POETRY - come from the Greek word “Poiesis” which means “a making: a forming, creating or
art of poetry/expression). The language of Feeling.
Poetics – the study of the aesthetic or art of poetry.

GENRES OF POETRY
______________1. The oldest poetry genre.
Tells a story
Example:
Homer’s Illiad and Oddysseys
______________2. It recounts a continuous narrative of heroic or mythological character.
Example:
Virgil’s Aenid, Indian: Gilgamish, Ramayana and Mahabharata
______________3. Verse to be spoken, sung and appears in varying forms
 Performed on stage
 Tragedy (Sad Ending)
 Comedy (Happy Ending)
Example:
William Shakespear’s Plays: Romeo and Juliet, Mid Summer Night, Macbeth,
Othello, Veronica, The Tempest

Used by Romans for political purposes.

Portrays feelings, states of mind or perceptions

FORMS OF POETRY

ELEMENTS OF POETRY
