Playing Multiplication Games: An effective Strategy in Teaching Multiplication for Grade Two
SSES Learners in Barasoain Memorial Integrated School

Context and Rationale

Multiplication is one of the integral part of Mathematics Curriculum for

Grade 2. It is important for the learners to master multiplication skill so they can be able

to answer division facts, equations and problems too.

As a Grade 2- SSES adviser for almost 7 years, I have noticed that

most of my learners have difficulty in solving multiplication facts and problems. They

also believed that it is a very hard concept in Mathematics. It was reflected on the results

of my pupils’ pre-test on Project All Numerates ( Project AN) and Pre-test on Four

Fundamental Operations specifically in Multiplication.

As their teacher, I was fascinated to know what can I do to increase their

numeracy skill in multiplication. I strongly believed that I should integrate different

strategies in my lesson that will improve my pupils’ skill in multiplication. Since my

learners are in Grade two and they are very playful I have this idea to use games in

teaching multiplication. This will motivate them to learn. When learners are motivated

and engage in a task, learning is more likely to occur.

According to the Framework for Philippine Basic Education

(2011) presented by the Philippine Council of Mathematics Teachers

Educators (MATHTED, Inc. and the Science Institute of the

Department of Science and Technology, Mathematics from Kinder

to Grade 3 must manifest the following characteristics:

experimental and hands-on, informal, rich in basic and foundational

concepts and skills, and integrated. This fr amework recommends

that the instructions for these grades needs to be simple and

enjoyable through the use of games, manipulatives, informal

discussions and practical repetition and reasonable memorization.

Action Research Questions:

The main purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of

using games in teaching multiplication to Grade Two SSES learners in Barasoain

Memorial Integrated School.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. How will you describe the numeracy level of the learners in Project All Numerates and

four fundamental operations specifically in multiplication?

2. Is there a significant relationship between the numeracy level of the participants and

the teaching strategy used by the teacher?

3. What intervention strategies can be formulated in order to address the difficulties of the

participants in calculating multiplication facts and problems?

4. After applying the intervention strategies, to what extent of improvement in

multiplication did the pupils gain?

Hypothesis

The following are the null hypothesis formulated in the study being

conducted:

1. There is no significant relationship between the teaching strategy used in teaching

multiplication and the numeracy level of the learners.

2. Using games in teaching multiplication can improve the numeracy level of Grade 2

pupils.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant to the following stakeholders:

Learners - the study enables them to realize that multiplication is challenging

but enjoyable. This may serve as their guide to enhance and master their skill

in multiplication.

Teachers- the findings of this study can be of great help to teacher s looking

for effective strategies to boost proficiency in multiplication. They can

incorporate the use of games to teach, motivate and engage pupils in the

activity.

Parents/ guardians – this study will help them to do follow-up activities at

home with their child where they can bond and learn at the same time.

SSES Learners in Barasoain Memorial Integrated School

School Administrator- their insight gained from this study can serve as guide

for their future programs and interventions that intend to increase

multiplication skills of the learners.

Scope and Limitations:

This study focused on the effectiveness of using games in teaching

Mathematics for Grade 2-SSES learners in Barasoain Memorial Integrated

School, Mojon, City of Malolos during the Second Quarter of the school year

2019-2020.

A total of 23 learners from Grade 2- SSES were included as subject

of the study.

Because the research carried out in SSES where the average of 23

pupils and learners stay at school during the whole day, the major limitation

of the study is the generalization of its assumptions for other sections, where

the learners number in classroom is larger than 30 and Mathematics classes run

for 30 to 40 minutes.

Literature Review

Some related theories about using games in teaching

multiplication show various ways of understanding the learners and their

problems and basis for the solution for them. The following theories are

deemed relevant to the major concern of this study.

According to Laney Kennedy of Game-Based Learning ( 2019), using

games in teaching multiplication is a good strategy because it uses manipulatives for

pupils’ better understanding on materials and concept that will help learners to move from

concrete to abstract context.

Koran and McLaughlin (1990) compared the effectiveness of a

drill and practice math game fo r teaching basic multiplication facts. Students

who participated in the instruction were found equally effective, but the

students preferred the game. It only shows that children are really playful so

let us use this strategy for them be interested to learn.

From the Jenna D’Ettore’s citation on Mastering the

Multiplication Facts 2009 she cited that multiplication must be taught in fun

and practical way by creating interactive games to help students learn

multiplication Gopal, N. & Krupp, R (2003).

These studies support the researcher’s aim to use games in

teaching Multiplication effectively.

Type of Research

The researcher used an Experimental research design by using

games in teaching multiplication.

Respondents and Sampling Method

Learners from Grade 2- SSES that consists of 23 pupils are to be

used as subject of the study. The class will be divided into two groups:11

learners will be in the control group and 12 learners wi ll be in the experimental

group. The researcher used randomization in assigning the respondents for

control and experimental groups. The participants in this study differed in

terms of their mathematical abilities.

Proposed Innovation/ Intervention/ Strategy

The researcher formulated the following games as innovation.

Games formulated to improve pupils’ numeracy level in multiplication include:

a. solo game

b. collaborative game

c. board game

d. flash cards game

e. manipulative game

Game 1- (Solo Game ) “ Flower Making Game”

Objective: Multiply 1- to 2 digit numbers by 1-digit number with and without

regrouping

Mechanics of the Game:

a. Each pupil will be given a set of petals. Each petal has multiplication facts that they

need to answer.

b. After writing the answer they will arrange the petals and form a flower.

c. The first pupil to finish will be the winner.

Mechanics of the game:

a. The participants will be grouped into 2 groups.

b. Each group will be given a set of pictures of objects with multiplication facts.

c. They will answer the multiplication facts with time limit.

d. They will line up all the objects after answering the multiplication facts.

e. The teacher will check the answer.

f. The group with longest line with correct answers will be the winner.

Game 3 - (Board Game) –“ Factor Puzzle”

Objective: Give the factors of a given number

No of Players: 2

Instruments:

This research relied heavily on the achievement tests results after conducting

the intervention strategy formulated by the researcher and validated by 3 experts.

The researcher conducted a pre-test to know the numeracy skill of every

learners. The results were reflected on the worksheet. After the pre-test, the respondents

on the control group will be taught using traditional method while the experimental group

was given an intervention conducted by the researcher. After the traditional teaching and

conducting the intervention, the respondents will take again the same test to measure their

numeracy skills in multiplication. The results were reflected again on the worksheet for

post-test.

Intervention Strategies

I will use 2 teaching methods during the instructions of multiplication. These

are: conventional method and using games in teaching multiplication.

I will use 5 kinds of games to measure the improvement of the

participants in solving multiplication facts and problems.

The results will be recorded on a worksheet to be able to see the

difference between the results in conventional method and teaching

multiplication through the use of games.

Ethical Considerations

The participants of this study were given written permission from

their parents/ guardians and as well as the school in the conduct of this

research. The participants were willingly participated in the study after they

were approached by the researcher. Explanation about the purpose of the

conduct of this study has been done before doing the activity. But they may

withdraw themselves if they wish to do so.
