Kotak Aksara?
Kotak Aksara is a Jakarta-based charity
project founded by Global Sevilla Puri Indah
secondary students.

This non-profit charity project is

designed to spread the love for reading
throughout our community and,
eventually, increase the national literacy
rate.

Our mission is to slow or even halt the

decline of reading for pleasure, and
spread the influence and show the
coming generations that having every
reading material shown to or made
mandatory for us is not always the best
option, and make people realize that
MINAT books can be fun after all.

BACA
Procedure
Take a book, leave a book.
We will collect old books that people are not interested in reading or
re-reading anymore

These books will be collected in boxes and recycled storage and will
be organized based on genre

People are welcome to take a book provided that they put another
one or more in place

Books will be recorded in a database and donated to schools in slum

areas such as Muara Angke in North Jakarta and disaster-stricken
areas like Lombok, Palu and Donggala

This project will be expanded to other schools and communities like

churches and offices so that we will be able to
collect more books for donation as well as
let others have the opportunity to read more
Indonesia
& Literacy
According to a research conducted by
Indonesia’s Perpustakaan Nasional in
2017 and a recent Jakarta Post article,

On average, Indonesians
only read 3-4 times every
week with an average
duration of 30-59 minutes
per day
Meanwhile, the average
amount of books
completely read by
Indonesians every year is
only 5-9
In terms of interest in
reading, Indonesia ranked
60 out of 61 countries

Despite a reported 95% adult literacy rate, most available evidence

suggests that the ability of the average Indonesian adult to understand
and make use of written information is shockingly low.
The HEAD Foundation, July 5th, 2017.
It is our responsibility as Indonesians to make a change.
