Procedure Goal (Home)

The goal of this procedure is to use the JB1 test fixture to:
1. Compensate for eddy currents.
2. Determine if external magnetic interference or vibration disturbances are contributing
to image quality problems.

Background (Home)

One of the main factors influencing the quality of images generated by MRI systems is
the purity of the static magnetic field. Any interference, other than gradients, that distorts
the static magnetic field will negatively impact image quality.

Three of the main types of interference that field engineers must deal with are eddy
currents, external magnetic interference, and vibration. Use of the JB1 test fixture enables
field engineers to compensate for eddy currents and test for the presence of AC
interference and vibration disturbances in a quick and efficient manner.

Required Tools (Home)

The tools required to complete this procedure are listed below:

Tool Purpose
JB1 Test Fixture Used to sense the pulse of the magnetic field caused by the
gradient coil current. It can also be used to sense changes in the
static magnetic field caused by external magnetic interference and
vibration.
Integrator Integrates the voltage pulse induced in the JB1 test fixture so that
the resultant waveform displayed on the oscilloscope bears the
same shape as the initial magnetic field pulse.

The electronics within the integrator provide two representations

of the same impulse simultaneously:

• Channel 1 shows the entire waveform—this is used for

reference
• Channel 2 shows the upper 2% of the waveform—this is used
for making fine adjustments to the waveform

Digital Storage Used to display the two representations of the magnetic field
Oscilloscope pulse from the integrator
Small Screwdriver Used to adjust the controls on the control board of the MRI unit
and the integrator
BNC Short Used to short the connection between the integrator and the JB1
test fixture.

NOTE 1: The vertical position of the channel 2 waveform will never be altered by
using the oscilloscope controls after this step. If you move the vertical position of the
channel 2 waveform after this step using the oscilloscope controls, the gain
relationship between channels 1 and 2 will be altered and your eddy current
adjustments will not be accurate.

DO NOT USE THIS

CONTROL AGAIN

NOTE 2: If the channel 2 waveform ever goes out of view after this step and you
need to adjust its vertical position to bring it back in view, use the Level control on
the front of the integrator.

NOTE 3: The Level control on the integrator is next to OFFSET 1. Be careful not to
accidentally turn OFFSET 1 when you intend to turn the Level. Turning OFFSET 1
changes the slope of the channel 1 and 2 traces. These traces must be carefully
maintained during eddy current adjustment. If you accidentally turn OFFSET 1,
you must repeat the steps for removing instrument-induced slope in the integrator
or your eddy current adjustments will not be accurate. (See steps 25-26 for details
on removing instrument-induced slope.)

26. Adjust OFFSET 1 on the front of the integrator to make the bottom of channel 1
and the top of channel 2 as flat as possible. Any small slope in the channel 1
signal should be a “mirror image” in the channel 2 signal and should be the
same magnitude in both channel 1 and channel 2.

When you have accomplished this, you have eliminated any “instrument-induced”
slope in the oscilloscope traces. At this point, the signals are only representative
of the actual magnetic field pulse in the gantry bore. See the figures below for
references:

Example 3: Incorrect Offset (Not mirror image)

In this example, the magnitudes of the slopes channels 1 and 2 are approximately the
same (~15 mV), but they are not mirror images of each other.

Example 4: Incorrect Offset (Not mirror image, different magnitudes)

In this example, the magnitudes of the slopes in channels 1 and 2 are different (channel 1
is approximately 40 mV and channel 2 is approximately 10 mV). In addition, the slopes
are not mirror images of each other.

Compensate for the effect of eddy currents in the Z-axis gradient.

Adjusting for eddy currents requires you to make adjustments to variable resistors (VRs)
on the GC control board based on your observations of the flatness and rise time of the
channel 2 signal.

SPECIFICATION: Eddy currents have been effectively compensated for when the
channel 2 flatness is < 5 mV and the channel 2 rise time is <= 1.5 msec. (Flatness and rise
time are defined in the steps below).

27. Set the oscilloscope controls as follows to view the flatness of the channel 2
signal:

28. Use the vertical position control on the oscilloscope to position the channel 1
signal near the middle of the viewing area on the oscilloscope.

29. Use the Level control on the integrator to position the top of the channel 2 signal
below the channel 1 signal.

30. Use the oscilloscope controls to move the rising edge of the signals to the center
of the display.

Your oscilloscope display now shows the flatness of the channel 2 signal.

The following figures show examples of channel 2 signals that have flatness in and
out of specification. Fig. A shows an example of what the flatness should look like
when eddy currents are effectively compensated for. Note that there is essentially no
change in voltage in the top of the channel 2 signal (~ 2 mV).

Fig. B and Fig. C show examples of what the flatness can look like when eddy
currents are not effectively compensated for. Note that the flatness in Fig. B. is
approximately 30 mV and in Fig. C. is approximately 35 mV:

Fig. A: Channel 2 Flatness ~ 2 mV Fig. B: Channel 2 Flatness ~30 mV

31. Adjust the VRs on the GC control board until the flatness of the channel 2 signal
< 5 mV. (See table below for VR details.)
• Begin by adjusting the largest time constant (CR1) and then work back (from
right to left). Exception: If you have a large spike, remove the spike first.

• IMPORTANT: After every VR adjustment, repeat steps 25-26 above to nullify

any new instrument induced slope. Your measurements of rise time and
flatness are only valid if they are taken with no instrument-induced slope.

Note: The GC control board has variable resistors (VRs) for each gradient that can be
used to bring the flatness and rise time of the gradient within specification, as shown in
the following table:

use to help determine
which VRs to use.

Example: To impact
the overall range
Time
(CR1) of the Z-axis

19
HITACHI Medical Systems America Inc. MRP 5000, MRP 7000, AIRIS and AIRIS II Systems
Part Number: L0E-BMA115-1 September 6, 2000

TIP 1: The AIRIS II, AIRIS, and MRP 7000 gain and time VRs shown in the table above
work in pairs. For example, if you want to adjust CR1 on the AIRIS II Z-axis gradient,
you must adjust both 321 and 322VR.

TIP 2: As you are adjusting the time constants from right to left, you should see the
flatness of the waveform begin expanding from right to left. During the course of your
adjustments, when the VRs you are adjusting lose their effectiveness or begin to
adversely effect the flatness of the waveform (e.g., humps begin to appear), move to the
next set of VRs. If you get stuck, do not hesitate to turn all of the VRs counter-clockwise
as far as they can go and start the VR adjustments over.

NOTE: Do not proceed to step 32 until the flatness of the channel 2 signal is < 5 mV.

32. Use the vertical position control on the oscilloscope to position the channel 1
signal at 0 VDC.

33. Use the Level control on the integrator to position the top of the channel 2 signal
at 0 VDC.

Your oscilloscope display should now appear as shown in Fig B:

Note: When you have the oscilloscope properly adjusted, Channel 1 is sitting right on top
of channel 2. Fig A shows what this looks like in theory. Fig B shows what this looks like
in reality.

Note: It is very important that you line up the rising edge of channels 1 and 2 as shown in
Fig A and Fig B. Doing this will minimize the amount of horizontal adjustment on the
oscilloscope required to obtain the necessary views later in the rise time adjustment
portion of this procedure.

The following figures show examples of how the rise time will likely appear after the
flatness of the channel 2 signal is < 5 mV. Fig. A shows an example of what rise time
should look like when eddy currents are effectively compensated for. The rise time in
Fig. A is ~ 1.5 msec (1500 microsec). Fig. B shows an example of what rise time can
look like when eddy currents are not effectively compensated for. The rise time in Fig. B
is ~1.75 msec (1750 microsec):

Note: You may have to use the horizontal position control on the oscilloscope to get the
channel 1 and channel 2 signals centered on the oscilloscope as shown in Fig. A and B.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT touch the channel 1 vertical control on the oscilloscope or

the Level control on the integrator to adjust these displays. These controls must
remain in the positions they were set in during steps 32 and 33. If you accidentally
move these controls, you have to go back to step 32 and start the procedure again
from that point.

Fig. A Fig. B

35. If the rise time is not within specification, change the sweep on the oscilloscope to
50 msec (the flatness view) and adjust the VRs. Focus on the very left part of the
curve.

NOTE: You cannot adjust VRs when viewing rise time (sweep set to 500
microsec) because your adjusting perspective is distorted at this sweep setting. If

22
HITACHI Medical Systems America Inc. MRP 5000, MRP 7000, AIRIS and AIRIS II Systems

you attempt to adjust VRs at 500 microsec, you will move your flatness out of
specification.

36. After adjusting the VRs with the sweep set to 50 msec, set the sweep back to 500
microsec to view their effect on rise time.

37. Repeat steps 35 and 36 until the rise time is <= 1.5 msec (1500 microsec).

Procedure B: External Magnetic Interference and Vibration Disturbances

Adjustment (Home)

1. Position the JB1 test fixture in the bore of the magnet as shown in steps 1-3 of
Procedure A: Eddy current adjustment. Be sure to remove the cover on the bottom
magnet to ensure that any detected vibration is from the magnet itself and not the
cover.

2. Plug the integrator and the oscilloscope into the same 115 VAC room outlet.

3. Using coaxial cables, connect AC OUT on the integrator to Channel 1 on the

oscilloscope.

4. Connect one end of a coaxial cable into the BNC connector on the JB1 test fixture
labeled “B0”. Connect the other end to the rear panel of the integrator.

5. Turn the MRI system off (including the heaters) to reduce spurious noise.

6. Ground isolate the oscilloscope.

7. Set the oscilloscope controls as follows:

Part Number: L0E-BMA115-1 September 6, 2000

8. Observe the CHA1 signal and determine if there is any significant EMI or vibration
disturbances.

• EMI: Signals are continuous and generally appear at a frequency of 60 Hz as

shown in the following figure:

Specification: All EMI signals < 50 mV.

• Vibration Disturbances: Signals dampen with time, as shown in the following

figure:

Specification: All vibration disturbance signals < 50 mV.

See the examples on the next page for additional information about EMI and
vibration waveforms.

9. If you observe a vibration signal higher than 50 mV, determine the source of the
disturbance and attempt to remove it. If you cannot remove the disturbance, vibration-
absorbing donuts can be placed under the system to isolate the system. Contact
technical support for more information.

28
HITACHI Medical Systems America Inc. MRP 5000, MRP 7000, AIRIS and AIRIS II Systems
Part Number: L0E-BMA115-1 September 6, 2000

10. If you observe an EMI signal higher than 50 mV, verify that the signal is true EMI
interference and not a problem with the system by completing the following steps:

a) Remove the end of the coaxial cable attached to the JB1 test fixture and attach a
BNC short to it.
b) Observe the oscilloscope display. If the signal you were viewing disappears, it is
EMI. Determine the source of the disturbance and attempt to remove it. If you
cannot remove the disturbance, a magnetic field compensator must be used to
offset the interference. Contact technical support for more information.
c) If the signal is still present, there is a problem with the setup. Check all of your
cable and connections and repeat the procedure. If problems with the setup
persist, contact technical support.

Vibration Waveform Explanation

The vibration example waveform demonstrates an impact stimulus to an AIRIS II system.

An impact stimulus like this might be a city bus striking a pot-hole with the front wheels
then the back wheels 1.8 seconds later. In this example waveform, note the following:
• The frequency of the disturbance is approx. 10 Hz and dampens to noise level in
approx. 1 sec. This represents a classic vibration impact stimulus.
• A vibration signal higher than 30 millivolts could be seen as ghosting while imaging,
especially if impacted in the middle of scan acquisition.
• Vibration testing is best performed during peak disturbance periods. Jumping near the
magnet or within 10 to 15 feet from the system will probably cause vibration ghosting

29

Part Number: L0E-BMA115-1 September 6, 2000

on a good system. Hard stepping or bouncing on the balls of your feet outside the
shielded room should not cause a disturbance to the magnet.
• If the vibration disturbance is caused by air handling equipment, the vibration signal
will be fairly consistent amplitude with a frequency of 9 to 12 Hz.
• When testing vibration with large magnetic fluctuations from subways etc., it may be
necessary to ac couple the digital storage scope since the signal will be modulated
by these large low frequency disturbances.

Remember; vibration signals from the AIRIS system have a resonant frequency of 9
to 12 Hz. This is very important to separate magnetic fluctuations from vibration
anomalies.

External Magnetic Interference Waveform Explanation

The external magnetic interference example waveform demonstrates an overhead power

line directly behind the magnet within 30 ft caused the AC magnetic fluctuation. In this
example, note the following:
• The frequency of the magnetic fluctuation is approx. 60 Hz with an amplitude of 200
millivolts (50millivolts/milligauss) or 4 milligauss. The 60 Hz magnetic fluctuation
has modulation component of approx. 15 Hz and 75 millivolts amplitude or 1.5
milligauss.
• Any signal over 50 millivolts will cause replication or image ghosting.
• This signal may be used to adjust the magnet fluctuation compensator in place of the
large search coil.

Eddy Currents

The following table outlines the major issues associated with eddy currents that will
facilitate your troubleshooting in this area:

Eddy Current Issues Description

Systems Effected All—MRP 5000, MRP 7000, AIRIS, and AIRIS II
Cause Current running through the gradient coils induces eddy
currents in the surrounding metal of the gantry. The eddy
currents in turn generate magnetic fields, which ultimately
distort the static magnetic field by distorting the magnetic field
pulses generated by the gradient coils, as shown in the
following figure:

Gradient’s DC Current Resulting Gradient

Pulse (A) Magnetic Field Pulse (mG)

No eddy current
compensation

Times when you need If compensated for properly, generally only during installation
to address them and when you replace the GC control board.
Symptoms Ringing and shading artifacts. In some cases, total loss of
signal is possible.

Note: Eddy currents cannot be removed, but they can be compensated for. Because the
gradient magnetic field pulses will be distorted by the magnetic field created by the eddy
currents, the trick is to adjust the shape of the gradient magnetic field pulses so that after
they are affected by the eddy currents, they have the desired shape. This is done by
adjusting the wave shape of the DC pulses that drive the gradient coils, as shown in the
following figure:

External Magnetic Interference (Home)

The following table outlines the major issues associated with AC external magnetic
interference that will facilitate your troubleshooting in this area:

External Magnetic Description

Interference Issues
Systems Effected MRP 5000, MRP 7000, AIRIS, and AIRIS II
Cause AC sources (e.g., overhead power lines, transformers,
televisions, and electric blankets).
Times when you need Always check for EMI during installation, and whenever the

Symptoms Image ghosting, replication, and slice alignment errors.

Note: If the source of the external magnetic interference cannot be removed, a magnetic
field compensator must be used to offset the interference. A magnetic field compensator
consists of a coil placed in the ceiling above the MRI system and a field compensation
unit that powers the coil. The idea is to have the compensator coil create a magnetic field
that cancels out the effects of the external magnetic interference.

Adjusting the Longitudinal Photo-Sensors on the

Patient Table

• Procedure Goal
• Background
• Location of Longitudinal Photo-Sensors
• Photo-Sensor Reflector Mechanism
• Required Tools
• Detailed Procedure
• Condensed Procedure

Procedure Goal (Home)

The goal of this procedure is to adjust the longitudinal photo-sensors on the patient table
so that their detection thresholds are set between their maximum and minimum detection
positions. This is necessary because if a photo-sensor’s threshold is set too low, the
photo-sensor may fail to detect the table. If a photo-sensor’s threshold is set too high, the
photo-sensor may produce false signals.

Background (Home)

The patient table moves up and down (vertically), side to side (laterally), and in and out
(longitudinally). A combination of limit switches and photo-sensors is used to determine
its position.

There are eight (8) photo-sensors on the patient table (1PMS, 2PMS, 3PMS, 4PMS,
5PMS, 6PMS, 7PMS, and 8PMS). 5PMS and 6PMS are used to determine the lateral
position of the table and are not adjustable. 1PMS, 2PMS, 3PMS, 4PMS, 7PMS, and
8PMS are used to determine longitudinal position of the table and are adjustable.

The purpose of each of the longitudinal photo-sensors is as follows:

• 1PMS and 2PMS: Used to detect the longitudinal position of the table at/near the
foremost end of the unit. 2PMS detects when the table is at its foremost longitudinal
position. 1PMS detects when the table is 100mm away from its foremost longitudinal
position. When 1PMS detects the table, the system limits the speed of the table to
20mm/sec to prevent hard impacts.

• 3 PMS and 4PMS: Used to detect the longitudinal position of the table at/near the rear
of the unit. 4PMS detects when the table is at its rearmost position. 3PMS detects
when the table is 150mm away from its rearmost position. When 3PMS detects the
table, the system limits the speed of the table to 20mm/sec to prevent hard impacts.

• 7PMS: Used to determine when lateral table motion is permitted. Lateral table motion
is permitted as long as the table is within 300 mm of its rearmost position.

• 8PMS: Used to determine the absolute longitudinal position of the table. This is a
momentary measurement. 8PMS is set momentarily when the table is 60mm from its
rearmost position.

Photo-Sensor Reflector Mechanism (Home)

There are three distinct reflector mechanisms associated with the photo-sensors on the
table:

• Photo-sensors 1PMS, 2PMS, 3PMS, and 4PMS detect the presence of the table when
the short perpendicular plate attached underneath the table breaks their beam.

• Photo-sensor 7PMS detects the presence of the table when the long thin reflective
plate attached to the bottom of the table breaks its beam.

• Photo-sensor 8PMS momentarily detects the presence of the table when the short
elbow attached to the end of the long thin reflective plate that 7PMS detects breaks its
beam.

The following figure shows the location of these reflective devices. (Note: This shot is
taken looking up from the ground beneath the table):

Operating the HOBO RH/Temp Data Logger

• Procedure Goal
• Specifications
• Background
• Required Items
• Data Collection Procedure
• Data Analysis Procedure

Procedure Goal (Home)

The goal of this procedure is to collect reliable relative humidity and temperature data in
magnet rooms using the HOBO RH/Temp data logger to determine whether or not these
variables are within specification.

Specifications (Home)

The following temperature and relative humidity specifications apply to AIRIS and
AIRIS II systems:
• The temperature in the scan room must be maintained between 70o and 80 o F.
• The maximum allowable temperature change in the scan room is +/- 3 o F per hour.
• The relative humidity in the scan room must be maintained between 45% and 80%.

Background (Home)

The most common temperature-related problems experienced in the field concern the rate
of temperature change in the scan room. Temperature changes in the scan room that
exceed +/- 3 o F per hour result in a decrease in the quality of images produced by the
MRI system. This is because the system’s internal heating mechanism designed to
maintain the magnet temperature to within 0.1o C can not keep up with temperature
changes that exceed +/- 3 o F per hour. When temperature movements at these rates occur,
cold spots develop in the magnet, which adversely effect the static homogeneity of the
magnet and thus image quality.

Problems in MRI systems caused by relative humidity are relatively rare; however, the
following issues can be raised when the relative humidity is out of specification:
• If the relative humidity falls below 45%, the risk of static shock increases.
• If the relative humidity rises above 80%, the risk of shorts occurring due to
condensation increases.

Installing and Adjusting the EPI Head Restraint

• Procedure Goal
• Background
• Components
• Installation
• Adjustment

Procedure Goal (Home)

The goal of this procedure is to properly install and adjust the EPI head restraint.

Background (Home)

EPI measurement requires the patient to be very still. When imaging the head, this is
particularly critical, as even minor movements will adversely affect the EPI measurement
quality. Therefore, a special EPI head restraint has been created for use with the head
coil. The head restraint is designed to stabilize and prevent movement of the patient’s
head.

1
HITACHI Medical Systems America Inc. AIRIS II Systems
Part Number: L2E-BMA117-1 October 11, 2000

Installing and Troubleshooting the Echo-Planar

Imaging (EPI) Software Option -- Version 4.2P
• Procedure Goal
• Background
• Required Tools
• Pre-Installation Checklist
• Installation
• Troubleshooting

! NOTICE

The quality of the images produced by the EPI software option is

highly dependant on the following items:
• ∆V < 5 mV; Rise
Eddy currents: Must be within specification (∆
Time ≤ 1.5 msec).
• Slew Rates: Must be adjusted properly.
• Shim: All terms must be within specification and geometrical
distortion must be 90o ± 2 o
• Compensator: Must be adjusted properly
• Transmitter: Must have no reflected power
• Gating: Must be fully operational

! NOTICE

The characteristic matrix must be re-measured whenever:

• Work is done that alters the GC waveform in any way (e.g.,
eddy currents or shim are adjusted).
• Images produced from the EPI option software exhibit poor
quality.
Measuring the characteristic matrix is described in the
“Installation” section of this procedure.

1
HITACHI Medical Systems America Inc. AIRIS II System Procedure
Part Number: L2E-BMA121-4 February 16, 2001

Procedure Goal (Home)

The goal of this procedure is to install, adjust, and troubleshoot the AIRIS II EPI software
option. The EPI software option is available in system versions V4.1B and up.

Background (Home)

The EPI option software consists of two scanning

sequences:

• Spin Echo EPI (SE-EPI): An extremely fast spin

echo sequence. SE-EPI sequences produce T1,
T2, and proton density weighted images just like
regular spin echo sequences; they just do it
much faster (see Figure 1).

Example: A spin echo sequence that takes 10

minutes to complete might take an SE-EPI
sequence 2 seconds to complete. Figure 1

• Diffusion Weighted EPI (DW-EPI): An SE-EPI

sequence with two additional gradients (one
added before and one after the 180 degree
pulse). The purpose of these two additional
gradients is to reduce signal intensity caused by
hydrogen molecular motion (e.g. diffusion).

Since normal healthy tissue has diffusion taking

place, healthy tissue appears dark in DW-EPI.
Since dead tissue does not have diffusion taking
place, it appears bright in DW-EPI (see Figure
2).

Troubleshooting (Home)

If EPI image quality is not acceptable, do the following:

• Verify that Eddy currents are within specification.

• Verify that the slew rates are adjusted properly.

• Verify that the shim is within specification.

• Verify that the compensator is adjusted properly.

• Verify that the transmitter has no reflected power.

• Verify that gating is fully operational.

• If any changes have been made to the system that have resulted in the alteration of the
GC waveform (e.g., Eddy currents or shim are adjusted), re-measure the characteristic
matrix.

The purpose of the FatSep software option is to enable users to obtain an image for water
and an image for fat separately. Adjusting the software during installation consists of
getting the differences between the FOV’s of water and fat images to be within 1mm of
each other. This procedure does not deal with adjusting the FOV’s themselves.

NOTE: This procedure will be much easier to perform if you ensure that the system’s
FOV’s are adjusted properly before you start.

Required Tools (Home)

• FatSep system option software

• Head QD coil
• FOV phantom
• No. 3 phantom
• FatSep Excel spreadsheet
• Laptop computer

PRECAUTIONS
PRECAUTIONS

• Do not transmit with the analyzer connected to the

system, even with the receiver coil outside the magnet it
is possible for enough energy coupling to damage the
analyzer!
• Do not image with the analyzer powered on. The
instrument will generate enough signals to produce
artifacts.
• Use the analyzer with supplied power supply only.
Batteries are not recommended because of the high
magnetic field. The instrument may be used inside the
magnet without batteries.
• The analyzer was designed for calibration and
troubleshooting of the receiver coils, it may also be used
to check and troubleshoot the transmitter coil, and it
should not be used for the initial calibration of the
AIRIS transmitter coils. The power of this analyzer
was limited to –16db to accommodate passive de-
coupled coils, limiting the measurement accuracy with
50-ohm circuits. After the AIRIS transmitter is tuned
with the HP 4193 then check and record your impedance
curve findings with the Handheld Analyzer for future
tuning reference.
• For the best accuracy, always check the calibration of
your test cables and adapters at the MRI system’s
center frequency.
