Notes :
Q.1 A truss with a pinned support at A and a roller support at C is subject to a set of
vertical and horizontal forces as shown in Figure Q1. It is given that the
modulus of elasticity (E) is 200 GPa and the cross-sectional area (A) of each
member is 1000mm2. It is required to use “Energy Method” to determine the
vertical displacement at joint D.
(a) Determine the internal force in each member of the truss caused by the
real loads. Use negative sign (-) and positive sign (+) to indicate the
compressive the tensile force respectively. (13 marks)
(b) Determine the internal force in each member of the truss caused by the
virtual load of 1 kN acting at D. Use negative sign (-) and positive sign (+)
to indicate the compressive the tensile force respectively. (8 marks)
[ Note : All calculated forces must be summarized in Table Q.1and detached for
submission together with your answer booklet. ]

Q.2 A set of external loads is acted on a steel beam ABCD with a constant flexural
rigidity (EI) as shown in Figure Q2. The beam has a fixed support at D and
roller supports at A and B. Given that modulus of elasticity (E) is 205GPa and
the moment of inertia (I) is 400*10-6 m4. Analyze the continuous beam ABCD
by using “Method of Consistent Deformation”..
(b) Sketch the primary structure for the steel beam by taking reactions at A and
B as redundants. (3 marks)

Q.3 A continuous beam ABCD with various flexural rigidity (EI) is subjected to
external loads as shown in Figure Q3. The beam has fixed supports at D and
roller supports at A, B and C. Analyze the continuous beam by using “Moment

Q.5 A beam ABCD has a fixed support at A subjected to the loads as shown in
Figure Q5. The beam has a Young’s modulus of elasticity E = 205GPa and a
constant but unknown flexural rigidity. It is required to use “Energy Method”
to design the value of I such that the vertical deflection at point D can be
controlled within the design limit:
(a) Draw the bending moment diagram of the beam ABCD caused by real
loads. Indicate in the diagram all the equations of the bending moment
M(x) with reference to the given coordinate system with x originateing
from A as below. (12 marks)
(b) Draw the bending moment diagram of the beam ABCD caused by virtual
load of 1kN. Indicate in the diagram the equations of the bending moment
m(x). (6 marks)
(c) Use Method of Virtual Work to determine the smallest Moment of Inertia
I required for the beam so that the deflection at D does not exceed the
design limit of 1/360 of the span length. (7 marks)
