Problem 1
Determine the pressure drop of 30°C air flowing with a mean velocity of 8 m/s in a
circular sheet-metal duct of 300 mm diameter and 15 m long. Friction factor is, f=0.02, and the
density of air is, ρ= 1.1644 kg/m3.

Given:

v= 8
D = 300mm
f = 0.02

L= 21m
Required:
a.) ΔP

Solution:
Problem 2
The diameter in the upstream of a circular sudden enlargement duct is 0.2m while the
diameter in the downstream is 0.4m. The upstream and downstream pressures are 150 Pa
and 200 Pa, respectively. If the air temperature is 20°C, determine the flow rate through the
fitting, in lps. Consider the density of air as 1.2041kg/m 3.
Given:
P1=150 Pa
P2=200Pa
D1=0.2m
D2=0.4m
ρ=1.2041 kg/m3

Required:
a.) V
Solution:

For A1;

For A2;

Thus,

Hence,

Problem 3
A rectangular branch duct (300mm x 400 mm) leaves a main duct (300 mm x 600 mm)
at an angle of 60°. The dimensions of the main duct remain the same following the branch.
The flow rate upstream is 2.70 m3/s and the air temperature is 20 °C. Determine the
downstream pressure in the main duct. The density of air at 20 °C: ρ=1.2041 kg/m 3.
Given:
Branch Duct= 300 mm x 400 mm
Main Duct= 300 mm x 600 mm
β = 60
Q= 2.70 m3/s
`ρ = 1.2041 kg/m3
=20 °C

Required:
a.) Downstream pressure in the main duct
Solution:

@ =20 °C, ρ = 1.2041 kg/m3

Bernoulli Equation,
Problem 4
Determine the equivalent diameter of a rectangular air duct with dimension of 250 mm
by 1000 mm.

Given:
L= 250 mm
W= 1000 mm

Required:

a)

Solution:
Problem 5
An air duct 400 mm high and 800 mm wide suspended from the ceiling in a corridor,
makes a right angle turn in the horizontal plane. The inner radius is 200 mm and the outer
radius is 100 cm measured from the same center. The velocity of air in the duct is 10 m/s.
Determine the Pressure drop in this elbow. Consider this f=0.3, ρ=1.2041 kg/m3, and L= 10 m.
Given:

= 0.2 m

= 0.1 m

ρ = 1.2041 kg/m3

Required:
a.) ΔP

Solution:

= 533.33 mm = 0.533 m

.
Problem 6
A circular metal sheet air duct has a diameter of 0.45 m and a length of 25 m. The
temperature of air flowing inside is 20°C. If the pressure drop at the given length is 350 Pa,
determine the velocity of air. Considering that density of air is 1.2041 kg/m 3 and the friction
factor is 0.016.
Given:

L= 25m
T= 20°C

ρ = 1.2041 kg/m3
f=0.016

Required:
a.) Velocity
