“LANGUAGE ACQUISITION SURVEY”

What language are you comfortable using?

Answer: “In daily basis I’m very comfortable using the Cebuano dialect,
Filipino and English language.”

In what way have you learned your first language? How about your
second language, English language for example?
Answer: “I learned my first language due to the environment that I was
in. My parents who were my first teachers, my playmates and also my
friends were speaking the Cebuano dialect to communicate with me and
to other people. I've learned it through observation then imitation and I
masterfully learned it through applying it to my social interaction with
others.
While in my second language, I learned it first through socializing to
people who speaks the foreign language, reading english novels or books,
and watching foreign movies. In these ways I was able to slowly adapt
and fluently use it in communicating. I also learned it in school because it
is a needed subject here in the Philippines.”

What were some of the issues or problems that you encountered when
speaking the English language?
Answer: “One of my issues is sometimes when I’m speaking English, I
have a sentence in mind, but I’m missing two or three important
vocabulary words and then it becomes difficult for me to say what I’m
thinking.”

What were your reinforcements or actions to address these difficulties?

Answer: “I always use the Merriam Webster dictionary app in my phone
whenever I don’t know the meaning of a particular word, and I also read
foreign books to widen my vocabulary.”

Are you still interested in learning more language? Why or why not?
Answer: “Yes, I am still interested to learn more language because it will
help me to communicate to all races in the world and be able to
understand different people. Also being multi-lingual helps you to easily
find a job outside the country and have an edge to other jobseekers.”

What language are you comfortable using?

Answer: “I always use the Cebuano, Filipino and English langauge.”

In what way have you learned your first language? How about your
second language, English language for example?
Answer: “I learned through observing the people around me since I was
young. My family and friends always speaks in vernacular because that is
our native language. On the other hand, I acquired my second language
because to my exposure to foreign drama series since then. Aside from
that I’m also a big fan of English novels that really helped me to learn the
English language faster and fluently also with the help of my English
teachers in school.”

What were some of the issues or problems that you encountered when
speaking the English language?
Answer: “I always feel nervous and anxious thinking that I might commit
a mistake while speaking English. I always have these ideas in my mind
but whenever I face a lot of people all my thoughts are gone that
eventually leads me to stutter and make grammatical errors while
speaking.”

What were your reinforcements or actions to address these difficulties?

Answer: “First, I tell myself not to worry too much about my grammar. I
try to just do my best to communicate, Second, I always keep a positive
attitude and sometimes think of myself as a native English speaker and
focus on celebrating what I know, not being frustrated about what I don’t
know. Third, I practice speaking English as much as possible in low-
pressure situations. I try to talk to myself! It might feel ridiculous, but it
really helps me!”

Are you still interested in learning more language? Why or why not?
Answer: “I’m really interested to learn many languages as much as
possible. This is for a fact that there are many advantages when I will
learn more languages which includes making friends to different
nationalities and also knowing their culture. I believe also that this will
offer me a lot of job opportunities abroad.”
