Definition of ESP?

English for Specific Purposes, or ESP, is the methodology of teaching English for
professionals in various fields, focusing on types of expressions, vocabulary,
standard and formal structures that will be used most of all in a specific field, etc.
Or ESP is an approach to language teaching in which all desicions as to content and
method are based on the learners reasons for learning (Hutchinson et al.1987:19).
The rule of ESP?
Pertama, ESP harus dirancang untuk memenuhi kebutuhan pembelajar.
Kedua, ESP merealisasikan metodologi dan aktivitas sesuai dengan bidang ilmu
yang ditargetkan atau dipelajari dan diajarkan.
Ketiga, sebagai suatu pendekatan baru, fokus ESP adalah penggunaan kebahasaan
yang tipikal (grammar, lexis, register), keterampilan, wacana, genre yang sesuai
dengan aktivitas.
The characteristic of ESP?
 It is all based on the learner’s requirement. Inspiration related to job.
 It has particular use of vocabulary.
 It is taught with the help of presentation and negotiation.
 It uses different tactics to accomplish its target.
 It is all about learner need goal-oriented.
 It is often used for e-commerce or business communication purposes.

What is the purposes we must learn ESP?

Firstly, there is learning speed. ESP results in faster acquisition of required linguistic
items. This is because it follows the pattern of native speaker acquisition of language
for specific purposes, in which speakers learn what they need, when they need it, in
authentic, content-based contexts. ESP not only follows this pattern, but improves
upon it by providing an opportunity to learn in an accelerated, intensive context.

Secondly, there is learning efficiency. On an ESP course trainees make the maximal
use of their learning resources, all of which are brought to bear on acquiring specific,
pre-identified linguistic items and skills. Obviously, the needs analysis is of vital
importance here, since it enables trainers to determine the specific requirements of
trainees.

Thirdly, there is learning effectiveness. On completion of an ESP course, trainees are

ready to use language appropriately and correctly in job related tasks, tasks which
have been identified prior to the course by means of a needs analysis. So, upon
completion of the course, English is usable immediately in the employment context. In
addition, trainees are prepared for further job-related training in English, such as an
MBA. Such preparation will result in greater academic performance since no time is
wasted in acquiring necessary language.
The difference between ESP and General english?
English for Specific Purpose is language in context. On the other hand, General
English is language in seclusion. Both are important for students to attain various
skills to move confidently in the modern world. General English purpose is to cover
all the skills whereas; ESP put stress on the needs of learner. People should be
aware of ESP and General English difference. In an ESP course, language is used
as a service rather than a Subject.
