Consider the automotive spark-ignition power cycle

Processes
1) Intake stroke
2) Compression stroke
3) Power (expansion) stroke
4) Exhaust stroke

The Air-Standard Otto Cycle is the ideal cycle that approximates the spark-ignition combustion engine

Process Description
1-2 Isentropic Compression
2-3 Constant Volume Heat Addition
3-4 Isentropic Expansion
4-1 Constant Volume Heat Rejection

Thermal Efficiency of the Otto Cycle:

Wnet Qnet Qin  Qout Q

 th     1  out
Qin Qin Qin Qin
The thermal efficiency becomes

(T4  T1 )
 th , Otto  1
(T3  T2 )
T1 (T4 / T1  1)
 1
T2 (T3 / T2  1)
Since V3 = V2 and V4 = V1 we see that

The Otto Cycle Efficiency becomes
