The Concept of Physical Self in Psychology

Topic/Lesson

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

a. The Sigmund Freud’s construction of self and personality
b. The complexity of the Physical Self
c. The Exposition of Analytical Psychology of Carl Gustav

2. Insights (What new insights or learnings did you gain in discussion/ activity?)

i. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that the body of ours is
a source where our personality gets its growth and sensation However, reading the
article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that our body is subservient unto
our mind and is much more than feeling an ordinary sensation because according to
William James that as not to banish ordinary sensations, we have to feel something
more deeply like the severest pain like for the soldiers who suffer severe wounds but
have not yet notice them until the intensity of the fighting abates. So, for him body is
an expressive tool of indwelling consciousness and good physical health is something
that wells up from every part of the body of a well-trained human being. In addition,
our body is also something we have to focus on because here we get to get the
element of spiritual hygiene of supreme significance.

ii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that we as humans do
not really think and analyze the role of our body for self-actualization and that the
weak humans does not have it However, reading the article/understanding the lesson,
I now think/realize that once the physiological needs of a person are met, the
individual becomes more concerned with the higher order need and that is according
to Maslow’s Need-Hierarchy theory. That ascetism, self-denial, rejections bring self-
actualization only to strong individuals.

iii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that the physical self is
not that important to put effort and understanding on, because I think physical self is
just what I think it is. However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now
think/realize that there is more to physical self than to what I have known. It has
different traditions that connects with the physical self that gives it importance, like
for example the eastern traditions where they practice yoga because they see this as a
source of desires and attachment that needed appreciation and it is also a serve as
main vehicular spiritual growth and self-realization for the self. In short, this yoga
practice makes you have discipline not only to your physical body, but it also trains
your mind and changes your lifestyle based on how you discipline and control
yourself.

3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you want more
explanations about?
i. Why do we have to give so much importance on self-actualization?
ii. Why are there traditions that is only made for the growth of our physical self,
does it really need that much focus and care on?
iii. Why do only the strong individuals have self-actualization, but not the weak ones?
