a. Background of the Author

Daryll Delgado

Preludes is a 21st Century short story written by Daryll Delgado, a Filipino

writer. The story was set in a natural setting with its distinct culture, with a theme
of one of the issues in the Philippines: Gender Inequality.

Daryll Delgado is a brilliant fictionist and the author of the short story
collection After the Body Displaces water—has become a more voracious reader
than ever. As a young girl, the books she read made her want to be a detective, or a castaway sailor, a
Russian priest, a Japanese boy, or a dog.

DARYLL DELGADO’s first book of short stories, After the Body Displaces Water (USTPH, 2012),
won the 32nd National Book Award for Short Fiction, and was a finalist in the 2013 Madrigal-Gonzales
First Book Award. She has also received a Philippines Free Press award for her fiction in 2010. Her more
recent works have appeared in Maximum Volume 1 (Anvil, 2013); AGAM (2013); Our Memory of Water
(Ateneo de Naga Press, 2016), and High Chair. She has been a lecturer at the University of the
Philippines, the Ateneo de Manila University, and Miriam College. She currently works for the Southeast
Asia office of an international labor and human rights NGO. Daryll has a BA in Journalism and MA in
Comparative Literature from UP Diliman. She currently resides in Quezon City with her husband,
William. She was born and raised in Tacloban City (in the Visayas, the central part of the Philippines)
and continues to call Tacloban home.

b. Background of the text.

Preludes focus on the story about a married women and about her husband that has affairs with
other women even though her husband is cheating on her she doesn’t mind it instead she continued to
nurse her husband back to health.

Significant of the text

The topic of the text is called Preludes.

The preludes tackle about women who experience concubinage and it also about preludes itself,
preludes is a piece of music that introduces to a longer piece. In the story Nenita the main character of
the story and her husband who died after singing he sang a total of three song before he collapse in
Municipal hall Nenita knew that his husband was happy she often heard his husband sing she recognize
the song he was singing , a Spanish song about kissing someone for the last time. She imagine she
become younger dancing with a dark man that would eventually become her husband and there was
applause while Nenita return to her house while laughing at her silliness.
