INTRODUCTION

Introduction
ADDICTION
“The state of being enslaved to habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or
physically habit-forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma.”

Addiction is basically a mental disorder, in which, when someone is doing an activity or using a
substance over a prolonged period, his/her mind become habitual of that act or thing (that he/she
consumes) and ultimately his/her body. This thing results in a state in which a man feels
uncomfortable without it and he strive hard to continue his/her act.

DRUG1
"A drug is any substance (other than food that provides nutritional support) that, when inhaled,
injected, smoked, consumed, absorbed via a patch on the skin, or dissolved under the tongue causes
a temporary physiological (and often psychological) change in the body."

TYPES OF DRUGS
➢ Pharmaceutical Drug
"A pharmaceutical drug (also referred to as medicine, medication, or simply as drug) is a drug used
to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent disease."

Their common name is ‘medicine’, which are used by patient (suffered from some physiological
disease) to increase the immunity of their body against diseases.

➢ Addictive drugs
“Addictive drugs are drugs which have limitations on their ownership or use by a government, and
are illegal in certain situations (meaning a person is not allowed to have them).”

These are also medicine, in some cases, but due to their repetitive use they become addictive. While
many of addictive disease are used by man for a long time, to increase their mental strength to gain
confidence for different matters of life.

DRUG ADDICTION
A process in which someone use addictive drugs, to fulfill his/her need of addiction.

NGO REPORT
In October 2016, an NGO reported that about 53% of the students in leading private school chains
are addicted to various kinds of drugs in Islamabad. Since these private schools ask for huge sums
as fees, most of the students belong to wealthy backgrounds and affordability is not an issue.

CAUSES OF DRUG ADDICTION

Causes of Drug Addiction

There are many causes of drug addiction in students, but some are easy to pick out long before
substance abuse even begins.

Why are some students able to resist drugs even when those around them abuse, while others seek
out drugs even if they are not readily available?

Scientist evaluating drug use and abuse have come up with some interesting observations.

Drug addiction is an overwhelming, uncontrollable need for drugs or alcohol despite the negative
consequences that may follow.

Obviously, the primary cause of drug abuse is use of drugs, but the predictors that seem to make
certain students more susceptible to drug addiction are as follows:

PEER PRESSURE
A come motive for first time drug and alcohol use is peer pressure. Peer pressure is defined as
influence from members of one's peer group. Peers are the people who are a part of the same group
you are, whether that's age, gender or education.

Peer pressure often triggers

an emotional reaction in
people, which in turn makes
them more likely to
succumb to the pressure
and can be a factor in teen
drinking or drug abuse.
Your teen may likely to fall
victim to peer pressure if
they feel:

✓ Sad
✓ Guilty Figure 3: Peer Pressure is one the major cause
✓ Uncool
✓ Anxious

CURIOSITY & URGE TO EXPERIMENT

Students may want to experience a "high" or
want to know how it feels. This could be the
starting of drug addiction.

Page 11
CAUSES OF DRUG ADDICTION

POOR FAMILY ENVIRONMENT

Students from broken homes or with
poor parent-child bonds are more
likely to use drugs.

Figure 4: Poor parent-child bond may lead to drug

addiction

DEPRESSION
Those students who suffer from depression or feelings of loneliness may become addicted to drugs,
as drugs may reduce the emotional pain they feel.

While drug is only a short-term fix for such a long-term problem but the person fails to see it as
such.

Figure 5: Depression in students may lead to drug addiction

Page 12

PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEMS
Students with psychological problems are more
susceptible to drug addiction than mentally healthy
ones.

Figure 6: Students with psychological problem

are more likely to become drug addiction.

LACK OF PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT

Students that are left unsupervised are at an increased risk for drug addiction versus those whose
parents are fully active in their lives.

That may be due to the feeling of complete freedom that they full advantage of, or may be due to
feeling of neglected and unloved by parents.

USE BY PARENTS
If parents use drugs, their children are more likely to use drugs, even if the parents say not to.

Figure 7: If parents are drug addicts, children are more likely to become drug addicts

Page 13
CAUSES OF DRUG ADDICTION

FASHION
One of the major reason of drug addition in drug addiction
in students is Fashion. Now a days use of drugs has become
a Fashion. According to our survey 33% of students use
drugs because of Fashion.

Figure 8: Drug adddiction has

become a fashion

ANXIETY
Anxiety disorders are highly treatable, only about one-third of people with these conditions ever
receive medical treatment. Instead, they may choose to numb their anxiety to get through the day,
and to try to get more or better sleep, by drinking alcohol, smoking and/or taking prescription
and/or illicit drugs.

Overall, researchers estimate that 20% of people with an anxiety disorder also are addicted to
alcohol or other drugs.

Figure 9: Anxiety may cause drug addiction

Page 14

FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES
These causes great stress in the mind. Drugs are a route to escapism.

Figure 10: Poor financial condition may cause drug addiction

POOR SELF ESTEEM

Those who have low self-esteem struggle to find success and happiness, mostly because they do not
feel themselves worthy of enjoying such things. Their lack of self-worth will affect every area of their
life. This leads to depression and probably consequent drug abuse.

Page 15
EFFECTS OF DRUG ADDICTION ON STUDENTS

Effects of Drug Addiction on Students

Consequences of addiction include brain abnormalities, slowed thinking and impaired learning and
memory. It can also deplete the brain of certain chemicals like dopamine and serotonin, sending
students into a prolonged depression and leaving them susceptible for more destructive behaviors.
Alcohol abuse in students impacts the brain just as hard as other drugs. Memory problems and
other life-long brain issues are common in students who drink excessively.

EDUCATIONAL INEFFICIENCY
Drug addiction in students adversely affects
their academic efficiency as drugs cause:

➢ Mental and cognitive impairments

➢ Decrease in learning abilities
➢ Defects in verbal and visual memory
➢ Carelessness towards attitude
➢ Skipping of classes eventually low
grades
➢ Reduced concentration & memory
attention

Young adults seem to have more trouble in

learning than older adults, so students are affected most.

HEALTH PROBLEMS
Drugs abuse have negative impacts on both physical and mental health leading

"co-occurring mental health disorders" whose prolonged use can have fatal consequences.

➢ Irregular heartbeat
➢ Weakened immune system
➢ Rapid weight loss
➢ increased rates of cancer
➢ Insomnia
➢ Fertility complications

Page 16
EFFECTS OF DRUG ADDICTION ON STUDENTS

BEHAVIOR ALTERATIONS
Addicted students face irregular behavior complications, often experience mood swings. Some are
enlisted below:

➢ Impulsiveness
➢ Aggression
➢ Hallucination
➢ Paranoia
➢ Confusion
➢ Loss of Self control
➢ Depression

ECONOMICAL ISSUES
Addiction can cause addicted individuals to
become desperate. Desperate enough to do
anything to get next fix. Addicts can resort to:

➢ Stealing
➢ Armed robbery
➢ Domestic violence
➢ Fighting

and other criminal activities.

PERSONALITY
The psychological side effects of drugs abuse can dramatically change an individual’s

personality

➢ may become secretive

➢ develop parazonia
➢ have lower self -esteem
➢ lack of trust on others
➢ lack of coordination

Page 17
EFFECTS OF DRUG ADDICTION ON SOCIETY

Effects of Drug Addiction on

Society
The drug addiction of students render long-lasting impacts on
society as others are also affected by addict’s irregular behavior,
criminal activities. Moreover, this creates unpleasant
environment for other students.

LOSING FAMILY:
The ratio of homeless children increases in the community as
due to drug abuse they often are subjected to violence, abuse as
well as money problems. Children in such environment are removed and placed in state custody and
its cost the state each year.

VIOLENCE:
Drug abuse makes you violent and often makes you unstable. Violent drug abusers can pose threat
and harm to the society or neighborhood they live in as their sudden outbursts of angers are
unpredictable.

FINANCIAL ISSUES:
Crime is attributed largely to drug abuse. Most of the addicts try to attain money for purchasing and
when a deal goes wrong or they are unable to attain money, they act out violently which is
dangerous. Half of the people who were arrested for serious crimes were under drug influence.
Society then must pick up the cost for court and law enforcement.

JOBS:
Drug abuse makes you lose your credibility and people lose jobs because of it which causes a stress
on the society as well because they lose workforce.

WHAT ISLAM SAYS ABOUT DRUGS?

What Islam says about drugs?

QURAN AND HADITH
The young Muslims of today are facing an ever-increasing number of dilemmas. One of these
is drugs. What does Islam have to say about it? How should Muslims regard drugs? To know
this, we must see what the Quran and the Sunnah (prophetic tradition) say regarding
intoxicants and narcotics.

Allah Almighty states in the Noble Quran

5:90

what means:

"O You who believe! Indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other
than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that
you may be successful."[Quran: 5:90]

Allah Almighty has described using intoxicants, amongst other things, as being appalling,
despicable and hateful acts of Satan, and He has commanded us to abstain from them. Allah,
thereafter, states in the next verse,

5:91

Page 19
WHAT ISLAM SAYS ABOUT DRUGS?

that which means:

"Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and
gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not
desist?[Quran: 5:91]

This Aayah (verse) tells us how it is a detestable act of Satan, because intoxicants, in addition
to sowing the seeds of enmity, prevent one from the remembrance of Allah.

Bear in mind that when the term intoxicant is used, it also encompasses narcotics, because
they too, among other things, result in the loss of self-control. There are also many narrations

stated by the Noble Prophet (may Allah exalt his mention) with regards to intoxicants,
such as:

➢ Ibn 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of

Allah said: "Every intoxicant is Khamr (wine) and every intoxicant is Haraam
(unlawful). Whosoever drinks wine in this world and dies whilst having consumed it
and not having repented from it will not drink it in the next world [i.e.
in Paradise]." [Muslim]
➢ Jaabir, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Messenger of

Allah said: "Whatever intoxicates in a greater quantity is also unlawful in a small

quantity." [At-Tirmithi, Abu Daawood & Ibn Maajah]
➢ Ibn 'Abbaas, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of

Allah said: "If a habitual drunkard dies, he will meet Allah like the one who
worships idols." [Ahmad & Ibn Maajah]

In other narrations, Prophet Muhammad described intoxicants as:

1. The key to all evils.

2. The head of all errors and lapses.

3. The most terrible of major sins.

4. The mother of all atrocities.

5. The mother of all evils.

Page 20
WHAT ISLAM SAYS ABOUT DRUGS?

WHAT IS THE LEGAL PUNISHMENT FOR CONSUMING DRUGS?

Imaam Al-Maawardi stressed that by consuming plants, which cause over-excitement

(intoxication), the Hadd (legal punishment) will become necessary, which, in this case, is
eighty lashes.

Imaam Qiraafi states that all the scholars of his period agreed that its consumption is
Haraam.

However, there is a difference of opinion as to what punishment becomes incumbent due to

consuming drugs; either Hadd, because it intoxicates or Ta'zeer (reprimand) because it
corrupts the mind.

According to three prominent Imaams (Shaafi'i, Maalik and Ahmad), consuming anything
intoxicating, however small the amount, will bring the legal punishment of eighty lashes to
the person. However, according to the Hanafi school, if an intoxicating amount has been
taken, then, according to Imam Muhammad, Hadd will be necessary. According to Imaam
Abu Haneefah and Imaam Abu Yusuf, he will be reprimanded severely, but the Hadd will not
be imposed.

Ta'zeer is such a punishment that holds no specific amount and is for the discretion of the
Judge. We should note that according to some scholars, in certain cases, Ta'zeer could prove
to be more severe than the Hadd itself, such as when the person persistently commits the
crime.

GOVERNMENT STEPS

Government Steps
GOVERNMENT OF PAKISTAN is playing a vital rule in controlling the drug addiction in the future of
Pakistan. Many laws and institutes are developed to control this disease.

➢ Many NGO’s work in this regard like in October 2016, an NGO report revealed that almost
53% student and young children at large school chain in Islamabad have been found to be
addicted to various kind of drugs ranging from soft to hard. Most of the children belong to
the elite or rich class where affordability is not an issue.
➢ The SENATE STANDING COMMITTE on interior narcotics control showed grave concern
over this report. The recent arrest of a gang leader, by security forces.
➢ ANTI-NARCOTICS FORCE (ANF), involved in suppling drugs to students in Islamabad is a
worth mentioning achievement to curb this menace.
➢ The SENATE STANDING COMMITTE declare a war on drug suppling gangs, which was
fully endorsed by the committee.
➢ It is a fact that AFGANISTAN on one hand suppling a large amount of drug in Pakistan
through PAK AFGAN boarder, so the government of Pakistan trying to control this supply.
➢ CCTV cameras are used in school, college and even university levels to take an eye on the
students during their study time.
➢ Government trying to reduce the publicity of cigarette companies on TV and in form of
posters in the whole country.
➢ Government also enforce the cigarette producing companies to reduce the most harmful
drug materials in producing the cigarette.
➢ Government is trying to ban that places from where the drug is supply to the students and
where the students go for using drugs like smoking corners, sheesha point etc.
➢ Students are invited in many seminars for producing awareness in the students by many
NGO’s.
➢ Selling Tobacco to under 18 is banned by Government of Pakistan.
➢ Cigarette can only be sold on packing.

Page 22
GOVERNMENT STEPS

FINES AND LAWS

➢ According to the government of Pakistan, there will be 2 crores and 50 lacs fines 10-year
lock for the drug dealers who sale drug without checking and license.
➢ There will be 5 lacs fine and 5 years of lock for those who are helping in supplying and
selling the illegal drugs in Pakistan.

OTHER INSTITUTES FOR CONTROLLING DRUG ADDICTION

There are many NGO’s and institutes in Pakistan which work for controlling the drug
addiction in students and other affected people.

➢ DRUG FREE PAKISTAN FOUNDATION

➢ NEW HORIZON CARE CENTER
➢ TEEN CHELLENGE PAKISTAN
➢ FRIEND OF ANTI-NORCOTICS OF SINDH(FANOS)
➢ RAY OF HOPE
➢ ANTI-NORCOTICS FORCE(ANF)
➢ WARIS FOUNDATION
➢ DOST FOUNDATION

Page 23
RECOMMENDATIONS

Recommendations
➢ Awareness and prevention of drug use are the key to fight the menace of harmful drugs.
➢ We should equip parents, teachers and families on early signs and symptoms of drug use at
home, schools and among friends.
➢ We should focus on the students in Pakistan to have access to information on drugs and the
consequences that most of them are not aware of.
➢ The theatre plays, video clips, documentaries and real story based films would certainly
influence those who are vulnerable to drugs, those who regularly use them and for the public
at large.
➢ The foremost objective should be to involve educational institutes as partners to fight drugs
use.
➢ We should guide the students not to try drugs in curiosity, as it may lead to addiction.
➢ We should include syllabus that educate students on drug use and its harmful effects on
health.
➢ Parents/Guardians must take a check on children.
➢ We, as students should try to keep ourselves and are friends as much away from drugs as
possible.

Conclusion
Conclusion is that drug addiction is not just an affliction for the addicts but the whole society is
effected from this. We should all try to eliminate this activity from our society. Everyone should play
his/her role to eliminate drug addiction. No one can eradicate this curse alone. Everyone must
cooperate with other people and institutes in order to make our society a “Drug-Free Society.”
