Adult Obesity in Canada

Obesity is a progressive disease characterized by accumulation of excessive or abnormal

amount of fat in the body. It is one of the major health problem that further gives rise to other

chronic diseases. Obesity is measured in terms of BMI, which is calculated using a person’s

height and weight. Thus, it can simply be understood as the condition where a person’s body

weight is higher than what is considered healthy for their height. It results from people

consuming more calories than their body burns. Many societal, cultural and economic conditions

contribute to the rise in obesity. The main reason of rampant increase in obesity is due to the

changing lifestyle of people in developed countries. The people in western culture are more

dependent on processed foods and sedentary lifestyle which contributes to the lack of

opportunities for physical activities and ultimately leads them to become overweight.

Among many other developed countries, unhealthy weight of residents is a big concern in

Canada. According to Statistics Canada , 61.3% of adult Canadians are obese and possess

potentially harmful level of fats. {CMAJ September 18, 2017 189 (37) E1202-E1203; DOI:

Rationale of the project

The main reason for us to choose adult obesity as our term paper is because of its

prevalence around us. We believe that various researches on this issue have to be done on a large

scale in order to help the control of obesity in Canada. It is one of the prominent issues that are

responsible for number of chronic disease and deaths. Our aim of studying the adult obesity is

also to determine its impact on individuals and to find out precautionary measures that could be

implemented to fight obesity in future to lead a healthy lifestyle. We also want to explore the role
