STAND: PROS CONS ISSUE: Cause of disagreement in the “No homework policy”

No homework policy is one of the latest issues in the Philippines that receives different opinions
and point of view. According to Paningao (2015), in the Philippines setting, homework is considered
as a tool for practice but only given when necessary, to avoid dishing out extra stress and hindering
a student’s social growth. Many Educators disagreed to eliminate the homework from both public
and private schools, which could possibly cause the “wrong values” of the students. For TDC, we
should not think negatively in having a homework but as another way to introduce students’
discipline and responsibility among the learners. For Mark Trifilio, principal of a public school,
students will be more creative in their own way and to do the things without relying on other
people. As a student, we experience having homework since we start studying. And we witnessed
the importance of it that was very helpful in the student’s performance. Aside from having extra
points in doing homework, it helps to strengthen the student’s capabilities. In a 2018 poll, 64% of
the students say homework is helpful. The implementation of the “No homework policy” attracts
the attention of the citizens and also the government officials, who are disagreed with this bill
because of the three strong arguments: homework will be the basis of the student’s responsibility
to work independently, it will help students to gather other information that are not being
discussed inside the school, and it will train the learners from Kinder to Grade 12 students to be
more creative and to develop their skill in their college life.
First, Vargas (2018) argued that homework is a burden for children and parents, has caused the
decline of family time and even undermines learning interest. Homework will never be burden if
the students manage their time correctly or if they have time management. Why should we
eliminate the homework in our country when we know it gives a huge impact on a student’s
learning and development. In this case, teachers discuss the value and importance of a homework.
“Homework is an important part of the school’s approach to help young people work, think and
learn on their own. We understand that primary children will often need help with their homework
and appreciate the significant support provided by families in this regard,” said Munira Al-Nahed,
a primary teacher. Since 2012, schools in New South Wales and Victoria published the reviews in
having homework. Homework improves the children’s academic performance and it also promotes
parental engagement.
Second, it will help the students to gather more and deep information that are not being discussed
inside the school. Because our learning doesn’t happen only inside the school, it continuous inside
our home to add another knowledge that we found by ourselves. However, students spent so much
hours and efforts correcting their homework to avoid zero score. Survey of high-performing high
schools by the Standford Graduate School of found that 56% of students believes that homework
is a major source of stress. Students suffered lack of sleep, health problems and lack of time in their
friends, and family. But having a time management in doing homework at home will help you a lot,
it will avoid the following if you use your time correctly. It will eliminate distractions, get organized
get a good sleep at night and so on. Students who believes that homework is not a good idea is the
students who doesn’t manage their time correctly. While there are 33% of students who get good
grades in that category.
Lastly, students from Kinder to Grade 12 will be more creative and develop their skills that they will
use in their college days. Other parents argue that teachers don’t have that much power to make
sure that all of their students understand the lesson that they discussed. Jasmine, a parent of a
students of Filipino school in Salmiya said that, “homework is useful for her son and makes him
practice what he has learned in school that day. The child will learn responsibility and develop self-
discipline. I would prefer my child spends his time doing homework than waste his time playing
video games,” she told. Homework is a good thing that the students should have because it will
help them in their development that the children will adopt as they grow old and in their college
life that seems to be more challenging and has more work to do. Meanwhile, Education Secretary
Leonor Briones said that, “Alam naman natin na kung minsan, ang homework, hindi naman ang
bata ang gumagawa pagdating sa bahay,” she said. In contrasting that, parents are busy enough to
do their children’s homework and also student’s does not want to inform their parents that they
have homework to do. Students behavior should give focus also to determine if eliminating
homework will matches the present situation between the students and their parents. Briones
supported the “No homework policy,” by having a formal way of learning that will be done inside
the school, to have relaxation, and to bond with their parents and their friends. In giving different
opinion, homework is not a big problem in our country since we have it for a long time that we do
not heard any complaints.
To enclose this, our group fully believes that eliminating homework is not the solution of the
student’s stress and other hardships that they suffered to make their study easier. With our
arguments: homework will be the basis of the student’s responsibility to work independently, it will
help the students to gather other information that are not being discussed inside the school, it will
help the students to train form Kinder to Grade 12 students to be more creative and to develop the
student’s skill in their college life. Homework is not meant to torment the students but to teach
students that will benefit them in their development, and in their real-life situation that will not
affect their quality time with their parents, relaxation and other things to do if they have a self-
discipline and time management. Doing homework will encourage the students to be responsible,
diligence and educate them with the value of hard work and being hard-working in life. Amelia HC
Ylagan said, “Law makers should do their homework on their dangerous “No homework” proposal.”
