Surgical/Trauma/Burns Intensive Care Unit

Banner - University Medical Center Tucson
Tucson, Arizona

Banner Health Recruiter:

I am applying to Banner’s New Nurse Experience Program. Currently, I am a 4th semester

nursing student in the University of Arizona’s College of Nursing BSN Program and will be
graduating in December of 2019. I am seeking employment as a New Graduate RN on the
Surgical/Trauma/Burns Intensive Care Unit. Two of the unit’s charge nurses notified me of this
position. I have been in contact with Megan Corona who works in the Human Resources
department and Mellissa Davis who is the nurse manager for the intensive care units.

I began my high acuity clinical experience in Banner - University Medical Center Tucson’s
various ICUs in January 2019, including the cardiovascular ICU, neurological ICU, and
surgical/trauma ICU. At this time, I learned how to effectively communicate with patients and
staff while grasping an understanding of what is required for excellent patient care and
outcomes. These shifts totaled 270 hours across the semester.

While working at Houston Methodist Hospital in the heart of the Texas Medical Center this
summer, I was able to work on central line associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) research
and protocols for nursing staff. I presented my research and recommendations to their board of
nursing and education departments. This was a hospital wide effort to reduce central line
infection rates, lower facility costs, and improve patient outcomes.

Over the last 2 months, I have worked alongside the nurses on Banner Tucson’s STICU during
my preceptorship where I have worked on nursing skills such as time management, critical
thinking, and organization. During this time, I learned about some of the common injuries seen
and the basic protocols for treatment of each. These shifts totaled 180 hours across the
preceptorship. I found the STICU to be a rewarding place with the ability to continue to stay up
to date on the latest evidence-based research and protocols while truly feeling that I was helping
make a difference in patient lives and care.

Thank you for taking the time to look over my application. I truly believe that I have the
potential to be a valuable asset to the facility. I am able to follow up with you if you have further
questions to the role I am able to play on your team. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Gillian Fernandez
