousins last week. They were waiting for us.
She met Jack two years ago at Sarah’s party. He was dancing.
The SS recognize the Past Continuous tense.
Use: we use the Past Continuous tense to talk about actions which were in progress at a
particular moment in the past.
Interaction: T SS, SST;
Class management: plenary, lockstep;
Timing: 10’
Aids: whiteboard, marker.

ACTIVITY 3: Practice
Aim: to equip learners with Past Simple and Past Continuous structures;
Procedure: T asks the Ss to have a look at some sentences and to complete them using the correct
Past Simple or Past Continuous forms (Appendix 1).
Interaction: TSS; ST;
Class management: individual work;
Timing: 10’
Aids: worksheet, whiteboard, markers

ACTIVITY 4: Speaking
Aim: to enlarge SS’ ability to communicate using Past Simple and Past Continuous;
Procedure: T asks the Ss to watch a short video
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9t4rt7M6wU). After that SS are asked to discuss about the
actions in the video using Past Simple and Past Continuous.
Interaction: TSS; SST;
Class management: plenary;
Timing: 8’
Aids: PC, video projector.

ACTIVITY 4: Feedback and Writing

Aim: to practice writing skills using Past Simple and Past Continuous;
Procedure: T asks the SS to form three groups consisting of five members. Each group is given
some key-words that SS have to use in order to make up some sentences about the past
(Appendix 2). What each group will finally obtain will be a mini-narrative structure. The
spokesmen of each group will be asked to read their structures aloud and after that SS will decide
which is the correct order of the three narrative sequences to get a proper narration.
Interaction: TSS; ST; SS;
Class management: groups;
Timing: 10’
Aids: worksheets.

ACTIVITY 5: Homework assignment

Ss are praised, encouraged and given final suggestions, also some conclusions are drawn.
As homework, SS will have to write a short paragraph (50 words) in which to describe a
past event that happened to them last week. They should use Past Simple and Past Continuous.
Timing: 2’

ADDITIONAL POSSIBILITIES: If there is extra time, SS will do a speaking activity based on

their own past experience and making use of Past Simple and Past Continuous.
