COURSE DESCRIPTION:

A basic course on the law of persons and the family which first views the effect and
application of laws and the law on human relations, and then proceeds to examine the legal
norms affecting civil personality, marriage, property relations between husband and wife, legal
separation, the matrimonial regimes of absolute community, conjugal partnership of gains, and
complete separation of property, family, paternity and filiation, adoption, guardianship, support,
parental authority, surnames, absence and emancipation, including the rules of procedure relative
to the foregoing.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

1: KNOWLEDGE – Know and understand the fundamental civil rights of persons as well as the
various laws governing the family. Articulate the essence of marriages, the rights and
responsibilities of parents to each other and to their children.

2: ETHICS, PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY, - Imbibe the values needed to create a basic

social institution and preserve the foundation of the community

3: THINKING SKILLS - Identify and articulate legal issues; apply legal reasoning and research
to generate appropriate responses to legal issues; engage in critical analysis and make a
reasoned choice amongst alternatives; and think creatively in approaching legal issues
and generating appropriate responses.

4: RESEARCH SKILLS – Develop the skill to research on jurisprudence and laws that are
applicable to subject matter and apply the same to case problem given for analysis and discussion.

5: COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION - Effectively relate the topics, laws and

jurisprudence learned to daily tasks and day to day

6: SELF-MANAGEMENT

COURSE LEVEL LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLLO)

At the end of the course, the student is expected to:

CLLO 1: Explain, analyze and apply the legal rules and concepts governing and regulating
family relationships;

CLLO 2: Critically analyze and apply key cases and statutes to a given problem scenario;

CLLO 3: Demonstrate an ability to advise family members of their rights in a given

situation;

CLLO 4: React favorably and with integrity to situations that would require knowledge of
the law on Persons and Family Relations;

CLLO 5: Cultivate within himself/herself an awareness of his/her responsibility in

upholding the state policy on marriage and family;

CLLO 6 : Integrate the values of fairness, equity, honesty and good faith in all dealings as
well as in interpreting the provisions of law; and

CLLO 7: Develop confidence and competence in answering questions on the law on persons
and family relations in preparation for the bar examinations.

POLICY ON CLASS RECORDINGS AND COURSE MATERIALS

The course materials are all academic property of the course professor. A student may not record,
copy or take photos of any part of the class by any means, and in exceptional cases that the student
receives written faculty authorization to record a class, the student may not copy or download such
recording to a computer or any device for distribution. All course materials are for the student’s personal
education and study. Unauthorized use of the course materials, downloading, uploading or reproduction
shall be treated as violation of the University policy on honesty as well as infringement of copyright laws.

METHODOLOGY

Methods used in teaching the course shall include lecture discussion, cases and class
recitation.
