Q.1 A truss with a pinned support at A and a roller support at C is subjected to a set
of vertical and horizontal forces as shown in Figure Q1. It is given that the
modulus of elasticity (E) is 200 GPa and the radius of each circular member is
15 mm. It is required to use “Energy Method” to determine the vertical
displacement at joint F.

(a) Determine the internal force in each member of the truss caused by the
real loads. Use negative sign (-) and positive sign (+) to indicate the
compressive the tensile force respectively. (9 marks)

(b) Determine the internal force in each member of the truss caused by the
virtual load. Use negative sign (-) and positive sign (+) to indicate the
compressive the tensile force respectively. (9 marks)

(c) Calculate the vertical displacement of joint F. (7 marks)

Q.2 An indeterminate beam AB with constant EI subjected to external loads as

shown in Figure Q2 has fixed supports at A and B. Analyze the beam by using
“Flexibility Method” in terms of P, L and EI.

(Assume P is equal to w × L and the horizontal force at supports A and B is

ZERO)

(a) State the degree of statical indeterminacy. (2 marks)

(b) Sketch the primary structure for the beam by taking moment restraints at A

Q.3 A continuous beam with varying flexural rigidity (EI) is subjected to external
loads as shown in Figure Q3. The beam has a fixed support at A and roller
supports at B, C and D. Analyze the continuous beam by using “Moment
Distribution Method”.

(a) Find distribution factors at all joints. (4 marks)

(b) Determine the fixed end moments at the supports. (6 marks)

(c) Calculate the distributed and carry over moments. Hence find the final
end moments. (11marks)

Q.4 A propped cantilever beam AB is subjected to an external load as shown in

Figure Q4. The beam has a roller support at A and a fixed support at B. The
labeled degree of freedoms and the relative flexural rigidities of the beam are
shown in the figure. Given that modulus of elasticity (E) is 200 GPa and the
moment of inertia (I) is 400*10-6 m4. Use the “Stiffness Method” to determine:

(a) the fixed end member forces; (4 marks)

(b) the known load and displacement vectors of the structure; (2 marks)

(c) the structure stiffness matrices in terms of EI; (5 marks)

(d) the unknown displacements at joints A in terms of EI; (4 marks)

(e) the support reactions; and (4 marks)
