What is art for?

1. How does the title “Space is process” reflect upon ideas of Olafur
Eliasson’s work?
a. I think “Space is process” means that each person’s perception of
space is different and it is a process because it continually changes
depending on what is in the space or from where the viewer is
seeing the space. This reflects on Olafur Eliasson’s ideas because
his pieces are continually changing. Either they physically move in
some way or appear to change based on the viewer’s viewpoint.
Therefore the viewer becomes involved in the changing process of
space, the viewer becomes inclusive with the space instead of
excluded from it.

2a) Read the responses to the question “What is art for” by prominent people in
the art world. http://theartnewspaper.com/comment/159718/
Which opinion resonates with your idea about art? How so? Explain.
a. Chris Dercon, the director or Tate Modern in London’s opinion about the
function of art in society resonates the most with my idea of art. He
comments on the widening divide between the economic value and the
cultural value of art. I definitely agree with his view, especially having
after having seen the documentary about the Barnes’ Collection, which
gave a perfect example of how art’s cultural value is being outshined by
its economic value. Barnes wanted his collection to be an institution for
learning, but after his death opposing parties were only concerned with
being in charge of the multi-billion dollar collection. Therefore, I think
Dercon is correct in saying that we need to get back to the cultural value
of art, because that is what challenges societal norms and changes the
world.

2b) What do you think “art is for,”, or, what “should art be for?” Which kind of
art do you think matters? Research an artist, or an artwork, and explain why and
how it matters to you.
b. I think art has many different purposes in today’s world. It can be used to
instruct, to document history, to record emotions, or for any other
purpose a person can think of. Art depends on the individual. What is art
to one person may not be considered art by another. I think all art matters
to some extent, because it shows a progression of humanity throughout
history. I find Leonardo da Vinci to be very fascinating. He was so
revolutionary in his ideas and techniques for the time he lived in. He was
looking to the future with his ideas even though some were not feasible
during his lifetime. I also admire how diverse da Vinci was. He was not
just an artist; he had a wide range of skills and did not limit himself.

3. Do you think, you look at art or artworks now differently than when you first
answered the question “what is art?” Why or why not?
a. I think I am more appreciative of art now than I was when we first
answered the question “what is art?” Previously, I had not necessarily
looked for a deeper meaning in art. Before, I would look at an artwork
and think it to be a nice work of art, but not look into any further than
that. Seeing the processes of some of these artists has given me a greater
understanding of the process that goes beyond the aesthetic appearance of
works of art.
