Midterms will partially cover the topics studied in class, subjects covered will be advised 2 weeks
before the exam date. The final exam will involve all topics covered in class.

All exams will be closed book, all equations and tables required to solve exam questions will be
provided.

Missing an exam or an assignment will result in a grade of zero unless there is a serious illness
validated by a medical report, a serious emergency or official university activity approved by
university administration.

HOMEWORK

Homework assignments will be given out on Monday to be handed in the following Monday before
the class meeting starts.

Late homework submissions will be accepted within 24 hours of the deadline with 20% deduction
of the assignment grade. No submissions will be accepted after 24 hours of the deadline.

Homework Submission - Standards

 The homework format described below is intended to familiarize you with the engineering
reports that are prepared in industry to share and archive information.

 A cover page should be included. Print the following information on the cover page of all
assignments:

CHME 204 - Thermodynamics I

Last Name, First Name
Date
Names of your collaborators if it is a group assignment.

 Use A4 size paper and only one side of the paper. Do not forget to number pages. Cover page
does not require a number.

 Footer should contain your initials and number

 Answers should be clearly written and leasable if printed by handwriting.

 Assignments should be stapled; loose papers, paper clips, etc. are not acceptable.

 Use standard abbreviation and engineering notation. Do not invent abbreviations.

 Leave a margin of 2.5 cm on the left-hand side.

 All straight lines are to be drawn with a ruler. Freehand curves and freehand straight lines
are not acceptable.

 If you think there may be an alternative solution, please include that too. No more than one
alternative answer to be included.

 Always use and keep track of units. Mistakes can frequently be identified through
inconsistencies in the units. All dimensional numerical answers must have units.

 All assumptions should be clearly listed.

 If used, references should be clearly listed in the following format:

Unit Operations of Chemical Engineering, 7th Edition, Int’l (2005). McCabe, Smith, Harriott.
McGraw Hill.

 References must contain enough information so that your referenced data could be easily
checked. Web references should contain a complete URL.

 Tables and figures should clearly be numbered and these numbers should be used when
tables/figures are referred in the text. Figure references should be printed below figures and
table references should be printed above tables.

 If the solution is graphical, use the appropriate graph axes, i.e., arithmetic, semi log, log log
to aid the reader in obtaining accurate data from the graph.

• Arrive on time
• Do not leave the class before the lecture ends – exceptions may apply, come and see
me before the class
• Silence is gold! No chatting

• Consumption of food is not allowed, except for water
• Filming and photography is only allowed with prior permission.
• HAVE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR LEARNING
Without taking away from the important role played by the teacher, it is helpful to
remember that what THE STUDENT does is actually more important in determining what is
learned than what the teacher does.

HOW TO SUCCEED:
• Attend Classroom Meetings:
Be present, 70% attendance is mandatory! Listen and Focus!
• Take notes and bring them to class, compare your notes with your peers’ notes.
• Revise your notes, note down parts you don’t understand. Try to find solutions using the
reference book or other recommended books. Research, you are a university student!
• Join in the discussion, learn and earn 5 extra points!
• Don’t give up! There will be revision classes, come with your questions!
