D. Abstraction There are many ways or method use on how to decorate finished products.
( _16__ minutes) Finishing materials are commonly used in decorating wood, bamboo, and metal
products. Some are listed below:
1. Fillers – these are applied on wood to fill up cracks, holes, and grooves. There
are two kinds of wood fillers:
a. Paste filler – It comes from silex, raw linseed oil, and turpentine. It has colours
such as natural, red, or golden oak.
b. Shellac – this is a kind of varnish that dries up easily and is not waterproof. It
comes from lac gum diluted in alcohol. Shellac is available in white or orange colour.
White paste fillers are used to fill in big cracks and grooves or wood.
2. Stains – The common wood stains used are oil stain, water stain, and spirit stain
which are named after the solvent used. Stains are sold in different colours and
shades. The easiest to apply on wood is oil stain. The hardest one to apply is the
spirit stain because it dries up easily.
3. Paint – A finishing material most commonly used on wood. Paint prevents
moisture on the wood which causes decay. Paint beautifies wooden objects and
makes them easy to clean.
4. Varnish – This is a transparent finishing material that comes from gum, linseed
oil, and resin. It is hard and shiny when dry and gives sheen to the wooden project.
Varnish is widely used in furniture and upholstery making.
5. Enamel – this is kind of varnish with colour. Powdered colour pigments are mixed
with the varnish. it is used on wood that is not exposed to the sun or rain because it
easily fades. There are two kinds of enamel, gloss and non-gloss. Gloss enamel
gives sheen and has an attractive effect on wood. Non-gloss enamel does not give
any sheen, but it beautifies wood.
6. Lacquer – is another kind of varnish made of melted cotton tinters, gum, or
chemicals. Like enamel, lacquer comes in different colours.

E. Application Why is it important to enhance/decorate finished products? Present your answers in

( _5__ minutes) a unique way.
Group Activity:
Group 1 – (Song)
Why is it important to paint materials made of wood?
Group 2 – (Rap)
Explain the importance of enhancing/decorating finished products.

can see in the pictures?”

C. Analysis What is the uses of enamel paint?varnish?wood stain?

( _5__ minutes) What are the other finishing materials do you know?
Do you know the sources of these materials?

D. Abstraction
( _15__ minutes) The teacher will discuss:
There are sources of finishing materials like:
1. Shellac – it is a good finish for many projects. It comes from the
excreta of insects called a luc bug. The colour is yellow and appears like
small pieces of cellophane. Before it is used, it is mixed with denatured
alcohol.
2. Varnish – it is another finishing material that beautifies and
preserves a project. It is made from copal gum dissolved in pure boiled
linseed oil. Copal gum comes from resin of pine trees buried several
feet below the ground. Linseed oil comes from oil of cotton seed. When
varnish becomes sticky and hard, add turpentine to make it thin and
usable again. Varnish and turpentine are sold in cans and bottles.
3. Paint – it is another finishing material that is always used
because of its beautiful colour and a good protector of materials. The
body of paint is a mixture of four elements: pigment, vehicle, thinner,
and drier. It comes in cans of different sizes. When the paint gets sticky
or hard, add paint thinner. If thinner is not available, use gasoline or
petroleum as a substitute.
4. Lacquer – this is a synthetic product which is largely used in all
manufactured articles. This finishing material could retain the natural
colour of the material to which it is applied. Like varnish and shellac it is
sold in cans and bottles. The solvent used is lacquer thinner.
5. Stain (Tina) – stain is colouring material which is applied to the
surface of a wood to improve its appearance. There are three kinds of
stain: oil stain, water stain, and spirit stain.
When you mix the dye (tina) with petroleum, the result is oil stain. When
the dye is mixed with water, it is now water stain. When the dye is mixed
with alcohol, the mixture is called spirit stain.
The dye is sold in boxes or in kilos. Spirit stain is ready mixed. It is sold
in cans and bottles. All of these stains are applied by means of brush,
spray, or cotton cloth.
6. Sandpaper – it is made grits, usually ground silica, flint, quartz,
or emery glued to thick paper or cloth. Sandpaper for wood is called flint
paper and for metal it is called emery cloth at present we have water
proof abrasive for metal. Both are used for smoothing rough surface of
objects.
7. Glue – glue is a paste for wood materials. It is in powder or in
cake form. It is manufactured from fish, animals, and plastic resin.

What are the different kinds of finishing materials?

E. Application
( _10_ minutes)
Group Activity
Group 1 – Give examples of materials using varnish and shellac.
Group 2 – Give examples of materials using paint and lacquer.
Group 3 – Give examples of materials using stain and sandpaper.

The teacher will ask: “If you were given a chance to put some small
business about a product made of wood, bamboo, and metal. How will
you raise it?”

The teacher will then further ask the pupils: “Why is it important to know
the source of finishing materials in the products?”

F. Assessment Direction: Match Column A with Column B. Write your answer before the
( _5__ minutes) number.

D. Abstraction A plan in starting to create new products or increasing volume of production must be
( 15 minutes) done to guide you in achieving your goals. The plan will help in monitoring and evaluating
the progress of your business and see if it is possible for expansion or to create another
product. Below are planning ideas that you can do for your products.
1. Product planning- enhancement, packaging, and distribution or selling. It includes
adapting to current trends.
2. Budget or financial planning- developing effective strategies in managing capital or
funds.
3. Marketing planning- a review on the current market situations the capacity of the
target market to buy the products. The promotion of the product should be
considered.

Here are some advantages of an effective production plan and scheduling.

 Reduced labour costs by eliminating wasted time and improving
process flow.
 Reduced inventory costs by decreasing the need for safety
stocks and excessive work-in-process inventories.
 Optimized equipment usage and increased capacity.
 Improved on-time deliveries of products and services.

What are the key elements to address in production plan?

The production plan initially needs to address specific key elements well in advance of
production in order to ensure an uninterrupted flow of work as it unfolds.

 Material ordering—Materials and services that require a long

lead time or are at an extended shipping distance, also known as
blanket orders, should be ordered in advance of production
requirements. Suppliers should send you materials periodically to
ensure an uninterrupted pipeline.
 Equipment procurement—Procuring specialized tools and
equipment to initiate the production process may require a longer
lead time. Keep in mind that the equipment may have to be
custom made or simply difficult to set up. This type of equipment
may also require special training.
 Bottlenecks (delays)—These are constraints or restrictions in
the process flow and should be assessed in advance so you can
plan around them or eliminate them before you begin production.
When you assess possible bottlenecks, be aware that they may
shift to another area of the process. Dealing with bottlenecks is a
continual challenge for any business.
 Human resources acquisitions and training—Key or
specialized positions may demand extensive training on
specialized equipment, technical processes or regulatory
requirements. These employees should be interviewed
thoroughly about their skills. When hiring them, allow sufficient
time for training and be sure that they are competent in their work
before the job begins. This will ensure that your process or
service flows smoothly.
E. Application Group Activity: Making a plan
( 10 minutes)
Group I: Pen holder
Group II: Dust pan
Group III: Flower Vase

What strategies can you apply to sustain waste materials

D. Abstraction What are the importance of sustaining waste management?

(15_ minutes)
If you happen to be one of those people who believes recycling is pointless, the planet is
begging you to read further. We’ve reached a point where there are no more questions
regarding the advantages of sustainable living, recycling, and responsible waste
management. There is clear evidence that following these practices is vital to protect the
earth and our environment.
Less Landfills, More Green Jobs
This is a simple numbers game. The more you recycle, the bigger the recycling industry
becomes. There are more job opportunities for those in “green” industries than ever
before, and there’s still plenty of room for growth. Plus, it’s no surprise that most people in
your community would prefer a new recycling plant over another landfill. Landfills take up
acres of land and the smell can stretch for miles. Protect your property value and help
boost the economy by making the right choice when it comes time to throw out the trash.

Keeping Your Community Safe

In addition to saving space in a landfill, recycling reduces the chances of air pollution and
water contamination. When communities don’t dispose of their waste properly and
landfills become overused, toxic gasses and chemicals can seep into your air and water.
Separating and recycling your waste can help prevent this from happening, as well as
keep your community safe from infectious diseases. If you happen to care about your
neighbors, waterways and local parks, this is a real selling point.

Save Energy and Our Natural Resources

Creating new items from recycled material uses less energy throughout production. Using
these recycled materials also helps to prevent manufacturing companies from having to
destroy natural resources in order to create raw materials. The Environmental Protection
Agency promotes a “reduce-reuse-recycle” routine, and by following it closely, we can do
a lot for our planet. The amount of trees and water one person or household can save is
astounding when recycling becomes a regular practice. You can contact your local
company that handles solid waste management i and find out more information about
recycling properly into the future.

Activity 3: Recycle

Materials: pictures of waste materials and

finished product.
Direction: Match the waste materials to the
finished product.
Questions:
1. What can you say about those materials?
2. How will you describe the finished product?
3. What process can be done to lessen the
garbage at home, school and in the community?

C. Analysis
(5_ minutes) Answer these questions;
1. What is reduce, reuse and recycle?
2. What are the three processes in recycling
waste materials?
3. What are the importance of these
processes?
4. How will you apply these processes in your
everyday life?

D. Abstraction
(10_ minutes) It is easy to throw away something and feel glad that you got rid of it and will never
see again. But sad to say, it does not end here. The things you throw away go
somewhere, usually to dumpsites or landfills. Some may end up in empty lots, rivers,
and the sea.

It is also a reality that you are now living in a society where everything is almost
disposable. You tend to buy new things instead of getting old ones repaired. It has
become more convenient to throw away items. You start to realize that it has become
a problem not only for you today but for future generations.

One of the best ways to manage trash is to recycle them. Recycling is the conversion
of old and used materials into new products. The key component to proper waste
management is recycling.

Process of Recycling
Materials that can be recycled are wood, glass, metal, paper, and plastic. Electronic
waste is considered special waste like ink cartridges, cell phones, batteries,
computers, and non-functioning appliances. Together with plastic products, these are
non-biodegradable wastes since they do not disintegrate or rot. Biodegradable waste
such as food and garden waste can be recycled through composting.
Collection of waste materials can be done in two ways:
1. Bring waste materials to collection centers like junk shops or the barangay
waste management center where there are separate containers for different
types of trash.
2. Pick up from residences where every barangay has a schedule of garden
collection.
Once materials are collected and segregated from junk shops or in your barangay
center, these materials will be sorted, cleaned, and reprocessed into new materials
such as handicraft projects or to be used as raw materials for manufacturing.
Everything that comes from nature can be returned to nature.

Importance of Recycling
Recycling brings about so many benefits like:
 Employment through livelihood products
 Helping reduce pollution and the need for landfills
 Helping save energy by reducing the use of fuel in manufacturing products
 Helping families save money by reducing expenses for buying new products
 Helping the economy through investments in local recycling programs.
 Helping conserve and sustain the use of natural resources for future
generations.
 Bringing out the innovative skills of individuals, and
 Promoting community spirit through unity and cooperation

E. Application Ask:
(10_ minutes) What can we do to lessen the waste materials in our
environment?

Make slogan about recycling.

F. Assessment Multiple choice:

( 5 minutes) Write only the letter of the correct answer.
1. What is the most serious problems that needs immediate
action nowadays?
a. Waste disposal

items to prevent waste of potentially useful materials?
a. Reducing
b. Reusing
c. Recycling
d. Both a and b
3. If you apply the 3Rs symbols at home, to lessen the waste
materials, what is the easier for you to do?
a. Recycling
b. Reducing
c. Reusing
d. None of the above
4. Your teacher asked you to bring reusable materials like old
clothes, shoes, toys etc. to give them to the victims of fire,
what process did she used?
a. Recycling
b. Reusing

d. None of the above
5. Why is it recycling important?
a. Because it helps to lessen the garbage
b. Because it makes the surrounding
beautiful.
c. Because it supports the needs of the
family
d. Because it makes people busy
