What are the classifications of Sachs – The classifications of Sachs- Hornbostel

Hornbostel System? System are idiophone, aerophone,
membranophone and chordophone.

What is idiophone? Idiophone is an instrument the whole of which

Who can give me an example? An example of idiophone is bell.

How about aerophone? What is it? And give

me an example. Aerophone is a wind instrument. For example,
flute and harmonica.

Discussion
The Philippines is rich in folk traditions,
specifically of indigenous music and folk songs.
Indigenous music covers instrumental forms.
These instruments include those of what are
made of bamboo, metal and wood, and are
used in various rituals and secular activities of
the people.

I am going to show you some pictures. Try to

analyze and classify it to it’s correspond group
of classification.

This is Libbit. To what classification should it

belongs to?
Libbit is a membranophone.

Very good. This is an instrument of Ifugao.

Next is Saggeypo.
 Ma’am, Saggeypo is a wind instrument or
aerophone.

Very good. This belongs to Kalinga Ethnic

group.

Bungkaka is an idiophone.

This Afiw from Bontoc Ethnic group. That Afiw from Bontoc Ethnic Group is
aerophone.

What is Gangsa?
Gangsa is a gong.

You are right!

 The gangsa is a flat gong without bass, and
is played in celebration connected with the
conclusion of peace pacts, burial rites, or
head hunting.

It is played in two different ways:

1. Gangsa toppaya is played with palms of
the hand followed by a strong slap and
slide from the center to the outer edge.

2. Gangsa pattung is struck with sticks.

Other names of it are:
- Gangsa in Kalinga
- Gangha in Ifugao
- Kalsa and Pinsak in Ibaloi

What is zither?
Zither is a stringed instrument.

The zither is an instrument with parallel

strings that run along the entire length of
the body.
Zithers in the Philippines are of the tube, half-
tube and board variety.
Other names of it are:
- Kolitong in Bontoc
- Kulibit in Kalinga

What is lip valley flute?

Lip- valley flute is a wind instrument.

Very Good.

The lip-valley flute is a blowing edge

mouthpiece. The upper and lower lips of a
pipe are the flat surfaces above and below
the mouth.
Other names of it are:
- Paldon in Kalinga
- Taladi in Ibaloi
What is Saggeypo? Saggeypo is a wind instrument.

Saggeypo is consist of six pipes in a row,
unattached to each other, played separately
 by six preferences each one blowing on one
or two pipes.
It is named Saggeypo in Kalinga.

What is Kallaleng?

Kallaleng is a kind of flute with three finger

holes.

The Kallaleng is a long bamboo tube, closed
at one end by the node in which blowing
hole is burnt. This flute has three finger
holes.
The blowing hole is place under an angle
against the nose and the player gently blows
in the hole.
Other names of it are:
- Kaleleng in Bontoc
- Ungiyung in Ifugao
- Tungali in Kalinga

What is Jew,s harp?

Jew’s harp is a stringed instrument.

The jew’s harp is an instrument made of

bamboo or metal, with a thin or flexible
tongue made to vibrate by plucking the tip
of the instrument or by pulling a string
attached to its tapered end.
It is usually played solo.
Other names of it are:
- Afiw in Bontoc
- Koding in Ibaloi
- Giwong in Kalinga

What is conical drum?

Conical drum is a membranophone.

The conical drum has a wider upper end
which is covered with skin; its bottom is
open and narrow.
Other names of it are:
- Libbit in Ifugao
- Kimbal and culibao in Ibaloi
What is stamping tubes?
Stamping tubes is a bamboo instrument.

The stamping tubes is a musical instrument

made from one segment of bamboo with
the bottom end closed by a node, and the
tap end open. The instruments come in sets
of 2-6 tubes, usually made from the same
bamboo poles.
Other names of it are:
- Tongatong in Kalinga
- Tungtung in Isneg

It is a bamboo instrument.

The bamboo buzzer is a musical instrument

made from a variety of bamboo that has a
long, slender internode.
The sound is produced by striking the split
ends against the palm of the hand.
