Instructions: Submit in hardcopy , handwritten

Submission Instructions:
 Please ensure that your name, your student ID number, Course Instructor information, Class,
Section and University name are written on the front page of the submission.
 2 marks will deducted if assignment is submitted after due date.
 All answers should be written legibly and logically.
 All plagiarized assignments will be marked 0.
 This assignment can be done in groups. Maximum number of students in a group should not
exceed 3.
 Assignments will not be returned.

NOTE: Attempt all questions. Answers of selected questions are mentioned. Complete answer
sheet will be provided after submission is done.

1. What is net force on central –q charge? Justify your answer.

1
2. Rank by magnitude of force. Assume charges are equally spaced. Justify your answer.

3. What is magnitude and direction of force on charge q > 0? Assume charges are on perfect
square of side L. (Show complete working)

Answer:

4. Three charges as shown in the figure below. What is the electric force experienced by charge
B?

Answer: FB = 90 N.

5. Two electric charges at point P and Q are separated by a distance of 10 cm, experience the
attractive forces 8 Newton. If charge Q moved 5 cm to charge P, then what is the electric
force?

Answer: F = 32 N

6. Suppose that three point charges, qa, qb and qc are arranged at the vertices of a right-angled
triangle, as shown in the diagram. What is the magnitude and direction of the electrostatic
force acting on the third charge if qa= -0.6μC, qB= +4.0 μC, qc= +20 μC. Let a= 4.0 m, and b=
3.0 m?

Answer: F(magnitude) = 77.4S exp -3 N, angle=2.53

7. Fig shows three charged particles, held in place by forces not shown. What electrostatic
force, due to the other two charges, acts on q1? Take q1 = -1.2μC, q2 = +3.7μC, q3 = -2.3μC,
r12 = 15cm, r13 = 10cm and θ = 32deg.

Answer: F1 (magnitude) = 3.73N, θ = -34deg

8. What is the total charge in coulombs of 75.0 kg of electrons?

9. Fill in the following blanks:

____________________ are negatively charged and ____________________ are positively
charged. The ____________________ reside in the nucleus of atoms and are tightly bound;
they will never leave an atom as a result of electrostatic procedures. On the other hand,
____________________ are located outside the nucleus and are easily removed from or
added to atoms. As an object begins to gain or lose ____________________ from its atoms,
it becomes positively or negatively charged. A negatively charged object has more
___________________ than ___________________. A positively charged object has more
__________________ than __________________.

10. Use your understanding of electric force and electric field to fill in the following table.

11. Objects differ from one another in terms of their relative tendency to draw electrons towards
themselves. Some materials are more electron-greedy than others. A triboelectric series is a
listing of a variety of materials in order of their relative attraction for the electrons of another
material. The listing below is an example of a triboelectric series. Materials listed near the top
of the table have a stronger affinity for electrons than those located below them.

Use the triboelectric series to answer the following questions:

a. When you pull a cotton sweater off your skin, electrons are transferred from the
___________________ to the __________________. As a result, your body acquires a
___________ charge and the cotton sweater acquires a ___________ charge.
b. When you rub a glass rod with a silk cloth, electrons are transferred from the
___________________ to the __________________. As a result, the glass rod acquires a
___________ charge and the silk cloth acquires a ___________ charge.

4
c. Suppose you rub a rubber rod with a silk cloth and a second rubber rod with a wool sweater.
The silk cloth will acquire a __________ charge; the wool sweater will acquire a __________
charge. The sweater and the cloth will then be observed to ______________________each
other.
d. Suppose you rub a glass rod with a silk cloth and a second glass rod with rabbit fur. The silk
cloth will acquire a __________ charge; the rabbit fur will acquire a __________ charge. The
rabbit fur and the silk cloth will then be observed to ______________________ each other.

12. What is the value and direction of the electric field at point C? Points A and B are point charges.
