Field Observation Assignment #2

1. ake a scale drawing of the classroom. If possible, make your drawing in the morning
M
before the students arrive or after they have left at the end of the day.
E. I would not change the layout of this classroom. There is enough space to
move around. If there is a fire drill, all the students would be able to exit
efficiently and quickly. The layout is in a way that you can move and also is in a
way so that the teacher can see her students at any point in the room.
2. How this classroom reflects the five keys to good room arrangement:
a. This room is consistent with goals and activities. If she wanted to do stations, she
has enough room and tables to do so. The tables are set so everyone can see the
board and so she can see them.
b. All the high traffic areas are free of any extra congestion it could possibly have.
The high traffic areas would be the computers and the tables in the classroom.
There is nothing major blocking their paths. If two students wanted to get up and
the same time and they were sitting inward, they could without bumping into each
other.
c. As aforementioned earlier, the students can be seen easily by the teacher. The
teacher can easily see the students. Though there is a little bit of clutter on her
desk, it isn’t piled up in a way that would affect the students.
d. All the items that students need are easily accessible in the classroom. If they
need a pencil, they can easily grab it from the teacher’s desk. The other art items
are in the back of the classroom next to the papers. They have items labeled as
well.
e. The way the tables are has a great vantage point for every students. They can see
the smartboard from every seat. Nothing blocks their view from the board. Their
artwork is all over the classroom so they can see their work from all points in the
class as well.
3. There is no major rearrangements needed for this classroom. Her classroom is very
effective for her teaching style and learning for the students. It’s one of the reasons why I
love her classroom. The students work well with each other and if they feel happy in the
environment, they will focus more which will lead to successful results.
4. Observing students in the class
a. There are 22 students in Ms.Billington’s class. There are 11 boys and girls (which
worked out for my count) in the class.
b. There is a certain table that is in the back of the class that seems to be more quiet
than the others. They participate in group stuff, but they are not as “loud” as the
other students. They just help each other, keep to themselves, and ask questions if
they need help.
c. As rare as this sounds, every child raises their hand for the most part when
questions. The tables on the right side raise their hands more and usually have the
correct answer versus the left side of the room. The teacher explained to me how
the students are paired by high and low students so the high ones can help the
lows.
d. As mentioned earlier, those in the back of the room are not that rambunctious.
Those who need an extra eye on is in the front of the classroom. The teacher put
them in the front at two tables to keep an eye on them.
e. Students who received the most praise did not depend on those who are louder or
more rude than others. It was those who were doing what they were supposed to
do at the time the teacher requested it. The teacher would say “I like how Elisa
has her notebook out and ready to go. I like how John is waiting patiently like
Elisa. I wonder who else will be ready just like them.” and this truly motivates the
class to go faster and be more efficiently.
f. This is this teacher’s first year, so it’s really interesting seeing her teach and
seeing her methods. Sometimes though, she has ignored something when
someone says something. She has a side where if the student says something
irrelevant, she might not respond because of the class aspect and how it would
affect everyone in the end. There is not a specific student or students that are
ignored but sometimes she faces little confrontation and sometimes she does not.

I have found out that these students tend to come from a rough background. Though these
students are nice and they will even open the door for you without even asked, they have
some who are truly going through something at home. The school has a club called the
“Backpack Club” and this is the chance for students who need extra food to be able to get
food for the weekend. Though they are not the only school that has something of this sort,
this is something I noticed. I also noticed that these students love coming to school. They
love to learn and their excitement when they do makes being a teacher worth it. They are
the inspiration and future of the world.
