Introduction
To be a Mechanical Engineer one must have a stable support while
studying specifically parental support. But if the parent is against to what course
being toke up, is still be able to be a Mechanical Engineer? Mechanical
Engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the construction and use
of a machine. They are also the one who creates the machine that provide the
needs of humans in every aspect. Because of engineers we experiencing
innovation in our generation specially in terms of technology and machines.
Therefore, what are the things to consider to be successful Mechanical
Engineer without the support coming from the parents? This research will help
a lot of students to know how to pursue the career as a Mechanical Engineer
without a support coming from the parents specially during studying.
Mechanical Engineering is one of the most difficult courses to take
therefore without the support of the parent, looking in the situation it seems to
be more difficult knowing that you will taking a very serious path without the
supervision of the parent. There are things that can help a student pursuing
their career without the support coming from the parents.

Background of the Study
Family is the single most important influence in a child's life. From their
first moments of life, children depend on parents and family to protect them and
provide for their needs. Parents and family form a child's first relationships.
They are a child's first teachers and act as role models in how to act and how
to experience the world around them. By nurturing and teaching children during
their early years, families play an important role in making sure children are
ready to learn when they enter school. Children thrive when parents are able
to actively promote their positive growth and development. Every parent knows
that it's sometimes difficult to do this important work without help, support, and
additional resources.
Parental involvement is known to be linked with improved behavior,
regular attendance and positive attitudes. In addition, being involved shows
your child you care about his or her education and schooling. That in itself can
make children appreciate the importance of education and help them to
understand that what they are doing has a purpose. Parental involvement
provides a support network for children, which is particularly important when
they face academic hurdles or other challenges with friendships or extra-

curricular activities. It also means you know where your child's education 4
journey is going and are able to be part of the highs and lows along the way.
As a result, children whose parents stay involved are more likely to have higher
self-esteem, be disciplined, have more self-motivation and tend to achieve
better grades, regardless of their ethnic, social or racial backgrounds.
Therefore, in terms of studying specifically in studying Mechanical
engineering a child need a prior knowledge and support coming from the family.
It is an essential to support a child in studying, it can help the child to
express itself with confidence, it can motivate the child to pursue their dreams,
they can help the child in discovering the things they need to know, how to
behave themselves, how to analyze things, how to solve their problem in
studying and specifically, the financial support. As it being said it is very
important for the child to receive a support coming from the family or the parents
in any circumstances.
Theoretical Framework
This study is supported with a self-made theory that is based in a theory
of the Hierarchy of Needs by Abraham Maslow.
Maslow first presented his idea of hierarchy of needs in his 1943 paper
"A Theory of Human " and his consequent book Inspiration and Identity. This

from the family and parents to build the persons self-esteem which leads to the
fourth basic need, Esteem needs. Student confidence is an Important factor in
education, because if a student losses self-esteem the may lose motivation in
learning or even in pursuing their career. Lastly is Self-actualization, it is the
fulfillment of talent and potential. Self-actualized represent growth and
development to fulfill the highest dream of person. Just like a student, they need
to grow and develop to achieve their career goal.
It is really important to a student to have those five basic needs in their
life as they study and pursue their career in life. In those basic needs they will
be motivated to keep pursuing their dream career.

2. The study will do its research in the Batangas and Laguna area.
3. The study will seek its respondents in Colleges and Universities.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research Design
This study is designed as a qualitative study, aiming to know the
experiences of mechanical engineers studying without the support coming from
their parents. Cresswell (1994) defines qualitative research such as an analysis
of understanding a social or human problem, based on building a complex,
comprehensive picture, formed with words, reporting specific data, and
conducted in legitimate surroundings.
Among the types of qualitative research, there is a type of research that
needed to consider, in this study the type of qualitative research that being used
is a phenomenological study. A phenomenological study is type of research
which is used to describe how human beings experience a certain phenomenon
it is also defined. According to Cresswell (2003) the fundamental goal of the
approach is to arrive at a description of the nature of the particular
phenomenon.it is an attempt to set aside favoritism and preconceived suspicion
about human experiences, feelings, and responses to a particular situation.
Population and Sampling
The researchers conducted the/ data to respondents who are taking up
Mechanical Engineering that living around the common cities in Laguna and
Batangas.

In this case the population for the study is all students taking up 30
Mechanical Engineer who have an experience studying without the support
coming from their parents, but some of them maybe on the edge of working
and may not be accessible for the research study. Therefore, accessible
population for this study will be students who taking up Mechanical Engineers
who meet the designated criteria and who are also available for the research
study. In this study the researchers need at least 5 up to 25 respondents that
will be participating in this study.
In this study the sampling method that is used is a Snowball Sampling.
According to businessjargons, Snowball Sampling is a non-random sampling
technique wherein the respondent will refer another possible candidate as a
respondent of the study that has the same experiences that the study being
state.
Participants of the Study
In this type of study, the researchers include five participants who is
either a males or female, and the age limit is up to 20 to 30 years old who is
taking up Mechanical Engineering that have experienced studying with parents
not supporting it. Participants are randomly chosen from places in Laguna and
Batangas.

The instrument that being used is a researcher-made interview
questionnaire to gather the needed data. The draft of the questionnaire was
drawn out based on the things that needed to know on the experiences of the
respondents. The parts of the interviewer questionnaire are having a question
that will identify the data needed to know in a particular situation that the
participants going through. The researchers used an open-ended question that
requires more though and more that a simple one-word answer. There are
exactly ten interview questions, three for each research question except the
second research question that includes four interview questions.
Validation of the Instrument
The practical research adviser proof-read and validated the research
instruments and specifically the research questions and interview questions.
After validating the interview questions, the research adviser gave permission
to proceed in gathering the needed data on the participants.
Data Gathering Procedure
To gather the data there are procedures that needed to considered by
the researchers. First is to create a letter of approval to be signed by the
principal and send it to every participant that will participate to the study. By
interviewing the participants, the researchers needed permission by the school
to have the participants knows that the information the researchers gathered

FOR RESEARCH QUESTION NO. 1: How did the participants pursue
Mechanical Engineering even if their parents don’t support them?
Interview Question no. 1: Why did you take up Mechanical Engineering?
A. Influenced by the Others – 1 participant
“I took mechanical engineering because this triggered me that almost boys are
only getting this and because of friends influence.”
The researchers can deduce that in choosing a course for themselves
can be influenced by the others just like their friends. According to Urberg et al.
(2003), there are two stages of influence. The first one is a person is being
encourage or acquitted to do such things they like such as choosing a career
for them. And the second stage is conforming to the situation.
B. Personal Interest/Passion – 4 participants
“When I was a kid (at the age around 10?) dream ko na talaga aging
mechanical engineer. Kase lagi akong nag babasa ng mga books ng tito and
tita ko when they are still studying. And I was like “wtf?!! These stuffs r
amazing!!” gusto ko yung idea nang machines and all kaya ayon up until now
nagpursue ako sa Mech. Eng. kase I really want it.”

and everything related to them plus being a mechanical engineer sounds cool.”
“To pursue my dreams and also to make money so that I could help my
parents.”
“Gusto ko kasi siya. Actually, it is my 2nd choice my 1st choice is taking up law
pero due to financial problems ayon.”
The researchers can deduce that in making a career or choosing a
course for oneself is need to be a passion or personal interest. According to
Ginzberdg et al. (2003), that choosing a career is also influenced by young
person’s conceptualization of their ability, preferences and personal interests.
Interview Question no. 2: Why were your parents don’t support it?
A. Distance between places – 1 participant
“Because I will be far away with them. Cause I need to take a boarding house.”
The researchers can deduce that distance between the school and to a
home of a students can have a big effect in studying but due to determination
to learn a person is willing to walk in that distance. Disney (2005), a child’s
perception in studying can affect by distant schools. A person can lose interest
in studying but being encourage by the teachers a student encouraged to
pursue studying.

“My parents want me to do bussiness kase mas mapapakinabangan ko daw
yun since may small business kame. Pinaliwanag ko sa kanila why I want to
pursue M.E. but yeah ang gusto nila talaga mag business ako para daw may
pagpatuloy nang family bussiness namin.”
“Because they thought that it may be too hard for me since they saw me as a
happy-go-lucky type of student.”
The researchers can deduce that parents have a big role in a childs
education. Either supporting it or against to it. According to Kohn (1963), there
are types of parent-child relationship when it comes to education. One reason
a parent againts to their childs decisions is for them to have a higher or greater
education.
C. Financial Problem – 2 participants
“Because they don’t have enough money.”
“Dad ko lang ang may ayaw sabi niya kasi sakin noong 4th year highschool
ako hindi na daw niya ako kayang pagaralin ng college kaya ako daw ang
humanap ng paraan kung gusto ko magcollege pero kung hindi daw mag
tricycle driver nadaw ako. Ang nanay ko naman walang trabaho that time.”
The researchers can deduce that a hindrance to a good career is lack
or money. Grasgreen (2012), many students still suffering expenses of

academic pursuit. In the National Survey of Student Engagement, it shows that 36

finances were a big hindrance in student’s academic activity.
Interview Question no. 3: What difficulties you encountered while pursuing
your course even if your parents don’t support it?
A. Financial Problem – 2 participants
“Lack of money for paying my other needs because of the part that i need to
pay my rental fee.”
“It is very difficult because we lack of money.”
The researchers can deduce that most of the participants having
difficulties in terms of money. Pather (2015), indicates that most of the student
can’t relay on their parents to provide their needs in academic there for some
of them are having financial stress.
B. Anxiety – 1 participant
“Personally, nagkaroon ako nang anxiety kasi ever since noong middle school
lagi akong may honors kase grade conscious ako and my parents also, and
then noong nag college nako yun nga sinuway ko sila kase I really want to be
an M.E. because it was really my dream. Doon na pumasok si anxiety kase sa
mindset ko di enough lahat ng ginawa ko nung mid. school para gumawa ako
ng decision on my own. Kase sinusunod ko naman sila dati then nung mag

dedesisyon na ko para sa sarili ko they don’t listen to me. Kaya it is very difficult 37
for me.”
The researchers can deduce that having anxiety in studying can have a
big effect on your career path that it can lead to mental health issues. Gollust
et al. (2010), students reporting lack of parental support also a high risk for
mental health problems, conducted a survey that shows that need to address
mental health in young adults.
C. Dealing with the parents – 1 participant
“The most difficult part is convincing them that I really like the course and I am
ready to work hard to finish the course.”
The researchers can deduce that convincing the parents to support what
path the participants being choose can really be a hard time. Biliran (2018), in
convincing your parents to let you pursue your passion the person needed to
know what they really want and why they choose that passion. Understand why

even if the parents don’t support it, a person will do everything for it. According
to Carter (2017), as a student that is not supported by the parents can lead to
the student that need to work for their own in order to pay the tuition or other
expenses while studying.
FOR RESEARCH QUESTION NO. 2: What did the parents do in order to
discourage the participants in taking up Mechanical Engineer?
Interview Question no. 4: Did your parents limit you to do things that is related
to your course? If yes how did they limit you? If no why?
A. Yes – 1 participant
“Yes, nililimit ako nang parents ko parents ko example nalang is yung mga time
na may meet up kame para pagusapan yung mga gagawin namin lalo na pag
dating sa thesis bigla bigla akong pinag babantay nang coffee shop kase may
urgent meeting daw kahit wala naman. Kaya in the end through video call kame
nag memeeting”
The researchers can deduce that limiting the students in doing the things
related to their career might discourage them in pursuing their career.
According to Engstrom (2010) with limitation students can’t do the things they
need to do.

“Hindi naman nila ako nililimitahan kase wala ngang pake sakin dad ko kaya
okay lang kame. Kaya nagagawa ko lahat nang gusto ko kapag related sa
course ko.”

“No. they didn’t limit me.”
“My parents didn’t limit me to do things related to my course because I think
they figured out that they cannot change my mind about the course. They saw
my commitment and determination towards the course so they just let me do
the things related to mechanical engineering.”
The researchers can deduce that parents supporting their child in
everything they do can help them in accomplishing their studies. According to
Yazedjian (2007) parents can help them in accomplishing their studies by also
helping them in their thing that relates to their education.
Interview Question no. 5: Even if your parents don’t support the said course,
did they still support you financially? If not, what did you do to support yourself?
A. Supported – 4 participants
“Yes, even though we experienced lack of money they still support me
financially for my study.”

“Yes, my parents still support me pero sa ibang bagay lalo na pag projects na 40
sobrang hirap hindi kase sinasabi nila ginusto ko daw yon kaya dapat
gumagawa ako ng paraan para matustusan ko sarili ko.”
“Thankfully, they still supported all the financial requirements of my course.”
“My parents support me in that course even if they have not enough money. I
am taking a lot of scholarship exams.”
The researchers can deduce that even if the parents don’t support their
child due to some reason, they can still support their child financially. Dennis
(2003), the role of parents in a child’s education is to ensure the needs of the
child and provide it.
B. Not Supported – 1 participant
“Sa Dad ko hindi talaga ako supportado maaga siya nagretire. Mother ko
naman wala nga siyang trabaho so sa tita ko ako humihingi ng tulong pag
walang wala na talaga. Nagtricycle driver at delivery boy ako para
masustentuhan ang pagaaral ko.”
The researchers can deduce that being not supported in a career choice
also leads to not being supported to any financial needs that involves the
situation. Huff (2017), a student is willing to accept or undergo a work to support
themselves even if the work is not suited to their interest. It can support you
temporarily therefore it can provide somethings that is really needed.

“None, they accept it fast.”

The researchers can deduce that having an unsupportive parent in a
career choice that the respondents pursue can have an effect in their
relationship. According to Keller (2004), a parent is a big influence to a child’s
career choice therefore, it is also indicated that a parent must support the
career choice of the child. It can help in building a good relationship in their
family.
B. Yes – 3 participants
“Masaabi kong oo kase simula nung sinuway ko sila naging aloof na sila sakin
pero I know na they still love me paden kase ngayon medyo nag kakaayos na
kame kase they’re seeing na okay naman yung course na kinuha ko.”
“At first, yes but after a year and a half everything went back to normal.”
“Nung una medyo masakit of what my dad said pero as time passes by okay
na sa akin and stable naman ang relationship namin ng family ko.”
The researchers can deduce that having an unsupportive parent and
obeying the things they want for the respondents can have an effect in their

relationship. According Crosnoe et al. (2004), lack support to a career choice 42

a child choose can have a gap between the relationship of the parent and the
child.
Interview Question no. 7: In general, how did you cope up your struggles in
studying Mechanical Engineering without parental support?
A. Receiving help from the others – 1 participant
“My aunties and my other family member were helping me”
The researchers can deduce that in order to pursue a career without
support from the parents can receive help from others like relatives. According
to Salford University they are having a campaign for estranged student.
Therefore, they can study even if they don’t have parents or family to support
them. Which the researchers conclude that even if there are no parents who
can support a child in studying there is so many ways to gather help.
B. Motivating/Helping themselves – 4 participants
“Tinatry ko ng tinatry na ipaintindi sa parents ko kung bakit kailangan din nila
gustuhin yung bagay na gusto ko pero madalas I read books about the course
and I do blog doon ko nilalabas mga hinanakit ko.”
“Just studied hard, got high marks from all of my subjects and proved to them
that this is my passion and I can really finish the course.”

The researchers can deduce that motivating oneself can really help the
participants in coping up the struggles they are facing. Deci et al. (1991), in
motivating oneself there must be things that needed to apply. It also indicates
that Self-determination theory can promote student interest in learning, and
valuing education. Therefore, motivating oneself is important specially in
situation like this.
FOR RESEARCH QUESTION NO. 3: What motivated the participants to
pursue the said course?
Interview Question no. 8: Was there a time you want to give up Mechanical
Engineering? Why or why not?
A. No – 5 participants
“No, because I’m enjoying in my course and all that in my head is that i need
to finish my study to help my family. So I will not give up.”
“No because I want to prove myself to my parents na kaya kong tuparin yung
dream ko na gusto ko. Na hindi lang basta to dream na hanggang pangarap
nalang kagaya noong bata pako.”

here and there but I believe in my dream and I am confident that God is always
by my side.”

“Hindi, hirap na talaga ako mag working student konti nalang bat ko pa ba
isusuko ito? Hindi naman ako magpapakahirap nang ganto at hindi ko rin
susuwayin magulang ko kung susuko nalang ako basta basta.”
The researchers can deduce that in pursuing a person’s desired career
they must not give up and continue in pursuing it. According to Sasson (2000),
if a person really wants to achieve something it I never too late to achieve it
and if a person gives up on their dream, they might not be happy and star
complaining about their life and environment.
Interview Question no. 9: What was your greatest motivation in pursuing this
career?
A. Family – 5 participants
“My family, I want to change the life we have right now.”
“Pamilya ko padin kait ganto nangyari samin. Kase I want to help them kahit
hindi na sa bussines namin and I want to be a well-known M.E. I want to have
a name in this field.”

The researchers can deduce that all of the participants were motivated
by their family even if their parents don’t support them. Menges (2016) people
tend to find that family motivation enhances the capability of a person to look
up to their dreams.
Interview Question no. 10: Now, do you have any regrets in taking up
Mechanical Engineering? Why or why not?
A. None – 5 participants
“None, because it can really help me and my family in the future”
“I don’t have any regrets kase I really want this career so why regretting in
pursuing it?”
“None, because I am really enjoying this course/career.”
“Of course not. This is my dream.”

yung grades ko. Dahil nga nagttrabaho ako habang nag-aaral hindi ako
masyadong nakapagfocus sa pagaaral kulang palagi yung oras sa akin noon
kasi nga nagworking student ako.”
The researchers can deduce that in pursuing the desired career of a
person there is no regret in taking it up even if the parents don’t support it.
According to Landis (2005) “There is no better time than now to pursue your
passion”. she also indicates that in pursuing a passion or dream it can make.
CHAPTER 4
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND
RECOMMENDATIONS
Summary of Findings
The salient findings of the study are as follows:
1. The participants that happened to taking up Mechanical Engineering
were influence by their friends and also that is their personal choice and
passion in their life.
2. The participants were not supported by their parents due to distance
between the school and their home. Also, their parents don’t want them to
pursue the course because one of the parents of the respondents what them
to pursue other course and the other parents don’t believe on what their child

can do. Lastly having problem with the finances that needed to pay in studying 47
or pursuing the said course.
3. The difficulties that the participants encountered were lack of money
to pursue the said course, second is having anxiety that one of the respondents
is struggling in proving themselves to their parents, third is how to deal their
parents to let them pursue their career. And lastly is working while studying, it
is one of the difficulties they encountered and in the situation like that the
respondents might struggle in their academics. Not having enough time to
study might affects their academics.
4. One from the participants were not limited by their parents because
their parents understand that they need to do such things that is related to their
course. And most of the participants were being limited to do those things that
is related course by their parents but even if they were limited to do the things
that is related to their course they are still determined to pursue it.
5. Most of the participants received a financial support from their parents
even if their parents were against it. And one of the respondents was not
supported due to their parent retirement and don’t have money to support the
respondents
6. Disobeying a parent on what career a child is choosing can have an
affect between them. Most of the participants that disobeyed their parents have

effects on their relationship temporarily. Two of the respondents don’t affect 48

their relationship between their parents and their parents.
7. The participants cope up their struggles in parents doesn’t support
them by receiving help from relatives in terms of financial and motivating or
helping themselves by doing things that can help them being motivated.
8. All of the participants didn’t give up on their dreams because they
really want to pursue it and to prove themselves to their parents.
9. The participants greatest motivation was their family. Even if they
have an unsupportive parent, they still considered their family as their greatest
motivation.
10. All of the participants didn’t regret pursuing Mechanical Engineering
because they know that their choice can help them in the future and also this
career is their dream therefore, they didn’t regret taking it.
Conclusions
1. The researchers can conclude that the participants pursued
Mechanical Engineering with the help of influence by their friends and their
personal interest in pursuing it. Also, they relay themselves in their difficulties
while pursuing the said course; they used their difficulties as one of their
motivation in pursuing the said course

2. The researchers can conclude that the parents of the participants 49

discouraged them by not supporting the needs of the participants, also as the
participants disobeyed their parents had an effect on their relationship as family
but the participants cope up on their struggles by receiving help from their
relatives and by doing things that can motivate them to continue in pursuing the
said course.
3. The researchers can conclude that the participants were motivated to
pursue the said course even if the parents don’t support them by not giving up
on their dreams even if too many hindrances cross to their lives and one of the
greatest motivations of them was their family, they want to pursue this career
to help them in the future also to fulfill their dream. Lastly even if they disobey
their parents, they didn’t regret pursuing their career because they are holding
a great reason to still pursue their dreams.
Recommendations
After drawing the conclusions, the researchers enumerate here the
recommendations or suggestions offered by the study:
1. Students. The researchers recommend that students must do things
that can help them pursue their dream even if the means of it is to work for
themselves and not lose hope in their dream career even if many hindrances
cross their life as a student.

2. Parents. The researchers recommend that parents must support their 50

children in their career choice. Help them by supporting them financially,
physically and emotionally. Give them a good relationship between them and
the family therefore, they are confident in pursuing their course
3. Teachers. The researchers recommend that teachers must help their
student in any terms they can therefore they can confidently show of
themselves in class. Let them know that there are persons they can rely on.
4. Future researchers. The researchers recommend that do some
more research about the study therefore many can be motivated and continue
on pursuing their dream
5. This research paper must be published in the future so that future
researchers can benefit
