Internet Explorer – Compatibility View & ActiveX Setting

Compatibility Setting

To access web-based system from the government agencies or banks that require the use of Internet Explorer
web browser, we sometime may have to make some changes to the web browser’s setting. This usually only
applies to the new/updated IE web browser.

Older IE web browser may NOT need to do this setting. E.g.: IE9 on Win XP or some IE11 on Win 7.

You must test the system with the default setting first before doing any changes. If successful, just use it as
is.

This is the IE version that I use to make this guide:

Internet Explorer 11
Version 11.0.9600.19504
Update Version: 11.0.150
Windows 7 Pro 64bit.

Most of time, if Windows or the Internet browser block the website that we want to access, it is because of
the security settings. We have to tell ‘them’ that the website is trusted and safe to access.

Option 3: Enable ActiveX

ActiveX is the IE browser’s component that we usually have to ENABLE to use/access old governments or
banks web-based system.

Any websites that have very strict requirement to use ONLY Internet Explorer may have something to do
with ActiveX.

New web-based system that based on JAVA or DOTNET may not require ActiveX to be enabled.

We continue the process from Option 2.

Open IE browser – Click the gear icon(Tools) – Click Internet options – Click Security tab – Click Trusted
sites

Click the Sites button just to make sure the bank website is there. If ok, Click button Close.

Click button Custom level...

Internet Explorer – Compatibility View & ActiveX Setting

If all the above settings still not successful, below are something you can do.

1. Contact/email the banks or government agencies and ask them what settings (E.g.: IE browser, firewall,
etc.) to be done to enable you to use their web-based system from you current computer configuration. (Give
you Operating System and IE browser version)

or

2. You need to have an older system (PC) just for the purpose of using the web-based system.

Hope this simple guide useful in some way or another.
