The goal of this procedure is to use the JB1 test fixture to:
1. Compensate for eddy currents.
2. Determine if external magnetic interference or vibration disturbances are contributing
to image quality problems.
Background (Home)
One of the main factors influencing the quality of images generated by MRI systems is
the purity of the static magnetic field. Any interference, other than gradients, that distorts
the static magnetic field will negatively impact image quality.
Three of the main types of interference that field engineers must deal with are eddy
currents, external magnetic interference, and vibration. Use of the JB1 test fixture enables
field engineers to compensate for eddy currents and test for the presence of AC
interference and vibration disturbances in a quick and efficient manner.

NOTE 1: The vertical position of the channel 2 waveform will never be altered by
using the oscilloscope controls after this step. If you move the vertical position of the
channel 2 waveform after this step using the oscilloscope controls, the gain
relationship between channels 1 and 2 will be altered and your eddy current
adjustments will not be accurate.
NOTE 2: If the channel 2 waveform ever goes out of view after this step and you
need to adjust its vertical position to bring it back in view, use the Level control on
the front of the integrator.
NOTE 3: The Level control on the integrator is next to OFFSET 1. Be careful not to
accidentally turn OFFSET 1 when you intend to turn the Level. Turning OFFSET 1
changes the slope of the channel 1 and 2 traces. These traces must be carefully
maintained during eddy current adjustment. If you accidentally turn OFFSET 1,
you must repeat the steps for removing instrument-induced slope in the integrator
or your eddy current adjustments will not be accurate. (See steps 25-26 for details
on removing instrument-induced slope.)

23. Using OFFSET1 on the integrator, adjust the channel 1 signal so that it is flat.
24. Using 4VR on the integrator, adjust the amplitude of the channel 1 signal to 2.5V
+/- 0.1V. You may have to adjust the vertical position of channel 1 using the
channel 1 vertical positioning control on the oscilloscope.
Note: The amplitude and slope of the channel 1 signal should look like the trace shown in
the following figure:

Remove any instrument-induced slope from the integrator in the oscilloscope traces.
26. Adjust OFFSET 1 on the front of the integrator to make the bottom of channel 1
and the top of channel 2 as flat as possible. Any small slope in the channel 1
signal should be a “mirror image” in the channel 2 signal and should be the
same magnitude in both channel 1 and channel 2.
When you have accomplished this, you have eliminated any “instrument-induced”
slope in the oscilloscope traces. At this point, the signals are only representative
of the actual magnetic field pulse in the gantry bore. See the figures below for
references:

In this example, the magnitudes of the slopes channels 1 and 2 are approximately the
same (~15 mV), but they are not mirror images of each other.
In this example, the magnitudes of the slopes in channels 1 and 2 are different (channel 1
is approximately 40 mV and channel 2 is approximately 10 mV). In addition, the slopes
are not mirror images of each other.

Adjusting for eddy currents requires you to make adjustments to variable resistors (VRs)
on the GC control board based on your observations of the flatness and rise time of the
channel 2 signal.
SPECIFICATION: Eddy currents have been effectively compensated for when the
channel 2 flatness is < 5 mV and the channel 2 rise time is <= 1.5 msec. (Flatness and rise
time are defined in the steps below).
27. Set the oscilloscope controls as follows to view the flatness of the channel 2
signal:
28. Use the vertical position control on the oscilloscope to position the channel 1
signal near the middle of the viewing area on the oscilloscope.
29. Use the Level control on the integrator to position the top of the channel 2 signal
below the channel 1 signal.
30. Use the oscilloscope controls to move the rising edge of the signals to the center
of the display.
Your oscilloscope display now shows the flatness of the channel 2 signal.

The following figures show examples of channel 2 signals that have flatness in and
out of specification. Fig. A shows an example of what the flatness should look like
when eddy currents are effectively compensated for. Note that there is essentially no
change in voltage in the top of the channel 2 signal (~ 2 mV).
Fig. B and Fig. C show examples of what the flatness can look like when eddy
currents are not effectively compensated for. Note that the flatness in Fig. B. is
approximately 30 mV and in Fig. C. is approximately 35 mV:

31. Adjust the VRs on the GC control board until the flatness of the channel 2 signal
< 5 mV. (See table below for VR details.)
• Begin by adjusting the largest time constant (CR1) and then work back (from
right to left). Exception: If you have a large spike, remove the spike first.
Note: The GC control board has variable resistors (VRs) for each gradient that can be
used to bring the flatness and rise time of the gradient within specification, as shown in
the following table:
Flatness
Note: There are five
time constants (CR1 –
CR5) that characterize
the range of the
waveform that you can
use to help determine
which VRs to use.

Example: To impact

HITACHI Medical Systems America Inc. MRP 5000, MRP 7000, AIRIS and AIRIS II Systems
Part Number: L0E-BMA115-1 September 6, 2000
TIP 1: The AIRIS II, AIRIS, and MRP 7000 gain and time VRs shown in the table above
work in pairs. For example, if you want to adjust CR1 on the AIRIS II Z-axis gradient,
you must adjust both 321 and 322VR.
TIP 2: As you are adjusting the time constants from right to left, you should see the
flatness of the waveform begin expanding from right to left. During the course of your
adjustments, when the VRs you are adjusting lose their effectiveness or begin to
adversely effect the flatness of the waveform (e.g., humps begin to appear), move to the
next set of VRs. If you get stuck, do not hesitate to turn all of the VRs counter-clockwise
as far as they can go and start the VR adjustments over.
NOTE: Do not proceed to step 32 until the flatness of the channel 2 signal is < 5 mV.
32. Use the vertical position control on the oscilloscope to position the channel 1
signal at 0 VDC.
33. Use the Level control on the integrator to position the top of the channel 2 signal
at 0 VDC.
Note: When you have the oscilloscope properly adjusted, Channel 1 is sitting right on top
of channel 2. Fig A shows what this looks like in theory. Fig B shows what this looks like
in reality.

Note: It is very important that you line up the rising edge of channels 1 and 2 as shown in

oscilloscope required to obtain the necessary views later in the rise time adjustment
portion of this procedure.

The following figures show examples of how the rise time will likely appear after the
flatness of the channel 2 signal is < 5 mV. Fig. A shows an example of what rise time
should look like when eddy currents are effectively compensated for. The rise time in
Fig. A is ~ 1.5 msec (1500 microsec). Fig. B shows an example of what rise time can
look like when eddy currents are not effectively compensated for. The rise time in Fig. B
is ~1.75 msec (1750 microsec):
Note: You may have to use the horizontal position control on the oscilloscope to get the
channel 1 and channel 2 signals centered on the oscilloscope as shown in Fig. A and B.

35. If the rise time is not within specification, change the sweep on the oscilloscope to
50 msec (the flatness view) and adjust the VRs. Focus on the very left part of the
curve.
NOTE: You cannot adjust VRs when viewing rise time (sweep set to 500
microsec) because your adjusting perspective is distorted at this sweep setting. If

you attempt to adjust VRs at 500 microsec, you will move your flatness out of
specification.
36. After adjusting the VRs with the sweep set to 50 msec, set the sweep back to 500
microsec to view their effect on rise time.
37. Repeat steps 35 and 36 until the rise time is <= 1.5 msec (1500 microsec).

10. If you observe an EMI signal higher than 50 mV, verify that the signal is true EMI
interference and not a problem with the system by completing the following steps:
a) Remove the end of the coaxial cable attached to the JB1 test fixture and attach a
BNC short to it.
b) Observe the oscilloscope display. If the signal you were viewing disappears, it is
EMI. Determine the source of the disturbance and attempt to remove it. If you
cannot remove the disturbance, a magnetic field compensator must be used to
offset the interference. Contact technical support for more information.
c) If the signal is still present, there is a problem with the setup. Check all of your
cable and connections and repeat the procedure. If problems with the setup
persist, contact technical support.

on a good system. Hard stepping or bouncing on the balls of your feet outside the
shielded room should not cause a disturbance to the magnet.
• If the vibration disturbance is caused by air handling equipment, the vibration signal
will be fairly consistent amplitude with a frequency of 9 to 12 Hz.
• When testing vibration with large magnetic fluctuations from subways etc., it may be
necessary to ac couple the digital storage scope since the signal will be modulated
by these large low frequency disturbances.
Remember; vibration signals from the AIRIS system have a resonant frequency of 9
to 12 Hz. This is very important to separate magnetic fluctuations from vibration
anomalies.

Eddy Currents
The following table outlines the major issues associated with eddy currents that will
facilitate your troubleshooting in this area:
No eddy current
compensation
Times when you need If compensated for properly, generally only during installation
to address them and when you replace the GC control board.
Symptoms Ringing and shading artifacts. In some cases, total loss of
signal is possible.
Note: Eddy currents cannot be removed, but they can be compensated for. Because the
gradient magnetic field pulses will be distorted by the magnetic field created by the eddy
currents, the trick is to adjust the shape of the gradient magnetic field pulses so that after
they are affected by the eddy currents, they have the desired shape. This is done by
adjusting the wave shape of the DC pulses that drive the gradient coils, as shown in the
following figure:

The following table outlines the major issues associated with AC external magnetic
interference that will facilitate your troubleshooting in this area:
Note: If the source of the external magnetic interference cannot be removed, a magnetic
field compensator must be used to offset the interference. A magnetic field compensator
consists of a coil placed in the ceiling above the MRI system and a field compensation
unit that powers the coil. The idea is to have the compensator coil create a magnetic field
that cancels out the effects of the external magnetic interference.

The goal of this procedure is to adjust the longitudinal photo-sensors on the patient table
so that their detection thresholds are set between their maximum and minimum detection
positions. This is necessary because if a photo-sensor’s threshold is set too low, the
photo-sensor may fail to detect the table. If a photo-sensor’s threshold is set too high, the

The patient table moves up and down (vertically), side to side (laterally), and in and out
(longitudinally). A combination of limit switches and photo-sensors is used to determine
its position.
There are eight (8) photo-sensors on the patient table (1PMS, 2PMS, 3PMS, 4PMS,
5PMS, 6PMS, 7PMS, and 8PMS). 5PMS and 6PMS are used to determine the lateral
position of the table and are not adjustable. 1PMS, 2PMS, 3PMS, 4PMS, 7PMS, and
8PMS are used to determine longitudinal position of the table and are adjustable.
• 1PMS and 2PMS: Used to detect the longitudinal position of the table at/near the
foremost end of the unit. 2PMS detects when the table is at its foremost longitudinal
position. 1PMS detects when the table is 100mm away from its foremost longitudinal
position. When 1PMS detects the table, the system limits the speed of the table to
20mm/sec to prevent hard impacts.
• 3 PMS and 4PMS: Used to detect the longitudinal position of the table at/near the rear
of the unit. 4PMS detects when the table is at its rearmost position. 3PMS detects
when the table is 150mm away from its rearmost position. When 3PMS detects the
table, the system limits the speed of the table to 20mm/sec to prevent hard impacts.

• 7PMS: Used to determine when lateral table motion is permitted. Lateral table motion
is permitted as long as the table is within 300 mm of its rearmost position.
• 8PMS: Used to determine the absolute longitudinal position of the table. This is a
momentary measurement. 8PMS is set momentarily when the table is 60mm from its
rearmost position.

The table covers must be removed to see the photo-sensors. 1PMS and 2PMS are located
near the forward end of the unit and can be seen from the side. 3PMS and 4PMS are
located near the rear of the unit and can be seen from the side. 7PMS and 8PMS are
located near the rear of the unit about 10 cm up from 3PMS. 7PMS and 8PMS cannot be
seen from the side, they must be viewed from beneath the table. The following figure

There are three distinct reflector mechanisms associated with the photo-sensors on the
table:
• Photo-sensors 1PMS, 2PMS, 3PMS, and 4PMS detect the presence of the table when
the short perpendicular plate attached underneath the table breaks their beam.
• Photo-sensor 7PMS detects the presence of the table when the long thin reflective
plate attached to the bottom of the table breaks its beam.
• Photo-sensor 8PMS momentarily detects the presence of the table when the short
elbow attached to the end of the long thin reflective plate that 7PMS detects breaks its
beam.
The following figure shows the location of these reflective devices. (Note: This shot is
taken looking up from the ground beneath the table):

wish to adjust. Refer to table 1.
The following figure shows an example of how your setup should look at this point.
Our specialist in this picture is preparing to adjust 3PMS:
a) Position the table such that it can be firmly sensed by the photo-sensor.
b) Turn the volume control on the photo-switch COUNTER-CLOCKWISE until the
signal on the multi-tester goes low (i.e., to zero volts).

a) From the minimum position, turn the volume control CLOCKWISE until the
signal goes high. This is your “low detection” position, or “A” position.
b) Move the table out of the photo-sensor’s view.
c) Continue rotating the volume control CLOCKWISE until you see the photo-
sensor go high or until you get to the marked “MAX” position on the photo-
sensor. The point at which the photo-sensor goes high is the maximum position. If
the photo-sensor does not go high before you reach the marked “MAX” position,
the marked “MAX” position is considered to be the maximum position.
Note the maximum position. You will need this in Step #7 below.

HITACHI Medical Systems America Inc. HOBO RH/Temp Data Logger
Part Number: L0E-BMA113-1 June 27, 2000
The goal of this procedure is to collect reliable relative humidity and temperature data in
magnet rooms using the HOBO RH/Temp data logger to determine whether or not these
variables are within specification.
Specifications (Home)
The following temperature and relative humidity specifications apply to AIRIS and
AIRIS II systems:
• The temperature in the scan room must be maintained between 70o and 80 o F.
• The maximum allowable temperature change in the scan room is +/- 3 o F per hour.
• The relative humidity in the scan room must be maintained between 45% and 80%.
Background (Home)
The most common temperature-related problems experienced in the field concern the rate
of temperature change in the scan room. Temperature changes in the scan room that
exceed +/- 3 o F per hour result in a decrease in the quality of images produced by the
MRI system. This is because the system’s internal heating mechanism designed to
maintain the magnet temperature to within 0.1o C can not keep up with temperature
changes that exceed +/- 3 o F per hour. When temperature movements at these rates occur,
cold spots develop in the magnet, which adversely effect the static homogeneity of the
magnet and thus image quality.
Problems in MRI systems caused by relative humidity are relatively rare; however, the
following issues can be raised when the relative humidity is out of specification:
• If the relative humidity falls below 45%, the risk of static shock increases.
• If the relative humidity rises above 80%, the risk of shorts occurring due to
condensation increases.

10. Wiggle the coil plug back and forth. Wiggling the plug should NOT cause the coil ID
LED’s on the MJ1 coil analyzer to flicker. If the coil ID LED’s turn on and off while
you are moving the plug, you could have a worn out coil cable plug or a damaged
wire in the cable. The coil ID LED’s are identified in the following figure:

The goal of this procedure is to install, adjust, and troubleshoot the AIRIS II FatSep
software option. The FatSep software option is available in system versions V4.2A and
up.
Background (Home)
The purpose of the FatSep software option is to enable users to obtain an image for water
and an image for fat separately. Adjusting the software during installation consists of
getting the differences between the FOV’s of water and fat images to be within 1mm of
each other. This procedure does not deal with adjusting the FOV’s themselves.
NOTE: This procedure will be much easier to perform if you ensure that the system’s
FOV’s are adjusted properly before you start.

The goal of this procedure is to install the field service system CD-ROM on Altaire or
AIRIS II systems.
Background (Home)
System software, patches, and options have historically been supplied to HMSA
engineers on optical disks. To decrease costs, system software is now being supplied on
CD-ROMs for Altaire and AIRIS II systems (patches and options will continue to be
supplied via optical disks). To enable engineers to load system software onto these
systems, each engineer is being given a CD-ROM drive. This procedure shows how to
install the CD-ROM drive on Altaire and AIRIS II systems.
