Shapefor Better Community
A Geospatial Hackathon
U-Inspire in a partnership with UNICEF are welcoming the Disaster Risk Reduction
month in October 2019. We are calling passionate teams to gather data, formulate
solutions and pitch ideas that could significantly improve preparedness for disasters to
make a resilient community. We also collaborate with UNITAR, UNESCO, BNPB,
BPBD West Java, BPBD Bandung District and our local partners Jaga Balai and Sky
Volunteer.
We would like to invite teams (4 members max 18-35 years old range) who have
interest related to geospatial analysis, disaster management and risk communication.
Multidisciplinary teams that have wide-ranging experience are highly regarded.
This is a fully funded event. Your accommodation and travel cost from cities in Java
island will be covered.
Rapid changes in social, economic, security and environmental conditions are
occurring at the global level, affecting national and regional level. Geospatial Big Data
can help us develop regionally-specific impactful solutions.
West Java is geologically and geographically diverse, coupled with severe conditions,
provide a unique set of challenges and risks unlike any other provinces in Indonesia.
This geospatial hackathon aims to address West Java’s most conflicting issues
specifically about Urban Flood and Earthquake.
Urban Floods and Earthquake in Bandung
Within a year, residents on the banks of the Citarum River, especially residents in
Baleendah, Majalaya and Dayeuh Kolot Subdistricts, Bandung Regency, could
experience flooding about ten times. Repeated flooding in this area requires
comprehensive handling of the Citarum river basin. Baleendah area and its
surroundings are densely populated settlements and industries. The topographical
condition is concave with shallow base of the Citarum River due to sedimentation,
making the population affected by the flood reached 22,105 households.
The soil characteristic of Subdistricts in Bandung River Basin are soft, so it can amplify
earthquake shake. Faults that have not been identified will further aggravate the
earthquake in the Bandung Basin because small faults will also produce small scale
earthquakes. The size of the earthquake shaking is determined by the distance from
the earthquake epicenter and the soil type. One of the main earthquake threats is the
Lembang Fault, that extends 29 kilometers from east to west from Ngamprah District,
Cisarua, Parongpong, to Lembang or its point from Batu Loceng to Padalarang
(Ciburuy).
Reflecting on past events, Bandung was struck by an earthquake measuring 6.5 to 7 in
the 15th century and in 60 BC. The earthquake was believed to have been triggered by
the active Lembang fault. The characteristics of the Lembang Fault are active faults,
meaning that the Lembang Fault can have an earthquake potential and will repeat itself
in the same place.
Scope
The goal of this event is to find innovative solutions that fully take into consideration
the needs of local beneficiaries, in this case is Jaga Balai and BPBD Bandung District.
Solutions will be based on integration of various data sources, including geospatial
data, in various forms, such as software/apps, data visualization, and/or integrating
other disaster platforms.
The Challenge
Flooding and Earthquake in Bandung are complex. Let data and creativity guide you to
create a compelling geospatia-based solution to inspire the future of risk
communication.
Create your own Geospatial Solution to address:
1. Enhancing city, school and community resilience toward flood and earthquake risk
2. Reducing disruptions to public facility and critical infrastructure
3. Improving information management and build a unique way to disseminate it.
Register your team and submit your idea before September 27, 2019.
Using our template, please write a description of your idea, keep it short and straight to
the point. And tell us stories about your process to a blog or a web page.
OUTPUT FORMATS
We are actively looking for practical solutions that may take on different forms
including (but not limited to) the following:
● Software/Apps solutions ● Data Visualization solutions ● Integrating other
platforms
