Q. Define Clothing.

Clothing (also known as clothes and attire) is fiber and textile material worn on the body.

Or,

Clothes are garments worn on the body for protection or adornment.

Q. Define textile and also give the importance of textiles in daily life. Also give the
importance of the textile industry in Pakistan.

Origin:

The word textile is derived from a Latin word texere ,which means ‘to weave’.

Definition:

A cloth, especially one manufactured by weaving or knitting.

Or,

Any cloth or goods produced by weaving, knitting, or felting.

Importance of textile industry in daily life:

 The manufacture of textiles provides an economic boost to many countries in the

world. Economies can be made or broken with the addition or loss of textile
production. The textile industry is very important in bringing in money and jobs to
developing countries like Bangladesh, Shi Lanka, and Cambodia.
 Medical Implants - Many hip joints, artificial valves and vessels, and other implants
are made with textiles. These devices have improved the lives of many people.
 Fire Repellant - Firemen the use textiles every day, from gear made with fire
repellant materials to hoses that can be rolled up and put away.
 Dental - A toothbrush and dental floss are also textiles. What if we didn't have these
options for cleaning our teeth?
 Military Use - Camouflage clothing, gear, and bags are just a few textiles made for
military use. Without these items, soldiers would be unable to blend into their
environment or effectively carry their gear into the field.
 Textiles are thus a major component of material culture. They may be viewed as the
products of technology, as cultural symbols, as works of art, or as items of trade. The
textile arts are a fundamental human activity, expressing symbolically much of what
is valuable in any culture.

Importance of textile industry in Pakistan:

 Textile industry is considered to be the backbone of the economy of the Islamic

republic of Pakistan.
 Pakistan’s textile industry is the fourth largest cotton producer and the sixth largest
importer of raw cotton.
 Pakistan is the third largest consumer.
 Cotton based textiles contribute over 60% of the total exports, and accounts for the
46% of the total manufacturing and provide employment to 38% of the
manufacturing labor force.
 The availability of cheaper labor force and raw cotton Pakistan has built up a massive
cotton industry.
 In Asia, Pakistan is the 8th largest exporter of textile products and 3rd largest cotton
exporter.
