One step

Korweinguboora resident Julie Matthews-Eva has never been a

stranger to adventure – from snow-skiing, scuba diving, to flying
a plane.
The thing is, she’s done it all with an artificial leg.
Now, Ms Matthews-Eva is breaking new ground as the first person
in the world to compete at a national level in Ballroom dancing with
a bionic leg.
After an appearance last month on the Channel Nine reality TV
show ‘This Time Next Year’, Ms Matthews-Eva pledged to dance
again.
A year and a half later, taking up her first dancing lesson in April
2018, Ms Matthews-Eva has gone on to compete nationally in
Ballroom dancing; with the waltz, foxtrot, tango and rumba her
chosen styles.
Ms Matthews-Eva was born in New Zealand and moved to a 20-
acre property in Korweinguboora with her husband in 2004.
She lost her left leg on her 16th birthday in 1980, following a
diagnosis of bone cancer.
This led to a rare amputation known as hip disarticulation, which
makes up less than one percent of the population of amputees.
Ms Matthews-Eva is following – quite literally – in the footsteps of
her parents, who were both ballroom dancers.
“That was their first date, and then they always ballroom danced;
my sisters ballroom danced, but I never really got the opportunity…
although I danced around the living room…I always wanted to, and
never could, and never thought I could, and now I can.”
Ms Matthews-Eva’s dream led to ground-breaking work to allow
her to dance.
“It takes a long time to get prosthetics right, and this is the first,
therefore the limb centre I’m working with, its new for them, they’ve
never done it before either,” she said.
In the 39-years since her amputation, Ms Matthews-Eva says there
has been a noticeable shift in the societal acceptance of people living
with a visible disability.
“In 1980, you hid your disability. You wore a cosmetic cover, and
you really didn’t tell people you had an artificial leg, you just wore
trousers, or you wore an artificial stocking,” she said.
“Whereas now, you have it on full display and you go ‘look at me’
– and that’s really come about because of the heroes from the war,
and from athletes, who now show their disability.”

“I’ve now got commando

robot woman, I get those
sorts of comments, and kids
now go ‘Wow, look at that,
that’s really cool’”, she said.
“So, I have actually chosen
to not wear it and say ‘Okay,
well I’ll just own it.’”
Although she’s already
become the ‘first’ at
something, Ms Matthews-
Eva’s thirst for adventure
continues, with plans to ride
a three-wheeled motorcycle
around Australia and write
a book.
“I want to tour Australia…
get my driver’s licence…and
I’ll probably travel around
with the dog on the back,
so that’s maybe the next
challenge,” she said.
As for what she would
tell her younger self, Ms
Matthews-Eva joked to
“keep the weight off!”, as
getting her new leg meant
having to lose 20-kilograms.
“I’ve always had the mantra
of just one day at a time, I’ve
woken up, I’m breathing, it’s
a good day,” she said.

A roundabout at McCormacks Rd in
Maddingley was officially opened last
month, creating another component of the
Western Link Road.
The roundabout is set to help ease
traffic congestion and cater for growth
in the Maddingley area, following the
establishment of the Stonehill housing estate.
Mayor Paul Tatchell and Councillors John
Keogh and Tonia Dudzik were joined by
developers, contractors and community
members on Thursday, 12 September to
officially open the roundabout.

Cr Tatchell said that “we were delighted
to officially open this $1.9 million project,
funded by Council and developers”.
“The roundabout has created a safe crossing
for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. It will
help ease traffic congestion and cater for
growth in the Maddingley area. And the
landscaping looks fantastic,” he said.
Construction officially began in April this
year, with the roundabout formalising
the intersection of four individual roads,
including McCormacks Road, Griffith Street,
O’Leary’s Way and Bacchus Marsh–Balliang
Road.

A new initiative aimed at increasing the
confidence, skills and online safety of older
Australians is making its way to Moorabool.
‘Be Connected’ is an Australian Government
program that aims to help with internet
usage through a family and community-
centred approach.
It will help older Australians realise the value
of being connected online, and will provide
access to appropriate training and support
in a safe and familiar environment, through
face-to-face and personal communication.
Moorabool Shire Council Community
Volunteer Ian Blackburn is stationed at the
Lerderderg Library every Wednesday from
9am-11am, as well as sessions in Gordon,
Ballan, and Bungaree, and assists older
people with IT requests.
Mr Blackburn will be at Council’s Seniors
Expo on Thursday, 10 October at the Bacchus
Marsh Public Hall, located at 207 Main Street
between 10am to 1pm.
Council is also looking for additional
volunteers to assist Ian in his quest to assist
older people to get online.

Reading challenge completed
Students across the region have enjoyed reading hundreds
of books over the past few months as part of the Premiers’
Reading Challenge.
Member for Macedon Mary-Anne Thomas visited Coimadai
Primary School in the Moorabool Shire, where every student
took part in this year’s Challenge.
They were among the 113,000 students and children who
completed the Challenge from 956 local schools, 1,367 early
childhood services and homes across the state.
Together, they have read more than 4.3 million books. To
complete the Challenge, students in Year’s 3 to 10 had to read
at least 15 books in the six months from March to September.

For students in prep, grade one and grade two, the Challenge
was to read or experience 30 books.
Ms Thomas said it was fantastic to see so many avid readers
at Coimadai Primary.
“I hope their participation in this year’s challenge leads to a
lifelong love of reading.
“It’s no secret that I love to read and I’m glad that I could
donate books to schools around my electorate to share the
magic of reading with students,” she said.
Since the Challenge began in 2005, more than 3 million
students in Victoria have read over 50 million books,
which if you stacked the book’s they would stretch past the
international space station.

‘Stupid mistake’

A truck driver appeared in the Bacchus Marsh Magistrate’s
court on Friday 20 September before Magistrate Letizia
Torres, with a plea of guilty to multiple driving related
charges.
It was alleged by the prosecution that Mecal Hansen was
travelling east along Bacchus Marsh road on March 8 this
year when intercepted by police.
Prosecutor Senior Sergeant McCormack told the court police
were travelling in the opposite direction to the accused when
they noticed he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.
Prosecutor McCormack said Hansen was wearing a “yellow
high vis-shirt” so it was obvious to police that there was no
seatbelt across his front.
Hansen was intercepted by police a short time later and was
asked to provide a sample for a preliminary oral fluid test,
which showed a positive reading for illicit drugs.
“I made a stupid mistake,” Hansen said.
“I didn’t think I was working that week, so I smoked
cannabis [before I drove].”
Magistrate Torres cancelled Hansen’s licence for a period of
three months, he was convicted and fined a sum of $400.

A New South Wales father of two appeared
in the Bacchus Marsh Magistrate’s court to
plead guilty to sending provocative images
of his now ex-partner without her consent.

relationship and birth of two children.
In court on Friday 6 September it was
alleged by the prosecution, Sergeant Michael
Patterson, that the victim had been moved
into a safe house away from the accused for

December of last year, the accused allegedly
sent the victim 50-70 messages a day,
harassing her via both phone and social
media.
During this period [November – December
2018], the victim was informed that the
accused had sent a naked image of her to the
victim’s new partner via message.
The prosecution told the court during
the summary the victim “didn’t give
permission” for the image to be distributed
and the image was sent to the accused
“during their relationship”.
“[The accused] wasn’t thinking about the
consequences of sending the photo to [the
victim’s] new partner,” the accused’s lawyer
told the court.
“[The offending] is at the lower end of the
scale. The image didn’t feature full nudity
and there was no sexual act,” the accused’s
lawyer said.
“I can’t have people behave like this,”
Magistrate Gregory Robinson said.
“To humiliate her in the way you have
sought to is despicable behaviour.”
“This type of conduct might lead you to a
term of imprisonment if you do it again,”

The accused was convicted and fined a sum
of $2000 with statutory costs of $84.40.

I am wanting to bring up a point of the
condition of our roads in Ballan. The road
leading up the hill over the river toward
Greendale, Blackwood street. The road once
again has had a bit of tar sprayed on it and a
heap of stones thrown on it to cover up the
hundreds of potholes; they have been doing
this for the past six years. Isn’t it about time
before there is a fatal on this section, to FIX
the whole section of this hill? Council, start
using some of our rates we pay to do the
jobs......

We have spoken with local councillors in
the Moorabool Shire who attribute blame
to the State’s Auditor General. We have
also spoken with our local state member’s
office. However, all our concerns seem to
fall on deaf ears. Both forms of government
maintain that they want to keep the rural
aspect in the shire however neither seem
willing to come up with a better and fairer
rating system for the farming community.
The peri-urban nature of this shire brings
many challenges to farming and we receive
little help with the influx of people, weeds,
lack of infrastructure and destruction of
existing infrastructure and rubbish that they
bring.
I believe that if the government do not find
a fairer rating-system we and many other
farmers in our district, will be rated out and
local production will cease.

German to coach Cobras Burton crowned ‘King’ of

the Cobras

Bacchus Marsh has appointed highly

respected football journeyman Tom
German to fill the vacant senior
coaching role ahead of the 2020 BFNL
season. The signature is a welcomed
change of luck on the recruiting front
for the Cobras after an indifferent and
otherwise disappointing 2019.
While German is essentially untried
off-field, you can expect the 29-year
old to be starring on it in his dual
role as playing coach. The former
Essendon listed player has spent time
with Williamstown and the Northern
Blues in the VFL, Oak Park in the
Essendon District Football League and
more recently with Mansfield in the
Goulburn Valley Football League. But
the stat that would raise an eyebrow
or two and have the Cobras faithful
rubbing their hands is that German
has won or finished runners up in the
club best and fairest in seven of his
last 10 seasons as a player and led the
GVFL Medal Count after Round 7 this
year before missing five weeks with a
broken hand.
According to Cobras Football
Manager Adam Sutherland, they’re
very fortunate to have landed a
playing coach of German’s ilk.
“While the coaching side is a bit
of an unknown, the leadership,
preparedness and experience Tom
will bring to the group is very
exciting,” he said.
“We’re rapt.
“He’s been through all of the footy
systems and has performed well at
every level.
“Tom will most certainly fill the void
that has been in our midfield.
“He’s ‘top shelf’,” Sutherland said.
The acquisition of German to the
football club has been a work in
progress.
“I phoned Tom 12-months ago,
inquiring about his availability just as
a player,” Sutherland said.
The coup came to fruition when
German (a chartered accountant)
left his position at the family pub in
Mansfield to pursue employment
closer to home.
“If Bacchus Marsh had been an hour

and a half away, I wouldn’t have
taken the job given I work and live in
Melbourne and have a young family,”
German said.
“I pride myself on my effort inside the
contest and with my running ability.
“My message to the players, the non-
negotiables you say will be with our
intensity, tackling and improving our
skill set,” he said.
Sutherland likened German’s player
type to a former star and Best and
Fairest of the club.
“Scott Sherlock springs to mind of
players I would align with Tom,” he
said.
“At 178cm and 82kg, German looks a
ready-made fit to go around this week
if he had to.”
German was reluctant to elaborate on
any other potentials he had in line to
bring to the club.
“There’s a few I’m chatting to at the
moment but I’m not prepared to give
anything away at this stage,” he said
with a wry grin.
Things are looking up at Cobra land.

Burton has taken out his third
Best and Fairest ‘Gong’ in four
seasons at the BMFNC Presenta-
tion Night held at Tabcorp Park
on Friday September 28.
The 24-year old was recognized
for another stellar season, com-
plementing his (already) third
placing in the League’s 2019
Henderson Medal.
A packed room witnessed the
popular bigmans’ win ahead of
joint captain Jake Owen (second)
and season surprise packet de-
fender Tom Wardell (third).
Star forward Owen was also the
Club’s leading goalkicker with
35, while young gun Jack Parente
(Best first year player) and de-
fender Timmy Hughes (Coaches
Award) shared the rest of the
evening spoils. The Cobras will
be hoping to better their eighth
placing in 2019 and mount a re-
turn back to finals under newly
appointed Coach Tom German
(see interview).

Despite a four-game winning
streak from Rounds 4-8 (Bye
Round 6), the Cobras rarely
threatened to feature in Sep-
tember. The club spent just five
weeks between Rounds 5 and 9
in the top six (peak fourth after
Round 6). The offseason loss of
key players ahead of 2019 was
palpable as a finals bid would
prove a bridge too far. While
personnel played an undeniable
role in the Cobras finals absence
there were a few positives the
club could hang their hat on
moving forward.

2. Defensively they conceded
less points (32) in 2019, than in
2018, despite winning four less
games - League rank #6 Avg pts
AGST 68.9.
3. The advantage cross town
rival Darley had over them is of-
ficially over (run of six consecu-
tive losses).
The ‘finds’ - Tom Wardell’s ef-
fort in defence this year is a great
story, plucked from obscurity in
reserve grade to be one of nine
players to play every senior game
in 2019 - you can add a third place
finish in the Club’s Best and Fair-
est for confirmation. Youngster
Jack Parente will only get better
with more experience - looms an
enviable prospect.
The ‘haves’ - Two A-Graders to
build a team around this off sea-
son namely Daniel Burton and
Jake Owen. A new playing coach
in Tom German that will add
depth to a midfield reeling since
Scott Sherlock left; and I’m tip-
ping German won’t come empty
handed.
The ‘have-nots’ - An A-Grade
‘grunt’ leader (mid 20s) in the
midfield who sets the example
for a younger group to toe-the-
line; can also be looked upon as
a protector of sorts. Add him to
Burton, a fitter Harrison King
and Nick Stuhldrier - potential
stocks in the middle look on the
rise already.
The ‘needs’ for 2020 - The Co-
bras are probably four or five
players short (that need to be in
their top 12) at the moment to be
matching it with the 2019 Grand
Finalists. Ball use efficiency, de-
cision making and leg speed are
attributes I’m sure the Cobras
will acknowledge as their Achil-
les heel in 2019. Ideally the Club
would be wanting a running
half back and or key defender
who uses the ball well, a big
bodied mid who can cover the
ground (see ‘have nots’) to help
Nick Stuhldrier and maximise
the advantage of Burton in the
ruck. Two mids would be ideal,
King and N. Stuhldrier would
fit easily on a wing. And finally,
another avenue to goal. The Co-
bras booted 178 goals in 2019, 69
of them (38.8%) came from Owen
(35) and Aaron Willetts (34). Billy
Griffiths (14 goals / 13 games)
was the only other player from
the list of 38 used in 2019 to aver-
age more than a goal a game. To
put it into perspective, the Pre-
miers East Point had six (from
only 34 players used).

After waiting almost five weeks between their first and
second competition, last week saw the Juniors have two
competitions in five days.
Monday saw them performing in the beautiful Ulumbarra
Theatre in Bendigo for their Calisthenics Victoria State Titles
competition. Competition was close - the girls came away
with the following places: March - Honourable Mention,
Clubs - 2nd, Free Exercises - 3rd, Rods - 2nd, Aesthetics -
Highly Commended, Revue - 3rd.
Saturday they were a bit closer to home with their Westside
Competition held in Gladstone Park. This time their
performances were rewarded with places as follows: 2nd
- Aesthetics, 3rd - March and Clubs, Honourable Mention -
Free Exercises, Rods and Revue.
The start to the 2019/20 Track and Field Season has begun.
A Come and Try Day was held in conjunction with their
first competition meet. This was to allow trialling athletes
to obtain a better indication of how the Centre operated on
a weekly basis. Almost 150 registered athletes competed
on Saturday morning, several for the first time, plus 48 new Lachie Snaith top scored with 45 and had the best bowling

Nelson Banigo (Eagles) broke the first record for the season
running 28.50 seconds for the Under 11 200 metres. The
previous record had stood for 17 years.
Training will commence for all registered athletes this
Tuesday 4.45-5.30pm for Under 6-9 athletes concentrating on
education. Then training sessions for Under 10-16 athletes
from 5.15-6pm.
Next Saturday will be the new season’s Official Opening.
Life Members and Distinguished Service members are
invited to attend and will join the Committee for morning
tea. The new Captains will also be announced prior to
competition commencing.
Under 9-16 athletes interested in representing the Centre Jack McGregor clocked up Captain Michael Snaith
at this year’s Relay Championships must submit their Relay 34 runs and took 6 catches defending and scoring 27
