firmware J200P45 and J210P22 SX88, SX80 iSCSI

Release of J200P50 and J210P23 Page 3

Issue and Description

There is an existing Firmware issue on the FibreCAT SX60, SX80, SX88 and SX80 iSCSI series running
the following firmware versions: J200P45 and J210P22.
The firmware issue causes the Management Controller (MC) configuration information to be lost and the
MC to become unavailable because of:

Management Controller failure during normal operation

Management Controller failure after a shut down or controller restart

Note:
The MC Failure does not result in any data loss or data availability issue (no loss of access to customer
data stored on the array). The Storage Controller (SC) will not affect.

This firmware issue can have the following consequences:

The array cannot be managed from the affected controller via CLI and Web interface, but it’s still
possible to be managed from the partner controller (in a dual controller system).
It can happen, that the MC will continue to reboot with NO informational messages in the event
logs but SC continues to operate normally. However, the debug logs will indicate that the MC is
not available (debug log generated from the partner controller).
The event notification on component failures is no longer available, if the MC of the partner
controller is not connected to Ethernet (or in a single controller configuration).
The failure will not allow normal Firmware update via Web interface. The partner Firmware
Update (PFU) will fail on the MC upgrade for the affected controller.
From the users perspective you will not be able to manage the array from the failed controller but the
Storage Controller will stay operational and no data-loss or data-unavailability will occur. Also, the failed
controller can be managed via the MC of the partner controller. The IO-Module firmware will stay at
revision: O300B23. General Configuration rules, further restrictions, known problems and HBA-settings
will stay as described in the previous firmware release notes that are included in this package.

Solution
New firmware has been developed for each of the controller models, which eliminates the
problem of the loss of configuration information and the MC not being accessible.
New firmware revisions are: J200P50 and J210P23
J200P45 and J210P22 are only interim-codes for immediate update to the new revisions.
Considering the critical nature of the new firmware upgrade, it is necessary to upgrade
immediately.
As long as the MC issue did not occur, the new firmware will fix the bug completely and no
controller exchange is necessary.
If the described consequences occur in your array, please contact your Service Organization.

Update instruction

You must follow the update instructions for this Firmware update; otherwise the update could end in data
corruption!
It's strongly recommended to backup your data before update FibreCAT SX firmware.
Update to FW J200P50 is only allowed from FW J200P45 (interim code)
Update to FW J210P23 is only allowed from FW J210P22 (interim code)
Caution – Upgrading firmware must be performed off-line, with all host I/O stopped! Completing
the upgrade requires a maintenance window of up to an hour per FibreCAT SX System.
Do not attempt to upgrade both controllers at the same time. This is not supported and will result
in unpredictable failures and may yield unpredictable results.
Caution – Do not interrupt the Power or LAN connection while transferring the new firmware.
FibreCAT SX Manager uses pop-up windows to show the status of the update process.
Disable any browser features or tools that block pop-up windows.
Be aware that you have the delivered micro-DB9 serial cable to establish a serial connection to
the controllers.

Code load Procedure for Controller Firmware

1) Using a web browser, log into the FibreCAT SX Manager Web Interface on Controller A as Manage
user
2) Check that the Partner Firmware Upgrade (PFU) function is enabled
a. Select Manage -> General Config -> System Configuration
b. Set Partner Firmware Upgrade to “Enabled”
c. Click Change System Configuration.
3) When processing is complete, a message near the top of the page informs you that your change was
successful.
4) Select in the Web browser of Controller A : Manage -> Update Software -> Controller Software
5) Use Browse to select the FW-file: J200Pxx.bin or J210Pxx.bin from your computer disk.

6) Click Load Software Package File, and follow the instructions.

7) The current version and the version that will be loaded are displayed. Click Proceed with firmware
update
8) Update procedure of Controller A will take up to 15 Minutes!!! Do not cycle power or reboot
during this time!!!
9) Once code has been loaded you’ll receive a confirmation pop up, you’ll be logged out and the
controller will reboot. After 1 minute, you can log again into the FibreCAT SX Manager Web Interface
on Controller A as Manage user
10) The enabled Partner Firmware Update function will now recognize that Controller A has a newer FW
than Controller B. After a few minutes, Controller B will be updated automatically with the newer FW
package by Controller A.
11) The Update procedure will take again up to 15 Minutes!!! Do not cycle power or reboot during
this time!!!
12) Once code has been loaded Controller B will reboot as well.
13) After both Controllers are up and running, please confirm that all code versions are now up to date on
both RAID Controllers by selecting in FibreCAT SX Manager Web Interface on Controller A as
Manage user: Monitor -> Advanced Settings -> Controller Versions
14) Update is completed

Code load Procedure for IO Module - Expansion Shelf Firmware: O300B23

1) Using a web browser, log into the FibreCAT SX Manager Web Interface on controller A as Manage
user
2) Select in the Web browser of Controller A: Manage -> Update Software -> Enclosure Firmware ->
Update Firmware
3) Select the Enclosure Processors Types that should be updated and click ….. Continue
4) Select in the next Window all of your Enclosure Processors and Click Continue
5) Use Browse to select the FW-file: O300B23.bin from your computer disk
6) Click Load Software Package File, and follow the instructions.
7) Click Start Device firmware update
The Update procedure will flash the new Firmware into all attached Expansion Shelf Modules of
Controller A and B. This Update procedure has to be started only from Controller A, it’s not necessary
to flash the Firmware a second time from Controller B.
8) Verify that the Firmware File was flashed correctly into all attached Expansion Shelf Modules via Web
Interface: Manage -> Update Software -> enclosure firmware -> show enclosures (Revision)
