Guide Question/s Response/s

The five concepts that were taken up
How relevant and applicable were the course and comprehensively discussed –
contents in helping you enhance your Planning for a Safer School, Developing
competencies in successfully leading your Students as DRRM Champions, Managing
school to become more resilient and better the School During Disasters, Managing
prepared to face disasters. Temporary Learning Spaces, and
Ensuring Continuing Learning – were
carefully chosen by the crafters of the
learning modules so as to truly reflect
the actual situations and needs of its
participants.
In this regard, I firmly believe that the
short program was able to enhance my
competencies along Disaster Risk
Reduction and Mitigation, in no small
part due to the expert insights and
competent management of the learning
program by our Flexible Learning Tutor
and the able and timely assistance of the
Technical Support.
Because of all these, I feel that I have
greatly reduced my initial resistance to
the practice of DRRM and opened my
eyes further to the reality that disasters
and catastrophes can happen anytime,
anywhere and the best thing that I can
do as a school head and as the school
DRRM chairman is to practice alertness,
vigilance and preparedness for these
incidents. All these things will help me
and my small communities of learners,
teachers and stakeholders become more
ready and more resilient in the face of
disasters.

What significant learning insights did you gain One important insight that I have gained
from the course? from these online interactions is that the
task of preparing the school for these
eventualities is not the job solely of the
school head or the teachers. Everybody
in the community is involved – from the
parents, to local barangay officials, the
LGU, other agencies like the MSWD, the
police, and even private or non-
government organizations that can help
provide specialized post-disaster
services. Our job at the school level is to
identify these people and organizations
who can help the school, and organize
our efforts to maximize results. We
should seek their help before, during and
after emergencies and disasters without
hesitation for they are always more than
ready and willing to help.
What challenges or difficulties did you One of the challenges that I had
experience during the course? constantly met throughout the short
program was how to manage my time in
preparing for the online chat sessions
and coming up with the requirements,
since all of the latter required
coordinating with other people, either
from the school or from the community.
And also because of the voluminous
reading material contained in the
learning packages, I made it my resolve
to practice smart reading so that I would
achieve efficiency without sacrificing
effectiveness.
Additionally, because DRRM concepts
have not yet gained a strong foothold in
our school, some of the practices which I
had gleaned from other participants
opened my eyes to the reality that we

still have a very long way to go towards

operationalizing disaster risk reduction
and mitigation in the school.
What areas related to leading your school to Related to my previous response,
become more resilient and better prepared to organizing and operationalizing the
face disasters do you still need to improve on school disaster control group is
and why? something that I feel I have to address
immediately because it serves as the
very foundation for all the other aspects
of disaster management in the school.
Additionally, I would like to point out
that continuing education after a
disaster or emergency is a big challenge
for us, and is something that we also
have to consider as a priority concern.
Hands-on learning on how to build TLS
will also help us improve our
competencies along that line.
What are your other comments / suggestions To improve the program, maybe the
in order to improve the content coverage and implementers could consider extending
future course deliveries? the length of the course to allow
learners, who I assume are mostly time-
strapped school heads, to have the
opportunity to really prepare for the
online chat sessions and the course
requirements.
Also, the training providers may try
something like incorporating live online
face to face interactions to complement
the chat sessions.
On the whole, I found the modules to
be very user-friendly and highly
manageable for our stakeholders. The
text is mostly written in conversational
English, with activities that provoke
curiosity and develop critical thinking
among the course-takers.
