Research Topic Title:

Tubli Plant ( Derris Elliptica Benth.): Mosquito Terminator

Rationale/ Significance of the Research Topic:

This study is very significant to the following:

A. Community

They will know how to control mosquitoes in a cheaper way and natural way instead
of using expensive and hazardous chemical from using mosquito repellant.

B. LGU and Rural Health Unit

Formulation and program enhancement against the dengue control in the Municipality
of Calatrava. Support for livelihood program for the indigents in far flung areas.

C. Future researhers

It will serve as a reference for their further research innovations and deeper re-
research.
Brief Background of the Research Topic:

Calatrava is rich on natural resources, forest and agricultural products. However, there is
a lack of innovative development and initiatives to produce organic mosquito terminator on the
increasing number of dengue cases.

Derris elliptica Benth has previously known as an important source of compounds with
broad- spectrum insecticidal properties . The plant is a bushy, leguminous vine usually found
near a river or a creek. It has bright green leaves that have 9-13 sword shape or oblong leaflets
with pronounced ponted tips. The flowers are pink to rose- white and grow in grape- like clusters
of 15- 25 cm length. The fruit is a brown leathery pod with one to three flat seeds. Derris is a
genus of the family Papillionaceae. It is locally known in Southeast Asia countries as “ Derris”
or “ Tuba” and in Thailand as “ Lotin” or “ Hang lai daeng”. Extracts from the stems and roots of
this plant have been used over the centuries as fish poisons and as insecticidal preparations.
These properties are mainly due to the presence of rotenone, a compound that is highly toxic to
cold- blooded animals, specially fish and insects.

Plant roots of Derris contains rotenone as a toxic substance. In addition, it also contains
related compounds like sumatrol, deguelin and toxicarol. Rotenone is classified by the World
Health Organization as a moderately hazardous Class II pesticide. There are some reports
indicating that an exposure to rotenone may cause toxicity to mammals. However, rotenone is
usually used in small quantities and it is rapidly broken down in soil and water. Almost all
toxicity maybe lost after 2-3 days of summer exposures. Rotenone is therefore good for the
environment and safe for agriculturists and other users.

It is a public knowledge that the juice obtained from raw root of derris is diluted with
water to use it as an insecticide. It is also well-known that alcohol extracts of its dried roots, is
diluted with soap water to use it for the same purpose. However, the principal ingredient of derris
loses their insecticidal activity when it contacts water for a time. In addition, it is very unstable
against alkali as well as water. Moreover, rotenone decomposes in the presence of light and air
therefore its efficacy for controlling of many insects remained only for a short period of time
after application.

Research Objectives:

This study entitled Tubli Plant ( Derris Elliptica Benth.): Mosquito Terminator
necessitates unveiling solutions to larva control of mosquitoes.

Further, it sought answers to the following questions:

1. Is Tubli plant an effective mosquito terminator?

2. What are possible formulations beside from its extract could be produced in tubli?
Methodology and Major Activities:

This study will employ the experimental method. The experimental method is usually
taken to be the most scientific of all methods, the ‘method of choice’. The main problem with all
the non- experimental method is lack of control over the situation. The experimental method is a
means of trying to overcome this problem. The experiment is sometimes described as the the
cornerstone of psychology. This is partly due to the central role experiments play in many of the
physical sciences and also to pshchology’s historical view of itself as a science. A considerable
amount of psychological research uses the experimental method. An experiment is a study of
cause and effect. It differs from non- experimental methods in that it involves the deliberate
manipulation of one variable, while trying to keep all other variables constant.

The following are the process that need to be undertaken in the research:

1. Collection of the material( Tubli roots).

2. Preparing Tubli for extraction.
3. Careful extraction of Tubli and putting the extract to a clear bottle.
4. Setting up of the solutions for the test for mosquitos.
5. Observing and recording data.
6. Processing other formulation of Tubli product.

Conclusion:

Preliminary efficacy testing under laboratory conditions indicated that the derris extract
concentrate was effective as mosquito terminator. The efficacy of derris formulations may be
improved by repeated application or addition of extract to increase the effectiveness of rotenone.

Other formulations for Derris was powder, dried roots and capsule.

ABSTRACT

This research can be used as a guidance for suitable selection of extraction method and

preparation process in formulation development. The locally produced, cheap and safe

formulated products of natural pesticides will be alternative formulations for utilization in

agricultural in agricultural sector. Derris is very known in rotenone, a classified hazardous Class

II pesticide.

This study determined the effectiveness of Derris Elliptica Benth as mosquito terminator.

It used the experimental type of research with a complete observation and gathering of data. It

used three (3) kinds of solutions with the following breakdown 40 mL tap water plus 20 mL

derris extract and 40 mL plain tap water, 40 mL canal water plus 20 mL derris extract and 40 mL

plain canal water and 40 mL rainwater plus 20 mL derris extract and 40 mL plain rainwater.

It was observed within the period of ten days. It was found that mosquito attempted to

lay eggs in the solutions with derris extract but found dead. It is a strong manifestation that larva

could not survive therefore it is very good control in mosquitos.

Other formulations of derris were powder, capsule and dried roots. These developed

formulations containing derris extract could be be diluted with water before application and

should be occasionally shaken during application.
