CHAPTER 1 2

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

To be a Mechanical Engineer one must have a stable support while

studying specifically parental support. But if the parent is against to what course

being toke up, is still be able to be a Mechanical Engineer? Mechanical

Engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the construction and use

of a machine. They are also the one who creates the machine that provide the

needs of humans in every aspect. Because of engineers we experiencing

innovation in our generation specially in terms of technology and machines.

Therefore, what are the things to consider to be successful Mechanical

Engineer without the support coming from the parents? This research will help

a lot of students to know how to pursue the career as a Mechanical Engineer

without a support coming from the parents specially during studying.

Mechanical Engineering is one of the most difficult courses to take

therefore without the support of the parent, looking in the situation it seems to

be more difficult knowing that you will taking a very serious path without the

supervision of the parent. There are things that can help a student pursuing

their career without the support coming from the parents.

According to warwick.ac.uk, they help estranged student to pursue they

career. They define estranged student not having connection with their both

biological parents. They providing estranged student accommodation in terms 3

of giving funds in the career the student will going to take. The funds they are

using are from having a campaign to help the estranged student who want to

pursue their career.

Background of the Study

Family is the single most important influence in a child's life. From their

first moments of life, children depend on parents and family to protect them and

provide for their needs. Parents and family form a child's first relationships.

They are a child's first teachers and act as role models in how to act and how

to experience the world around them. By nurturing and teaching children during

their early years, families play an important role in making sure children are

ready to learn when they enter school. Children thrive when parents are able

to actively promote their positive growth and development. Every parent knows

that it's sometimes difficult to do this important work without help, support, and

additional resources.

Parental involvement is known to be linked with improved behavior,

regular attendance and positive attitudes. In addition, being involved shows

your child you care about his or her education and schooling. That in itself can

make children appreciate the importance of education and help them to

understand that what they are doing has a purpose. Parental involvement

provides a support network for children, which is particularly important when

they face academic hurdles or other challenges with friendships or extra-

University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

curricular activities. It also means you know where your child's education 4
journey is going and are able to be part of the highs and lows along the way.

As a result, children whose parents stay involved are more likely to have higher

self-esteem, be disciplined, have more self-motivation and tend to achieve

better grades, regardless of their ethnic, social or racial backgrounds.

Therefore, in terms of studying specifically in studying Mechanical

engineering a child need a prior knowledge and support coming from the family.

It is an essential to support a child in studying, it can help the child to

express itself with confidence, it can motivate the child to pursue their dreams,

they can help the child in discovering the things they need to know, how to

behave themselves, how to analyze things, how to solve their problem in

studying and specifically, the financial support. As it being said it is very

important for the child to receive a support coming from the family or the parents

in any circumstances.

Theoretical Framework

This study is supported with a self-made theory that is based in a theory

of the Hierarchy of Needs by Abraham Maslow.

Maslow first presented his idea of hierarchy of needs in his 1943 paper

"A Theory of Human " and his consequent book Inspiration and Identity. This

pecking order proposes that individuals are spurred to satisfy fundamental

needs previously proceeding onward to other, further developed necessities.

University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

There are five distinct dimensions of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. How 5

about we investigate Maslow's needs beginning at the most reduced

dimension, which are known as physiological needs.

Maslow's pecking order is frequently shown as a pyramid. The least

dimensions of the pyramid are comprised of the most fundamental needs, while

the most perplexing needs are at the highest point of the pyramid.

Needs at the base of the pyramid are fundamental physical necessities

including the requirement for nourishment, water, rest, and warmth. When

these lower-level needs have been met, individuals can proceed onward to the

following dimension of requirements, which are for wellbeing and security.

The researchers have made a theory based on Maslow’s theory. In the

Hierarchy of Needs theory of Abraham Maslow there is a pyramid that consist

of the five basic needs of a person which is indicated in the previous paragraph.

Therefore, the researchers conclude that as a student they also need to have

their five basic needs that can help them in their studies.

First one on the lowest part of the pyramid of Maslow’s theory is

Physiological needs, students also must have their Physiological need such as

shelter, food, water, and rest to get productive in studying. The second one is

Safety needs, student must have a safety and security to ensure that they have

a safe environment while they are studying. Third one is Belongingness and
University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

love needs, student must have belonging ness and love between their family 6
and parents. To be motivated in studying and pursuing their career their family

must support them in any circumstances. It is also important to have support

from the family and parents to build the persons self-esteem which leads to the

fourth basic need, Esteem needs. Student confidence is an Important factor in

education, because if a student losses self-esteem the may lose motivation in

learning or even in pursuing their career. Lastly is Self-actualization, it is the

fulfillment of talent and potential. Self-actualized represent growth and

development to fulfill the highest dream of person. Just like a student, they need

to grow and develop to achieve their career goal.

It is really important to a student to have those five basic needs in their

life as they study and pursue their career in life. In those basic needs they will

be motivated to keep pursuing their dream career.

Review of Related Literature and Studies 11

1. Importance of Parental Support in Education

Watchmen has an extraordinary opportunity to impact their kids in academic

achievement anyway the impact may not be mind boggling as the others.

Others have said that the impact of the watchmen is modest yet continue to

verify that the companion impact is in like way unassuming. It demonstrates

that the two watchman has the most impact in an adolescent's educational

achievement. Given that the guardians have a compelled effect over the kid's

companions an activity chance to utilize those components to help tyke,

including the youth's academic achievement. (Shute, V.J., et al. 2011)

1.1.2 Parental Support and Parental Involvement

With everything taken into account, this examination has both theoretical

and rational proposals in the activity that gatekeepers play on the educational

self-sufficiency and certainty of their adolescent. Parental help and parental

incorporation are stand-out building up that both predict a young's academic

self-practicality and certainty. Getting energetic help and dynamic relationship

from watchmen are comparatively basic to a tyke's assurance, saw worth, and

autonomy in school. (Ruholt, R., et al. 2015)

1.1.3 Support and Protection

Support and protection are two essential parental capacities. Knowing

the distinction, when to give which, and how to do as such are major hindrances

for guardians of on edge kids. This section investigates the contrasts between
University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

the two jobs and shows valuable methods for empowering strong child rearing 12
when overprotection has turned into the standard. An advisor occupied with

working with the guardians of an on edge or frightful kid can frequently utilize

the qualifications as a beginning stage for propelling an effective and

community-oriented course of treatment. An essential component of help that

separates it from both defensive and requesting child rearing is the promise to

continuous advancement and to the valuation for fractional achievements.

(Thorslund, K., et al. 2018)

1.2 Parental Support

On the off chance that hazardous associations with guardians are a

scholarly hazard factor amid youthfulness, at that point nonparental wellsprings

of help (e.g., companions, kin, and educators) might be fields of solace that

advance instructive versatility notwithstanding such hazard. In a progression of

basic models utilizing the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, the

creators found that nonparental connections are bound to be straightforwardly

connected with scholarly conduct than to associate with parent-related hazard.

Defensive communications happen just among specific subgroups. For

instance, cozy associations with educators and inclusion with companions

secure against parent-related scholarly hazard among Asian American youths,

while support from companions works likewise for more youthful young ladies.

In different subgroups, parental and nonparental connections interface

however not in a defensive manner. These examples show the perplexing

University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

interaction of formative biology and bigger social structures amid the immature 13
phase of life just as the setting explicit nature of flexibility. (Crosnoe, R., et al.

2004)

1.2.1 Parental Support in the Philippines

Parent incorporation put a significant activity in the guidance of children and

moreover the responsibility it accommodates the overall population.

Notwithstanding the way that, there are undertakings and current practice on

parental incorporation in the Philippines, national plans and framework are not

in put to help Early Childhood Education. Bits of knowledge shows the low

element of examining capacity of children, contemplates reveal the opening in

understanding PI in gatekeepers' perspective, and the Philippine EFA targets

endorses to expand access of parental affiliation programs in each barangay.

Works on parental incorporation are basically on American and western

composition which are of remarkable favorable position around there.

Regardless, it yields impacts which ought to be contextualized. Yet particular

researchers express its hugeness and productive results, there are as yet a

couple of examinations that conspicuous the limits in progressing and doing it.

A part of the examinations did not consider gatekeepers' perspectives, while

some have vernacular and social containments in data gathering. There are

miscommunications between the schools and gatekeepers and exhibits the

unmistakable points of view of each side. This gap gets an imperative section

the headway of a structure that will upgrade the association among

University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School

gatekeepers and schools, and informational consequences of youths. In like 14

manner, ventures and activities should revolve around the developed models

just as in social factors that impacts the complete progression of a youth.

Guidance alone can't thoroughly address the issues of the changing society

and the school alone can't fulfill absolutely what is required and imperative for

the preparation. For a far reach guidance, watchmen need to accept a solid

employment in preparing and Philippine government must think about the

foundation of a chamber or approach for family endeavors. (Bartolome, M., et

al. 2017)

1.3 Role of Parents on Childs Education

The job of individual persuasive attributes and ecological social backings in

school results was inspected in a longitudinal investigation of 100 ethnic

minority original understudies. Individual/profession related inspiration to go to

school in the fall was a positive indicator and absence of companion bolster

was a negative indicator of school change the accompanying spring. Absence

of friend bolster likewise anticipated lower spring GPA. (Dennis 2013)

2. Effects of Parental Support in Childs Education

The significant contribution of guardians in youngsters' tutoring can improve

the instructive procedure. Guardians can contribute bits of knowledge and

information that supplement the expert abilities of schools' staffs in manners

that fortify scholarly and social projects. Nonetheless, for parent contribution

activities to be fruitful, they ought to be a piece of a relevantly engaged school

University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

enhancement process intended to make positive connections that help 15

youngsters' absolute improvement.

Parent inclusion programs that are established in conventional bureaucratic

and resolute school conditions are less inclined to yield positive outcomes than

those that are a piece of a progressively communitarian authoritative structure.

In our work, we include guardians at all dimensions of school life, through

general help of schools' instructive projects, dynamic interest in day by day

exercises, and in school arranging and the board. Guardians cooperate with

schools' staffs to set up scholastic and social objectives and to create and

execute extensive school designs. In any case, guardians don't supplant or

challenge the specialist of principals and their staffs. They give viewpoints on

issues that serve the best enthusiasm of kids. (Comer, J., et al. 1991)

2.1 Effects of Parental Absence on Childs Education in the Philippines

This paper utilizes longitudinal information from the Philippines to

dissect determinants of kids' time portion. The estimation strategy considers

both the synchronization of time use choices, by taking into consideration

connection of residuals crosswise over time utilizes, and inconspicuous family

heterogeneity, through the incorporation of family settled impacts. Imperatively,

this enhanced estimation technique prompts unexpected outcomes in

comparison to while applying the strategies recently utilized in the writing.

Young ladies experience the ill effects of the nonattendance of their

mom with a decrease in time spent in school that is proportionate to dropping

University of Perpetual Help System DALTA

out totally. This impact is significantly bigger while controlling for family unit 16
unobservable than when not. Young men increment time spent taking a shot at

market related exercises because of a missing dad, in spite of the fact that this

time seems to leave relaxation as opposed to class or doing family unit tasks.

Land proprietorship considerably increment the time young men spend on

school exercises, while leasing land diminishes the time young ladies spend on

school. At long last, there does not have all the earmarks of being a

considerable exchange off between time spent on school and work, either in

the market or at home. (Portner, C., 2014)

2.2 Effects of Parents Involvement on Improvement of The Childs

Education

This examination inspected the capacity of a hypothetical model to

anticipate types and dimensions of parental association amid the basic and

center school years. Indicator factors incorporated guardians' inspirational

convictions about contribution, view of solicitations to inclusion from others, and

saw life setting factors. Investigations of reactions from 853 guardians of first

through sixth level understudies took a crack at an ethnically differing

metropolitan government funded educational system in the mid-southern

United States uncovered that demonstrate develops anticipated huge parts of

change in guardians' home-and school-based association notwithstanding

while controlling for family financial status. The prescient intensity of explicit

model builds varied for basic and center school guardians. Results are talked

about as far as research on parental contribution and school practice. (Green, 17

C.L., et al. 2007)

2.3 Effects of Parental Support in the First Year College Students

The goal of the analysis was to expand he knowledge of the role of the

supportive relationship in their adjustment in entering the first year of college.

There is a total of 22 second-year student who had a GPA of 2.00 or higher

had reflect their experiences during their first year of college. The student has

shared the support they received from their parents from adjustment in the first

year of college. However, some of the support become a hindered to their

adjustment. Understanding that the both factors can help or hinder the student

in their adjustment it is useful for their development to evaluate activities and

services aimed at facilitating students t their adjustment in a new environment.

(Yazedjian, A., et al. 2007)

2.4 Parental Support on the Academic Performance and Self Concept of

the Student

This examination inspects the effect of instructive help given by the

guardians on the scholastic accomplishment and on the self-idea of grade 4

state funded school understudies. The points of this examination were (a) to

inspect the linkage between scholarly accomplishment and instructive support

gave to the youngster at home and, (b) to decide if this support specifically or

by implication impacts tyke's self-idea. The test understudies who have or have

not parental help were looked at on two measures, (a) the yearly school result
University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

report and, (b) oneself idea scale. The self-idea was estimated twice for 18
example prior to one month of yearly school examination and following one

month of declaration of yearly outcomes. The discoveries of the investigation

uncovered that guardians' commitment to their youngsters' training has a

steady and beneficial outcome on scholarly accomplishment and on the self-

idea. (Chohan, B., et al. 2010)

3. Experiences of Student Studying without Parental Support

Donald depict himself as a dark, Indian, and a Dominican individual. He

went two secondary school in San Francisco and Los Angeles. His first school

is extraordinary for him in spite of the fact that it is testing yet the instructors in

that school was worry about him and his welfare. Be that as it may, he left San

Francisco because of family issue and move in to Los Angeles in a non-

permanent family. He went to a school that he portrays as an awful school, he

didn't realize there and before long quit. Unflinching, he had earned a GED and

enter to a school call Cerritos Community College, He began living individually

at 21 years old and resolved to get a degree in school. (Engstrom, C., 2010)

3.1 Estranged Student

Prior to beginning college, I had been alienated from my folks for about

five years. Be that as it may, I didn't understand the "specialized" term for my

family circumstance until I started to round out my understudy fund application.

Due to the circumstance I was in, applying for account was troublesome and
University of Perpetual Help System DALTA

included sending off different letters and proof about my living circumstance. 19
This caused issues as the purposes behind my irritation were diverse for each

parent – my dad has never been a major part of my life and my mom passed

away when I was 14. Contrasted and other alienated understudies, I have been

fortunate and had the help of my maternal grandparents who let me live with

them. Lamentably, my grandparents were not able help my understudy fund

application and that made things progressively troublesome. (Fallon, C., 2017)

3.2 Experience of Students Studying with Parental Support

This examination is unmistakable in that guardians' observations were

used related to understudies' discernments in researching science classroom

learning situations among Grade 4 and 5 understudies in South Florida. The

What Is Happening In this Class? (WIHIC) survey was adjusted for youthful

understudies and their folks and managed to 520 understudies and 120

guardians. Information investigations bolstered the WIHIC's factorial

legitimacy, inner consistency unwavering quality and capacity to separate

between the view of understudies in various classrooms.

The two understudies and guardians favored a more positive classroom

condition than the one saw to be really present, yet impact sizes for real favored

contrasts were bigger for guardians than for understudies. Affiliations were

found between some learning condition measurements (particularly

undertaking introduction) and understudy results (particularly mentalities).

University of Perpetual Help System DALTA

Subjective strategies proposed that understudies and guardians were 20

commonly happy with the classroom condition, however that understudies

would favor more examination while guardians would lean toward more

educator support. The examination gives a spearheading see how guardians

and understudies see the science learning condition and opens the route for

further learning condition ponders including the two guardians and

understudies. (Allen, D., et al. 2007)

3.2.1 Alignment of Parental Support to Students

This examination is unmistakable in that guardians' observations were

used related to understudies' discernments in researching science classroom

learning situations among Grade 4 and 5 understudies in South Florida. The

The examination gives a spearheading see how guardians and

learning condition ponders including the two guardians and understudies.

4. Financial problems among the Students

By far most – 94% – of the understudies included required outside subsidizing

like understudy advances, bursaries and grants to help their college life. Some

had even enlisted for degrees without having subsidizing affirmed – so their

days were devoured by stresses over account.

A large portion of these understudies can't depend on their families for

monetary help. Guardians' employments impact the measure of money related

help that they can offer their youngsters. In the examination test, just 24.45%

of dads and 22.2% of moms had proficient occupations and could offer their

kids some assistance with cash.

Altogether 41% of the members got some type of budgetary help from their

folks, 53% depended on outer subsidizing – 10% got understudy credits and

43% got understudy bursaries – and 6% paid for their very own examinations.
University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School

No matter how you look at it, the understudies' principle need was to 22
frantically verify monetary guide before concentrating on scholastic exercises.

Just once they had the capacity to manage this hindrance, they move center to

their examinations. (Pather, S. 2015)

4.1.1 Financial Support

You should be eager to go to/acknowledge work that is disconnected to

your sort of degree. In the event that the main occupation you can get right

presently is flipping burgers, you have to figure out how to flip burgers! It's

straightforward work. It will give you a check. It can help bolster you (recall, not

at all like me you have a family that is giving you a spot to live, running water,

power, and so on). Flipping burgers will purchase your nourishment, pay for

your clothing, purchase your basic needs and toiletries. Even pay your lease

should you choose to move out (be a flat mate, lease a room, and so on).

You are right in your conviction that guardians should bolster their

youngsters, yet you are wrong in the way in which you trust they ought to help

you. (Huff, Y. 2017)

4.1.2 Finances in school

Funds are influencing understudies' scholarly understanding, with

capacity to find a new line of work as a major factor in choosing a noteworthy,

as indicated by the current year's National Survey of Student Engagement. The

subsidence might be finished, yet as educational cost and obligation keep on

University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

rising, numerous understudies are still under extraordinary strain to bring home 23
the bacon – and for a few, it's to the detriment of scholarly interests. Around 60

percent of full-time seniors who work over 20 hours of the week said it meddled

with their scholastic execution, however similarly the same number of said they

every now and again investigated working more hours to take care of

expenses. Further, 32 percent of first-year understudies and 36 percent of

seniors said money related concerns meddled with their scholastic execution.

Also, 27 percent of rookies and 34 percent of seniors said they "frequently" or

"all the time" decided not to buy required scholastic materials due to the

expense.

Maybe it's additionally not astounding, at that point, that when solicited

whether an arrangement from components "considerably" impacted their

decision of major, 55 percent of seniors said "yes" to being able to get a new

line of work (with more minority than white understudies saying as much), and

52 percent noted potential compensation. About 59 percent indicated

profession portability or progression, and 41 percent said potential for the

executive positions. In any case, scholastic intrigue and individual gifts won out,

with 89 percent of seniors replying in the certifiable to both. (Grasgreen, A.,

2012)
University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

4.2 Working student 24

The raised expenses of school educational cost require numerous

understudies to work while going to class so as to pay for educational cost,

transportation, school supplies and everyday costs. Understudies have the

alternative to deal with or off-grounds. Kid and family improvement first year

recruit Diana Ramirez has worked off-grounds about 20 hours out of each week

since fall 2016. She said her activity last semester as a character entertainer

at SeaWorld was simpler than her present place of employment as a barista at

Teavana. (Carter, M. 2017)

5. Mental Health in Studying

Psychological well-being among college understudies speaks to an

essential and developing general wellbeing worry for which epidemiological

information are required. A Web‐based review was regulated to an irregular

example at a huge state funded college with a statistic profile like the national

understudy populace. Burdensome and uneasiness issue were evaluated with

the Patient Health Questionnaire (R. L. Spitzer, K. Kroenke, J. B. W. Williams,

and the Patient Health Questionnaire Primary Care Study Group, 1999).

Nonresponse loads were built with managerial information and a brief

nonresponding review. The reaction rate was 56.6% (N = 2,843). The

evaluated pervasiveness of any burdensome or tension issue was 15.6% for

students and 13.0% for alumni understudies. Self-destructive ideation in the

University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

previous a month was accounted for by 2% of understudies. Understudies 25

announcing budgetary battles were at higher hazard for psychological well-

being issues (chances proportions = 1.6– 9.0). These discoveries feature the

need to address psychological well-being in youthful grown-up populaces,

especially among those of lower financial status. Grounds people group reach

over portion of youthful grown-ups and consequently speak to remarkable

chances to address emotional well-being issues in this critical age gathering.

(Eisenberg, D., et al. 2010)

6. Motivation

We as a whole have dreams, yet how regularly do we make them worked

out?

A significant number of us, when youthful, have extraordinary dreams. We don't

enable conditions to restrain how far we dream. We feel excited, prepared to

overcome the world. Be that as it may, as we grow somewhat more seasoned,

and subsequent to hitting impediments and disappointments, we begin to quit

putting stock in us, and lose our excitement, confidence and aspiration. We

sink into unremarkable life, trudge on, and we either overlook our fantasies, or

they become simply dubious, weak wishes.

How often have individuals revealed to you that you will fail?

How frequently have individuals chuckled at your fantasies and endeavored to

dishearten you? Likely ordinarily. On the off chance that you abandon your
University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

fantasies, you probably won't be glad and regularly grumble about your life and 26
your condition. You may feel that life could be extraordinary in the event that

you didn't surrender. In the event that you abandon your fantasies, you won't

carry on with the interesting life you needed when you were more youthful. In

the event that youngsters are permitted to dream, grown up individuals can

dream as well, regardless of what others individuals state. On the off chance

that you trust that you can succeed, and don't tune in to any individual who

says something else, with determination, control and confidence in yourself you

can reach far. (Sasson, R., 2017)

6.1 Family Motivation

Supporting one's family is a noteworthy motivation behind why

numerous individuals work, yet shockingly little research has analyzed the

ramifications of family inspiration. Drawing on speculations of prosocial

inspiration and activity ID, we recommend that family inspiration builds work

execution by improving vitality and lessening pressure, and it is particularly

imperative when inborn inspiration is inadequate. Overview and journal

information gathered over numerous times focuses in a Mexican maquiladora

by and large help our model. In particular, we find that family inspiration

upgrades work execution when inherent inspiration is low—to some degree by

giving vitality, yet not by diminishing pressure. We presume that supporting a

family gives a ground-breaking wellspring of inspiration that can help execution

in the work environment, offering important ramifications for research on

inspiration and the elements of work and family commitment. (Menges, J., et 27
al. 2016)

Synthesis

Involvement of the parents in any kind of situation is important for a child

that needed the supervision of their guardians specifically in studying. Parental

association is frequently observed as a foundation in a youngster's instruction.

It can have an impressive effect to your kid's school life, both in scholastic

achievement and when all is said in done satisfaction at school.

Parental help administrations help youngsters live with or keep up

positive associations with their folks, relatives, and network underpins. Parental

help laborers help guardians manufacture and consolidate positive child

rearing abilities into their everyday child rearing and family schedules, and

underscore the significance of play, school, and network contribution.

The Family Center firmly underpins keeping youngsters with their close

family, when it is sheltered to do as such. On the off chance that that is beyond

the realm of imagination, we bend over backward to guarantee they are set

with a relative or potentially have customary and continuous access to their

loved ones. We think keeping youngsters in their locale and schools is basic

for lessening the injury and change they experience. We additionally help

families associate with network assets so they can be upheld in the midst of

need, presently and later on.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study is designed as a qualitative study, aiming to know the

experiences of mechanical engineers studying without the support coming from

their parents. Cresswell (1994) defines qualitative research such as an analysis

of understanding a social or human problem, based on building a complex,

comprehensive picture, formed with words, reporting specific data, and

conducted in legitimate surroundings.

Among the types of qualitative research, there is a type of research that

needed to consider, in this study the type of qualitative research that being used

is a phenomenological study. A phenomenological study is type of research

which is used to describe how human beings experience a certain phenomenon

it is also defined. According to Cresswell (2003) the fundamental goal of the

approach is to arrive at a description of the nature of the particular

phenomenon.it is an attempt to set aside favoritism and preconceived suspicion

about human experiences, feelings, and responses to a particular situation.

Population and Sampling

The researchers conducted the/ data to respondents who are taking up

Mechanical Engineering that living around the common cities in Laguna and

Batangas.
University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

In this case the population for the study is all students taking up 30
Mechanical Engineer who have an experience studying without the support

coming from their parents, but some of them maybe on the edge of working

and may not be accessible for the research study. Therefore, accessible

population for this study will be students who taking up Mechanical Engineers

who meet the designated criteria and who are also available for the research

study. In this study the researchers need at least 5 up to 25 respondents that

will be participating in this study.

In this study the sampling method that is used is a Snowball Sampling.

According to businessjargons, Snowball Sampling is a non-random sampling

technique wherein the respondent will refer another possible candidate as a

respondent of the study that has the same experiences that the study being

state.

Participants of the Study

In this type of study, the researchers include five participants who is

either a males or female, and the age limit is up to 20 to 30 years old who is

taking up Mechanical Engineering that have experienced studying with parents

not supporting it. Participants are randomly chosen from places in Laguna and

Batangas.

Research Instrument 31

The instrument that being used is a researcher-made interview

questionnaire to gather the needed data. The draft of the questionnaire was

drawn out based on the things that needed to know on the experiences of the

respondents. The parts of the interviewer questionnaire are having a question

that will identify the data needed to know in a particular situation that the

participants going through. The researchers used an open-ended question that

requires more though and more that a simple one-word answer. There are

exactly ten interview questions, three for each research question except the

second research question that includes four interview questions.

Validation of the Instrument

The practical research adviser proof-read and validated the research

instruments and specifically the research questions and interview questions.

After validating the interview questions, the research adviser gave permission

to proceed in gathering the needed data on the participants.

Data Gathering Procedure

To gather the data there are procedures that needed to considered by

the researchers. First is to create a letter of approval to be signed by the

principal and send it to every participant that will participate to the study. By

interviewing the participants, the researchers needed permission by the school

to have the participants knows that the information the researchers gathered

were not being use illegally in any circumstances. As the permission have been 32
given to gather the data, the researchers proceed in interviewing the selected

participants.

CHAPTER 3 33

PRESENTATION, INTERPRETATION, ANALYSIS

AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

FOR RESEARCH QUESTION NO. 1: How did the participants pursue

Mechanical Engineering even if their parents don’t support them?

Interview Question no. 1: Why did you take up Mechanical Engineering?

A. Influenced by the Others – 1 participant

“I took mechanical engineering because this triggered me that almost boys are

only getting this and because of friends influence.”

The researchers can deduce that in choosing a course for themselves

can be influenced by the others just like their friends. According to Urberg et al.

(2003), there are two stages of influence. The first one is a person is being

encourage or acquitted to do such things they like such as choosing a career

for them. And the second stage is conforming to the situation.

B. Personal Interest/Passion – 4 participants

“When I was a kid (at the age around 10?) dream ko na talaga aging

mechanical engineer. Kase lagi akong nag babasa ng mga books ng tito and

tita ko when they are still studying. And I was like “wtf?!! These stuffs r

amazing!!” gusto ko yung idea nang machines and all kaya ayon up until now

nagpursue ako sa Mech. Eng. kase I really want it.”

University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

“I took up mechanical engineering because my passion is towards machines 34

and everything related to them plus being a mechanical engineer sounds cool.”

“To pursue my dreams and also to make money so that I could help my

parents.”

“Gusto ko kasi siya. Actually, it is my 2nd choice my 1st choice is taking up law

pero due to financial problems ayon.”

The researchers can deduce that in making a career or choosing a

course for oneself is need to be a passion or personal interest. According to

Ginzberdg et al. (2003), that choosing a career is also influenced by young

person’s conceptualization of their ability, preferences and personal interests.

Interview Question no. 2: Why were your parents don’t support it?

A. Distance between places – 1 participant

“Because I will be far away with them. Cause I need to take a boarding house.”

The researchers can deduce that distance between the school and to a

home of a students can have a big effect in studying but due to determination

to learn a person is willing to walk in that distance. Disney (2005), a child’s

perception in studying can affect by distant schools. A person can lose interest

in studying but being encourage by the teachers a student encouraged to

pursue studying.
University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School

B. Parents against to it – 2 participants 35

“My parents want me to do bussiness kase mas mapapakinabangan ko daw

yun since may small business kame. Pinaliwanag ko sa kanila why I want to

pursue M.E. but yeah ang gusto nila talaga mag business ako para daw may

pagpatuloy nang family bussiness namin.”

“Because they thought that it may be too hard for me since they saw me as a

happy-go-lucky type of student.”

The researchers can deduce that parents have a big role in a childs

education. Either supporting it or against to it. According to Kohn (1963), there

are types of parent-child relationship when it comes to education. One reason

a parent againts to their childs decisions is for them to have a higher or greater

education.

C. Financial Problem – 2 participants

“Because they don’t have enough money.”

“Dad ko lang ang may ayaw sabi niya kasi sakin noong 4th year highschool

ako hindi na daw niya ako kayang pagaralin ng college kaya ako daw ang

humanap ng paraan kung gusto ko magcollege pero kung hindi daw mag

tricycle driver nadaw ako. Ang nanay ko naman walang trabaho that time.”

The researchers can deduce that a hindrance to a good career is lack

or money. Grasgreen (2012), many students still suffering expenses of

University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School

academic pursuit. In the National Survey of Student Engagement, it shows that 36

finances were a big hindrance in student’s academic activity.

Interview Question no. 3: What difficulties you encountered while pursuing

your course even if your parents don’t support it?

A. Financial Problem – 2 participants

“Lack of money for paying my other needs because of the part that i need to

pay my rental fee.”

“It is very difficult because we lack of money.”

The researchers can deduce that most of the participants having

difficulties in terms of money. Pather (2015), indicates that most of the student

can’t relay on their parents to provide their needs in academic there for some

of them are having financial stress.

B. Anxiety – 1 participant

“Personally, nagkaroon ako nang anxiety kasi ever since noong middle school

lagi akong may honors kase grade conscious ako and my parents also, and

then noong nag college nako yun nga sinuway ko sila kase I really want to be

an M.E. because it was really my dream. Doon na pumasok si anxiety kase sa

mindset ko di enough lahat ng ginawa ko nung mid. school para gumawa ako

ng decision on my own. Kase sinusunod ko naman sila dati then nung mag
University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

dedesisyon na ko para sa sarili ko they don’t listen to me. Kaya it is very difficult 37
for me.”

The researchers can deduce that having anxiety in studying can have a

big effect on your career path that it can lead to mental health issues. Gollust

et al. (2010), students reporting lack of parental support also a high risk for

mental health problems, conducted a survey that shows that need to address

mental health in young adults.

C. Dealing with the parents – 1 participant

“The most difficult part is convincing them that I really like the course and I am

ready to work hard to finish the course.”

The researchers can deduce that convincing the parents to support what

path the participants being choose can really be a hard time. Biliran (2018), in

convincing your parents to let you pursue your passion the person needed to

know what they really want and why they choose that passion. Understand why

they don’t like it for the person and try to make them understand you which

means to have talk with them. List down the opportunities and challenges of

pursuing your passion. And lastly make the parents believe in that person.

D. Working Student – 1 participant

“Napakahirap kasi nagwoworking student ako para lang masustentuhan ang

aking pagaaral.”
University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

The researchers can deduce that to pursue a dream a person is willing 38

to do everything for it. If a person really wants to pursue the course they want

even if the parents don’t support it, a person will do everything for it. According

to Carter (2017), as a student that is not supported by the parents can lead to

the student that need to work for their own in order to pay the tuition or other

expenses while studying.

FOR RESEARCH QUESTION NO. 2: What did the parents do in order to

discourage the participants in taking up Mechanical Engineer?

Interview Question no. 4: Did your parents limit you to do things that is related

to your course? If yes how did they limit you? If no why?

A. Yes – 1 participant

“Yes, nililimit ako nang parents ko parents ko example nalang is yung mga time

na may meet up kame para pagusapan yung mga gagawin namin lalo na pag

dating sa thesis bigla bigla akong pinag babantay nang coffee shop kase may

urgent meeting daw kahit wala naman. Kaya in the end through video call kame

nag memeeting”

The researchers can deduce that limiting the students in doing the things

related to their career might discourage them in pursuing their career.

According to Engstrom (2010) with limitation students can’t do the things they

need to do.
University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

B. No – 4 participants 39

“Hindi naman nila ako nililimitahan kase wala ngang pake sakin dad ko kaya

okay lang kame. Kaya nagagawa ko lahat nang gusto ko kapag related sa

course ko.”

“Ofcourse not.”

“No. they didn’t limit me.”

“My parents didn’t limit me to do things related to my course because I think

they figured out that they cannot change my mind about the course. They saw

my commitment and determination towards the course so they just let me do

the things related to mechanical engineering.”

The researchers can deduce that parents supporting their child in

everything they do can help them in accomplishing their studies. According to

Yazedjian (2007) parents can help them in accomplishing their studies by also

helping them in their thing that relates to their education.

Interview Question no. 5: Even if your parents don’t support the said course,

did they still support you financially? If not, what did you do to support yourself?

A. Supported – 4 participants

“Yes, even though we experienced lack of money they still support me

financially for my study.”

University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

“Yes, my parents still support me pero sa ibang bagay lalo na pag projects na 40
sobrang hirap hindi kase sinasabi nila ginusto ko daw yon kaya dapat

gumagawa ako ng paraan para matustusan ko sarili ko.”

“Thankfully, they still supported all the financial requirements of my course.”

“My parents support me in that course even if they have not enough money. I

am taking a lot of scholarship exams.”

The researchers can deduce that even if the parents don’t support their

child due to some reason, they can still support their child financially. Dennis

(2003), the role of parents in a child’s education is to ensure the needs of the

child and provide it.

B. Not Supported – 1 participant

“Sa Dad ko hindi talaga ako supportado maaga siya nagretire. Mother ko

naman wala nga siyang trabaho so sa tita ko ako humihingi ng tulong pag

walang wala na talaga. Nagtricycle driver at delivery boy ako para

masustentuhan ang pagaaral ko.”

The researchers can deduce that being not supported in a career choice

also leads to not being supported to any financial needs that involves the

situation. Huff (2017), a student is willing to accept or undergo a work to support

themselves even if the work is not suited to their interest. It can support you

temporarily therefore it can provide somethings that is really needed.

University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

Interview Questions no. 6: Did your decision in not obeying your parents have 41
an impact with your relationship with them?

A. No – 2 participants

“None, they accept it fast.”

“No.”

The researchers can deduce that having an unsupportive parent in a

career choice that the respondents pursue can have an effect in their

relationship. According to Keller (2004), a parent is a big influence to a child’s

career choice therefore, it is also indicated that a parent must support the

career choice of the child. It can help in building a good relationship in their

family.

B. Yes – 3 participants

“Masaabi kong oo kase simula nung sinuway ko sila naging aloof na sila sakin

pero I know na they still love me paden kase ngayon medyo nag kakaayos na

kame kase they’re seeing na okay naman yung course na kinuha ko.”

“At first, yes but after a year and a half everything went back to normal.”

“Nung una medyo masakit of what my dad said pero as time passes by okay

na sa akin and stable naman ang relationship namin ng family ko.”

The researchers can deduce that having an unsupportive parent and

obeying the things they want for the respondents can have an effect in their
University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

relationship. According Crosnoe et al. (2004), lack support to a career choice 42

a child choose can have a gap between the relationship of the parent and the

child.

Interview Question no. 7: In general, how did you cope up your struggles in

studying Mechanical Engineering without parental support?

A. Receiving help from the others – 1 participant

“My aunties and my other family member were helping me”

The researchers can deduce that in order to pursue a career without

support from the parents can receive help from others like relatives. According

to Salford University they are having a campaign for estranged student.

Therefore, they can study even if they don’t have parents or family to support

them. Which the researchers conclude that even if there are no parents who

can support a child in studying there is so many ways to gather help.

B. Motivating/Helping themselves – 4 participants

“Tinatry ko ng tinatry na ipaintindi sa parents ko kung bakit kailangan din nila

gustuhin yung bagay na gusto ko pero madalas I read books about the course

and I do blog doon ko nilalabas mga hinanakit ko.”

“Just studied hard, got high marks from all of my subjects and proved to them

that this is my passion and I can really finish the course.”

University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

“I didn’t take struggles seriously, I’m a positive person I could make better 43
solution.”

“Nagwoworking student ako tricycle driver, at delivery boy sa jollibee.”

The researchers can deduce that motivating oneself can really help the

participants in coping up the struggles they are facing. Deci et al. (1991), in

motivating oneself there must be things that needed to apply. It also indicates

that Self-determination theory can promote student interest in learning, and

valuing education. Therefore, motivating oneself is important specially in

situation like this.

FOR RESEARCH QUESTION NO. 3: What motivated the participants to

pursue the said course?

Interview Question no. 8: Was there a time you want to give up Mechanical

Engineering? Why or why not?

A. No – 5 participants

“No, because I’m enjoying in my course and all that in my head is that i need

to finish my study to help my family. So I will not give up.”

“No because I want to prove myself to my parents na kaya kong tuparin yung

dream ko na gusto ko. Na hindi lang basta to dream na hanggang pangarap

nalang kagaya noong bata pako.”

University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

“No, because being a mechanical engineer is my dream. Problems may come 44

here and there but I believe in my dream and I am confident that God is always

by my side.”

“None, because this is my dream.”

“Hindi, hirap na talaga ako mag working student konti nalang bat ko pa ba

isusuko ito? Hindi naman ako magpapakahirap nang ganto at hindi ko rin

susuwayin magulang ko kung susuko nalang ako basta basta.”

The researchers can deduce that in pursuing a person’s desired career

they must not give up and continue in pursuing it. According to Sasson (2000),

if a person really wants to achieve something it I never too late to achieve it

and if a person gives up on their dream, they might not be happy and star

complaining about their life and environment.

Interview Question no. 9: What was your greatest motivation in pursuing this

career?

A. Family – 5 participants

“My family, I want to change the life we have right now.”

“Pamilya ko padin kait ganto nangyari samin. Kase I want to help them kahit

hindi na sa bussines namin and I want to be a well-known M.E. I want to have

a name in this field.”

University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

“To give back to my parents, make my friends proud and to prove all of doubters 45
wrong.”

“My family and also my dreams and of course Lord.”

“Motivation ko is "makakatapos ako ng pag-aaral kailangan ko to hindi

pwedeng hindi ako matatapos" yan ang sinabi ko sa sarili ko. Kasi ayokong

matulad sa mga tumanda na sa pila ng tricycle gusto ko din mabigyan nang ng

magandang buhay pamilya ko.”

The researchers can deduce that all of the participants were motivated

by their family even if their parents don’t support them. Menges (2016) people

tend to find that family motivation enhances the capability of a person to look

up to their dreams.

Interview Question no. 10: Now, do you have any regrets in taking up

Mechanical Engineering? Why or why not?

A. None – 5 participants

“None, because it can really help me and my family in the future”

“I don’t have any regrets kase I really want this career so why regretting in

pursuing it?”

“None, because I am really enjoying this course/career.”

“Of course not. This is my dream.”

University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

“Wala akong regrets sa pagkuha ng ME, ang masasabi ko lang na regret is 46

yung grades ko. Dahil nga nagttrabaho ako habang nag-aaral hindi ako

masyadong nakapagfocus sa pagaaral kulang palagi yung oras sa akin noon

kasi nga nagworking student ako.”

The researchers can deduce that in pursuing the desired career of a

person there is no regret in taking it up even if the parents don’t support it.

According to Landis (2005) “There is no better time than now to pursue your

passion”. she also indicates that in pursuing a passion or dream it can make.

CHAPTER 4

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND

RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary of Findings

The salient findings of the study are as follows:

1. The participants that happened to taking up Mechanical Engineering

were influence by their friends and also that is their personal choice and

passion in their life.

2. The participants were not supported by their parents due to distance

between the school and their home. Also, their parents don’t want them to

pursue the course because one of the parents of the respondents what them

to pursue other course and the other parents don’t believe on what their child

can do. Lastly having problem with the finances that needed to pay in studying 47
or pursuing the said course.

3. The difficulties that the participants encountered were lack of money

to pursue the said course, second is having anxiety that one of the respondents

is struggling in proving themselves to their parents, third is how to deal their

parents to let them pursue their career. And lastly is working while studying, it

is one of the difficulties they encountered and in the situation like that the

respondents might struggle in their academics. Not having enough time to

study might affects their academics.

4. One from the participants were not limited by their parents because

their parents understand that they need to do such things that is related to their

course. And most of the participants were being limited to do those things that

is related course by their parents but even if they were limited to do the things

that is related to their course they are still determined to pursue it.

5. Most of the participants received a financial support from their parents

even if their parents were against it. And one of the respondents was not

supported due to their parent retirement and don’t have money to support the

respondents

6. Disobeying a parent on what career a child is choosing can have an

affect between them. Most of the participants that disobeyed their parents have
University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

effects on their relationship temporarily. Two of the respondents don’t affect 48

their relationship between their parents and their parents.

7. The participants cope up their struggles in parents doesn’t support

them by receiving help from relatives in terms of financial and motivating or

helping themselves by doing things that can help them being motivated.

8. All of the participants didn’t give up on their dreams because they

really want to pursue it and to prove themselves to their parents.

9. The participants greatest motivation was their family. Even if they

have an unsupportive parent, they still considered their family as their greatest

motivation.

10. All of the participants didn’t regret pursuing Mechanical Engineering

because they know that their choice can help them in the future and also this

career is their dream therefore, they didn’t regret taking it.

Conclusions

1. The researchers can conclude that the participants pursued

Mechanical Engineering with the help of influence by their friends and their

personal interest in pursuing it. Also, they relay themselves in their difficulties

while pursuing the said course; they used their difficulties as one of their

motivation in pursuing the said course

University of Perpetual Help System DALTA
Senior High School
Calamba Campus

2. The researchers can conclude that the parents of the participants 49

discouraged them by not supporting the needs of the participants, also as the

participants disobeyed their parents had an effect on their relationship as family

but the participants cope up on their struggles by receiving help from their

relatives and by doing things that can motivate them to continue in pursuing the

said course.

3. The researchers can conclude that the participants were motivated to

pursue the said course even if the parents don’t support them by not giving up

on their dreams even if too many hindrances cross to their lives and one of the

greatest motivations of them was their family, they want to pursue this career

to help them in the future also to fulfill their dream. Lastly even if they disobey

their parents, they didn’t regret pursuing their career because they are holding

a great reason to still pursue their dreams.

Recommendations

After drawing the conclusions, the researchers enumerate here the

recommendations or suggestions offered by the study:

1. Students. The researchers recommend that students must do things

that can help them pursue their dream even if the means of it is to work for

themselves and not lose hope in their dream career even if many hindrances

cross their life as a student.
