UNDERSTANDING THE STORY BEHIND NESTLE THE BABY FORMULA AND BOYCOTT

During decades ,nestle was boycotted all over the world the reason was its aggressive
advertising campaign of the bottle feeding in developing countries it leads to death of infants .the baby
formula was invented in 1867 and was widely popular in western countries ,but in 1960s the formula went
down nestle companies went down and south America they’ve sent representatives in nurse uniforms to
hospitals and nurses of young mothers .the promoters gave sample s for free ,and instructed woman on
how to prepare the product they also gave presents to doctors and expected that the doctors would
advise to use it .instead of breast feeding but once a woman stop breastfeeding her milk dries up so they
become dependent on formula and its price was too high so the woman began to water down the milk
which lower its nutritional value ,some of them added three times more water than its suggested. And
only one in four woman mixed the milk it’s recommended. The other problem was lock of clean water and
most of woman took the water from the rivers to mix the formula so their children gets diarrhea which
could lead to death. And also in poor families, the bottles were not sterilized. Nestle and baby formula
companies used the confidential tricks and some of the mothers were convinced that they were not able
to produce milk that would be good enough for their babies .at that time scientist s found that
breastfeeding was healthier for infants .after the investigation was conducted , a boycott against nestle
had started over 20 countries had join the boycott since 1997 the goal was to make nestle stop promoting
infant formulas in developing countries it harmed nestle reputation the boycott was over in 1984 but
started in the late 80safter that nestle adopted new rules of advertising but social rights group claims
that such companies continue violates the rules. And today the representatives still visit hospitals to push
the milk formula.
CHILD LABOR, ABUSE AND TRAFFICKING

The dark side of chocolate brought attention to purchases of cocoa beans from Ivorian plantations
of cocoa they use the child slave labor they use children 12 -15 years’ old to harvest cocoa the
international labor rights fund failed a lawsuit against nestle. On behalf of three Malian children the suit
alleged the children were trafficked to coted Ivor, forced into slavery, experienced frequent beatings on
cocoas plantation.

HEALTH THREATS

In July 2009 the food and drug administration (FDA) and centers for Decease

s control and prevention (CDC) warned costumers to avoid eating any varieties of prepackaged nestle toll
house refrigerated cookie dough due to risk of contamination and caused illness and sickness to those
person who eats this .more than 30 states ,half of whom required hospitalization in particular, one woman
had fatal infection before the batch was reclaimed

Chinese scandal milk

Six infants were killed and 800 were hospitalizes with kidney problems after nestle product were
contaminated with melamine, a substance sometimes illegally added to food products to increase their
apparent protein content.

Recommendation

I highly recommend that they should not use nestle product to their babies to assure the safety of their
children and to the person who used it and to all parents you should not put your families into risk

Conclusion

I conclude that we cannot close nestle easily .because they are big companies but they cannot erase their
reputation that they almost kill children of their product all they want to do is make sure that their product
is healthy and will not cause illness and leads to death.
