Q4b: What other challenges face our community?

Loss of public transport
Not enough joined up communication
But too late - loss of 'community' has been dramatic and relatively sudden and I don't see it being restored any time soon.
Commuting and 2nd homes can add to a loss of community understanding
Villages used as 'dormitories' work elsewhere. Diminished understanding of what it means to live in a community.
Mixed age group activities are of interest to us
The financial ethnic cleansing of the village by professionals, CEO's and company chairmen who have made it impossible for the children of "village"
families to live in the village - these would have been pub "regulars".
Currently the building and patio a tip and spoils the feel of the beautiful villages.
lack of venues for people of all ages to get to know one another as neighbours, especially in the winter when the weather deters them from travelling
elsewhere.
None of the above

Would really like a take away service from the pub.
Lack of footpaths (sidewalks) to allow foot access or mobility access to the village
Domestic violence, working poor, food bank usage
Lack of opportunities to meet people

Q5b: What other groups or activities would you be interest in joining if they ran at the pub?
Arts/music events e.g. jam/open mic.
Musical/arts events
Classes - i.e. University of the 3rd age
Quiz evenings + dinner, coffee mornings, afternoon teas on weekends.
Quiz, Pub Games
None
Pub quizzes and raffles, comedy nights, open mic nights., Lunches and meet-ups for local businesses
Darts/Cribbage plus social activity based around village cricket/football teams - it is how communities grow - not this petty bourgeois stuff.
2-3 times a year prepare school lunch with local fresh produce. Maybe school can have hens and pub can use the eggs.
U3A Courses, Community Choir
If find it hard to mix with the community as I get very anxious about meeting new people. I’d like this place to be non threatening, non judgemental
and not clicky. Certain groups of people stick together and make it very hard for others to be accepted. Going somewhere with a purpose would help
me and my family to build better relationships with the community we live in.
Talks/lectures with visiting speakers, themed meals eg Curry night, classical music performance by musicians, chamber music , choirs, amateur
drama, film society

Q6b: In what other ways do you think the pub could have a positive impact on your life?
If it has good food a place to bring my aged mother or father
If the pub was run along the idea of a french cafe/pub/tabac it might offer a post office, shop for essentials i.e. milk as well as a pub.
It would enable me to be part of the local community
Get back in touch with childhood friends.
It would make life more interesting in the village and give a daily activity for some who may not be able to go far. I get very nervous about socialising
with people in the village. May this would help me to overcome this and me and my family develop friendship within the village, something we don’t
have now.

Q7: Is there anything that you feel will help or that we need to communicate, or is there anything else you wish to say (for example, what
you think of the project)? (31 responses, 57 skipped)
Faceilities for walkers + cyclists would be popular. Good bike parking etc. How about a mini-bus to pick people up from surrounding villages?
I would like to know whether established pub companies are interested in the site
This will be the only place in the village which will be open for adhoc meetings that don't need to be booked or paid for. It will be somewhere for
villagers to meet and chat with no agenda.
The pub is an important community resource at the heart of this and local villages, as well as providing essential parking space for the local school
rather than endangering children's lives walking to school from the village hall.
I am concerned that the project should not compete with the "new" Angela Cobbold project, complement yes but not compete.
It would be best to keep it to 'A pub' rather than trying to cover too much. The shop idea is good.
The pub needs to concentrate on what modern pubs do exclusively - alcoholic drinks & full meals. This differentiates it from competitors i,e, ACH,
Village Hall. A walkable local pub in this semi--residential area is a real asset. A shop for essentials would also be [can't read handwriting] in the
village. Themed evenings, celebrations of special occasions also are the province of pubs.
I would be plesed if the pub would embrace the needs of our diverse community and become more than just a pub. There is so much potential that
could be explored to attract lots of customers.
It would be lovely to have a flourishing community pub locally - at present we drive but if we could no longer do that we would use the pub facilities
more. A very good idea if other activities take place beside drinking + food .- good value - good food would be well used.
i think the project is an excellent idea
The pub is one of the few places where the community can get together, share news, comments and encourage well being.
We used to use the pub 2-3 times per week and would do so again (or even more) if it re-started. Well run and with a good offering the pub should
attract people from outside the village/area too.
There are already quite a few things going on at the ACH, the community centre, and now also the Cafe at the church, so the real loss to me is the
loss of a traditional pub rather than a place to do much more than this, as there are 3 other places doing this very nearby. I wonder if an alternative
approach is to come up with something to make it attractive for a chain to take on- some kind of a deal with the village, where we put up enough
money to cover the drainage and car park for example, whilst they buy and invest in the running costs for a minimum of X years. No-one from the
village would get their money back (this isn't likely anyway!) but it would mean a smaller amount would need to be raised...
Would like to see a traditional English pub with a good selection of drinks + good food available

Q7: Is there anything that you feel will help or that we need to communicate, or is there anything else you wish to say (for example, what
you think of the project)? (31 responses, 57 skipped)
I just want a pub where I can come for a drink/lunch/dinner
The Admiral's Head "died" when the customer base was driven out by incomers bidding up property prices up and the sense of village community
died. The Admiral's head is dead - for God's sake let it rest in peace.
I've moved away from bealings and miss being able to pop in when I'm back - to see who's there. I live near a pub which has had the same fabulous
menu for years. They do it well. Only about 15 choices. We repeat order because it's always delicious. A few excellent dishes is perhaps something
to consider. Good luck. You'll get my support, when I'm back. Get the community to sort the patio and car park out.
On live music, I'd suggest we kept it to 'unamplified' to avoid hostility from those nearest the pub. Has your business case resrach extended to
canvassing walkers and cyclists who pass through the area. A venue that is attractive to them has the potential to attract significant business. It is
going to be impossible for us all to get the 'pub of our dreams', so somehow the project has to be built upon us all agreeing at the outset that it will
be a compromise and that the compromise can't be some 'lowest common factor' - rather it probably needs to be 'something for everyone' even if
that means we are not always completely comfortable.
I attended the meeting in June which kicked off this project and still support it.I think regulas follow up meetings in Little Bealings are essentialon a
regular basis to update people on progress

Q7: Is there anything that you feel will help or that we need to communicate, or is there anything else you wish to say (for example, what
you think of the project)? (31 responses, 57 skipped)
I fear this will come across as rather negative but if you forgive me i will share my thoughts. I do understand the desire for an environment that
encourages a stronger sense of village identity and belonging. The northern bypass is most certainly a threat to our community , so every project
that can improve the village life should be encouraged. But as far as the pub is concerned ,the last landlord and perhaps his predecessors as well
could or did not make it a financial success. So to me a fundamental question is how could the village do it better and make a profit from the venture
? Physically the pub has issues. I remember that it was dark inside, various sets of stairs and crucially no heart.. no fireplace ( is there one but
currently covered up?). Therefore I think if it is possible to create a larger , airier and lighter space that would help. Thoughts of food. the big
challenge is how to attract villagers from Milsoms, Woodbridge pubs and restaurants and perhaps the Turks Head. Instead of offering a varied menu
how about just tow options , Chefs choice of the best local produce on offer that day or steak + chips. Keep it simple but different from any rival.
Good enough to ensure people return frequently so it it has to be at an attractive cost.. Pheasant pie or roast during the shooting season is
practically free to source. Allow diners to bring their own wine with a nil or small corkage. These further thoughts on breakfast assume that the cafe
hub in the church is not going forward. Check out the breakfast at the Thorpeness cafe . This cafe provides quick service , trendy food such as
bashed avo and poached eggs plus traditional full English.Good quality coffee as well. Advertise to the cycling ( all weekend they are up and down
Martlesham Road and motor community. Offer a sensible lunch for those older in the community and perhaps a take away service in a polystyrene
box. Apologies these thoughts must seem somewhat random!
How can we access the lonely or those who cannot get out?
I can't think of any reason why the property has much value - don't compete with professional pub companies to buy it.
Think it's great for community spirit but definitely NOT keen on the idea of it being a space for hire or used for live music/themed evening! Please try
+ keep the peace.
No, unnecessary. Many facilities in villages i.e. sports field, tennis, bowles, church, outdoor & carpet bowls, keep fit dancing etc. at AC Hall & village
hall.
It would be great if it was a pub but not if it became another village hall! It would disturb the neighbours and upset the beautiful peaceful nature of LB
Work and family commitments permitting my husband and I would volunteer in a practical way if it helped to see the pub return to community use.
This is a fantastic opportunity to bring the whole village together
As a teacher at Bealings we always used the pub for training lunches and lunch for visitors to the school. Would be great to do that again.
