EDITOR’S LETTER

As I write this, it’s the first warm day of spring (we work three months in
advance in the magazine business), and it’s safe to say, this is finally the
weekend you want to be outside all day. My Des Moines neighbors, who, like
me, have been hibernating all winter, have come out of their houses to rake
and clear up from the deep snow mounds and ice slicks that lingered in
the shade until a couple of weeks ago. The kids next door reenact Minecraft

FOR ADULTS WITH UNCONTROLLED MODERATE-TO-SEVERE ECZEMA (ATOPIC DERMATITIS)

DUPIXENT, the first eczema treatment of its kind, is not a steroid.

It is a biologic treatment that helps manage the inflammation
deep beneath the surface that causes the flare-ups you see and
feel on your skin―and keeps working, even when your skin
looks clear.
In Two Clinical Trials with DUPIXENT*
• Nearly half of patients saw 75% skin improvement
and some even saw 90% improvement
• Almost 4 times more patients taking DUPIXENT saw clear or

– 37% taking DUPIXENT as compared with 10% not taking DUPIXENT
• Patients experienced significant itch reduction, some patients
as early as 2 weeks *16-week trials compared to placebo.

i did it! A couple who loves to travel poured

their creative energy into revamping a camper, outfitting it with
home-away-from-home amenities for special family vacations.

BEFORE

Kate Malo dreamed

of memory-making
road trips. She
pictured her young
family—husband Dave,
son Thomas, 8,
and daughter Allie, 5—
hiking, building
campfi res, and taking
in the scenery.
Fueling that vision:
a 2007 Four Winds
camper handed down
from Dave’s parents.
To make it their own,
Kate and Dave
modifi ed the built-in
furniture, covered the
old fl oor, and, Kate
says, “painted every
square inch of the
walls and cabinets.”
Six weeks later,
the Des Moines-area
family headed for the
Black Hills and Rocky
Mountain National
Park, enjoying the
journey as much as
the destinations.
Turn the page to
peek inside their RV.

The Malo family spent

$1,000 updating this
26-foot camper, which
includes two bedrooms
and a full kitchen.

WABI-SABI
Beauty in imperfection. Everything gets better with age. Appreciation

W H AT I S
WA B I - S A B I ?

Chances are you’ve

heard of it, but
let’s break it down:
Wabi means
simplicity, and sabi
means beauty in
age. Together,
wabi-sabi forms a
Japanese aesthetic
all about embracing
imperfection.
The main concept is
simple: Nothing is
perfect, permanent,
or finished, and that’s
part of the beauty.

WHY IS IT
TRENDING?
In a world dominated
by social media
perfection, wabi-sabi
is a welcome
invitation to pause

what’s real. Think
of it as the Japanese
version of hygge,
the Danish
mood of coziness.

Jessica Swaney has always been

She started with bistro

then she gave the
natural wood a
fl oor-to-ceiling glossy

another parallel
with the inside.
LEATHER
SOFA
“I had to have a
leather sofa,” Jessica
says. “We have a huge
standard poodle and
a cat who likes to pick
at furniture. Leather
just looks better over
time, so I don’t stress
about scratches or
spills.” Above it, a
framed piece of Indian
embroidery echoes
the sofa’s scale and
warm tone. It’s one of
a series of patterned
textiles on throw
pillows, a re-covered
vintage chair, and
a side table draped in
fabric from Istanbul.
“You don’t need a

it hangs a little long

That’s what makes
it effortless.”

Whenever I have a

I have these great
