Flood Control Infrastructure (Retention pond) in Polangui, Albay

Retention ponds temporarily store a volume storm water runoff and discharge it at
controlled rate to prevent infrastructure and waterbodies from receiving too much water.

How it works:

Water is diverted to a wet retention pond by a network of underground pipes connecting

storm drains to the pond. The system allows for large amounts of water to enter the pond,
and the outlet lets out small amounts of water as needed to maintain the desired water
level.
Advantages:
 Cost less to implement than other flood control infrastructure
 Retention ponds are simple if space is provided
 Collects and improve water quality, can be used as an alternative source of
potable water
 Improved storm water collection and flood control
 New habitats are created, can be used for aquaculture and fisheries
 Can be used for recreational purposes, and for tourism
Disadvantages:
 Large areas of ground are needed
 Retention pond alone does not and cannot mitigate flood risk
 Flooding may occur if the design water levels are exceeded
 Can increase risk by providing a false sense of security and encouraging
settlements or economic activity in hazard-prone areas
